Report: Trump teases 2028 rivalry between Vance and Rubio
President Donald Trump told reporters last week he considers Vice President JD Vance the 'most likely' Republican to succeed him, but a new report indicates he's enjoying raising the prospect of a competition with Sen. Marco Rubio behind the scenes. 'Which one of you is going to be at the top of the ticket?' Trump asked Vance and Rubio earlier this year, according to the Wall Street Journal, citing a 'person with knowledge of the conversation.' 'I used to think it would be Vance-Rubio, but maybe it will be Rubio-Vance.' The Wall Street Journal report is the latest demonstration of Trump's zeal for stoking internecine warfare within his administration. Trump believes the 2028 Republican nominee should have to earn the job, sources told the newspaper. When asked by Fox News whether Vance was his 'heir apparent' to MAGA, Trump replied positively about his vice president before teeing up his secretary of state. 'I think Marco is also somebody that maybe would get together with JD in some form,' the president said, raising them as possible running mates. Still, Vance, Trump said, 'would be probably favorite at this point.' Could Trump's comments help cement a Vance-Rubio ticket four years ahead of the 2028 election? 'Let's stay focused on the work in front of us, but I'll say this much for now... JD Vance and Marco Rubio would be one of the most formidable presidential tickets ever assembled,' Turning Point founder and CEO Charlie Kirk commented . The Journal report also cited 'people close to Rubio' who said the Floridian, 54, would be willing to run for president with Vance, 41, as his running mate. A source close to the White House dismissed the president's reported comment as routine teasing between the two men. 'While the president loves to tease people and I wouldn't expect him to make a formal endorsement anytime soon, he was pretty clear last week in his public statements about who be believes will be the nominee in 2028,' a source close to the White House told the Daily Mail. 'He sees all the public polling and it's pretty clear to those around him that he's bullish on Vance's chances,' the source added. An Emerson College Poll published in July showed that Vance leads the 2028 field with 42 percent support of GOP voters followed by Ron DeSantis at nine percent and Rubio in third place with seven percent. It had a margin of error of 3.6 percentage points. In public, both Rubio and Vance appear to be friendly and supportive of each other's success in the administration, even as their supporters chat openly in Washington, DC about who is more qualified to succeed Trump. 'Marco is incredibly competent and reliable, and he's also one of my closest friends in the administration,' Vance told CNN in July. On Fox News, Rubio said that he looked forward to a Vance run for president one day. 'I think he's doing a great job as vice president. He's a close friend and I hope he intends to do it, but I know it's kind of early,' Rubio told Lara Trump, the president's daughter-in-law in a Fox News interview.

Trump suggests Vance is his likely heir apparent in 2028
US president Donald Trump suggested on Tuesday that vice president JD Vance is 'most likely' his heir apparent to serve as the Republican nominee in 2028, the furthest he has gone in backing Mr Vance as a future presidential candidate. 'Well, I think most likely,' Mr Trump told reporters when asked whether Mr Vance was the heir apparent to the movement he has inspired. 'In all fairness, he's the vice president.' Advertisement Mr Trump also proposed that Mr Vance and secretary of state Marco Rubio join forces for a future Republican ticket. While the 2028 race is still years away, Mr Trump holds considerable influence with the Republican base and any sign that he is backing a candidate carries significant implications. Mr Trump has declined in the past to offer any endorsement for a 2028 successor. He said in February that Mr Vance was 'very capable' but that it was too early to name him as the leading candidate. Mr Vance, a 40-year-old onetime Marine, has carved out a sizable role in the Trump administration, serving as a key diplomat and top surrogate selling Mr Trump's domestic policy at home and foreign policy abroad. Mr Rubio, a former Florida senator, has emerged as a significant figure in an administration that has spent considerable time tackling thorny foreign policy dilemmas. He is the first person since Henry Kissinger to serve as both secretary of state and national security adviser.

Trump: Vance ‘probably favored at this point' for 2028 nomination
President Trump said Tuesday it was too soon to settle on a successor to serve as the Republican nominee in 2028, but he acknowledged Vice President Vance is the 'most likely' heir apparent. 'I think most likely, in all fairness,' Trump said when asked if he would clear the field by backing Vance. 'So it's too early to talk about it, but certainly he's doing a great job, and he would be probably favored at this point,' Trump said of his vice president. Trump suggested Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who ran for president in 2016, could make a formidable ticket with Vance. The president also cited others in his Cabinet who could have a future leading the MAGA movement. Trump earlier Tuesday said he would 'probably not' seek a constitutionally prohibited third term. The president and some of his allies have repeatedly floated the idea of a third term. At times, those comments have been dismissed as a joke, though Trump has at other points appeared more serious about the idea. Some political strategists have suggested that Trump's talk of a third term also helps keep a lid on chatter about the 2028 presidential race, taking the spotlight away from the president's administration. North Carolina's 2026 Senate race wide open after Tillis bows out
Sen. Thom Tillis says he's not running again, a day after he railed against President Donald Trump's spending bill. Sen. Thom Tillis announces he is not running for reelection The most interesting 2026 race in the country just got more interesting. Tillis is not running. There are three Republicans who Channel 9 government reporter Joe Bruno is keeping an eye on in the race to replace him as the GOP nominee. First is Lara Trump. The president's daughter-in-law is a North Carolina native. Bruno talked to her about this exact scenario last year. When it comes to running for Senate in 2026 or even governor in 2028, she said she would never say never. One thing to keep in mind now is that she lives in Florida. However, she would only have to be a resident of North Carolina by the General Election Day in 2026. There is also some precedent. Hillary Clinton moved to New York just before she ran and won the Senate seat there. The next person to watch is Michael Whatley. He is the RNC chairman and former NCGOP chairman. He is from Gaston County and has deep ties and a strong rolodex thanks to his long tenure in the Republican Party. Finally, don't rule out 10th Congressional District Rep. Pat Harrigan. His district includes Lincoln, Catawba and Iredell counties. He is seen as a rising star in the Republican Party. He's young, has a military background and won a very tough primary last year. A person close to Harrigan confirmed to Bruno the congressman is looking at entering the race. On the Democrat side, all eyes are on Roy Cooper. The former governor will reportedly decide this summer on whether he will run. Former Democrat Congressman Wiley Nickel, of Cary, has already declared for the seat. Democrats haven't won a senate seat in almost 20 years. The last democratic senator was Kay Hagan, who Tillis defeated in 2014. VIDEO: Sen. Thom Tillis announces he is not running for reelection
