Resident Evil 9 could be revealed at Summer Game Fest this week

The next instalment in Capcom's Resident Evil series will debut this week according to sources, with all signs pointing to a 2026 launch. Ahead of Summer Game Fest and the other showcases of this month's not-E3 season, one of the big questions is whether we'll see more on the future of Resident Evil. Capcom confirmed Resident Evil 9 was in development last July, with Koshi Nakanishi, the director of Resident Evil 7, at the helm. Since then, we've heard nothing official about the next entry, but rumours suggest it will sport an open world and star Leon S. Kennedy. Almost a year later, several insiders have claimed Capcom is preparing for a big reveal at Summer Game Fest on Friday, June 6. The rumour first appeared via YouTuber ScreenFire Germany last month, where they claimed the first trailer for Resident Evil 9 will be shown at the event, albeit with the caveat that the information is 'without guarantee' and could 'change'. The source, who was the first to claim remakes of Resident Evil Zero and Code Veronica are in development, also states that Resident Evil 9 is planned for the first quarter of 2026 – although it will likely come after March, according Capcom's recent financial projections. Resident Evil celebrates its 30th anniversary next year, on March 22, so it's very possible the ninth entry could land somewhere around this date. Following these claims, fellow Resident Evil insider AestheticGamer aka Dusk Golem has now stated they are '95% positive' that Resident Evil 9 will show up at Summer Game Fest. (1/3) Again, not like I can give 100% confirmation, no one's directly told me or the like. But at this point I'm like 95% positive we're on the verge of RE9 being revealed at SGF. This is the first time behind the scenes there's a lot of buzz in the grapevine, lots of rumblings — AestheticGamer aka Dusk Golem (@AestheticGamer1) June 2, 2025 In a post on X, Dusk Golem wrote: 'Again, not like I can give 100% confirmation, no one's directly told me or the like. 'This is the first time behind the scenes there's a lot of buzz in the grapevine, lots of rumblings and the sorta activity behind the scenes that usually are signs we're about to get a Resident Evil game announced.' While they don't go into specifics on these 'rumblings', Capcom recently appeared to tease Resident Evil 9 in a video promoting Resident Evil 4 remake. More Trending The past two mainline Resident Evil games, Resident Evil 7 and Resident Evil Village, were both announced during Sony events in 2016 and 2020, respectively. Sony hasn't announced a State Of Play presentation for this month, but one is rumoured. However, Capcom is a confirmed partner at Summer Game Fest, so it's possible Resident Evil 9 could show up at the latter instead. It's also true that publishers often change their mind about their reveals at the last minute and it may well be the case that Capcom hasn't 100% settled on an unveiling this month. Beyond the ninth entry, Capcom is also rumoured to be working on several Resident Evil remakes, with the next one expected to be Resident Evil Zero. Fans Think Capcom is Teasing a New Resident Evil Game

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek's network of contributors Capcom has been on a hot streak in recent years, having released a number of games that have broken back-to-back records for their series and for Capcom as a whole. One of those games was the Resident Evil 4 remake, which became the fastest-selling game in the entire series, even outpacing the widely well-received Resident Evil 7 and Resident Evil Village. Now, in a celebratory post for that achievement, fans think they've spotted a hint at the next game in the series. Capcom posted a celebratory video to the official Capcom Dev 1 Twitter account, and it's very strange. It shows Ada Wong ringing a tower bell, after which the infected members of Valdelobos make their way to the village center, donning party hats in the process. One villager shuts a door revealing the text "Celebrating 10 million players," after which we get treated to a strange musical performance and a sign that has fans convinced Resident Evil 9 is on the way soon. Capcom The sign, which says "thank you for playing" in multiplier languages, features a large X-shape, followed by a single horizontal plank below it. It looks innocuous at first, but as fans noticed, if you rotate the image 90 degrees to the right, it looks a lot like "IX" — 9 in Roman numerals. Wait a minute. That's Resident Evil 9, right? — 叉³ (@PVCFork3) April 25, 2025 The timing certainly adds up, if this really is a tease for Resident Evil 9. The last game in the main series, Resident Evil Village (also known as Resident Evil 8), was released four years ago, in 2021, while the game before that, Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, was released four years prior, in 2017. If Capcom intends to keep up the pace, a 2025 release for Resident Evil 9 would make the most sense — although as with most publishers, Capcom could be waiting to announce the game or release date in fear of clashing with GTA 6. It comes after the recently released Monster Hunter Wilds reached over 10 million sales in just two weeks, a record both for the series and for Capcom itself. The previous record holder was Monster Hunter World, which sold 6 million units in the same timeframe.

Resident Evil 4 remake is fastest selling entry with 10 million sales

Capcom's Resident Evil 4 remake has become the fastest selling entry in the entire franchise, as attention turns towards the whereabouts of the next entry. Monster Hunter: World might be Capcom's highest-selling game ever (likely to be overtaken by the more recent Monster Hunter Wilds) but the Resident Evil franchise is still its best-selling IP overall. This has been reinforced in updated sales numbers from Capcom and it's particularly good news for 2023's Resident Evil 4. The remake has officially sold over 10 million units worldwide since it launched, which is a one million increase from January this year. According to Capcom, this is the fastest any title in the series has hit this milestone, so it's very possible it could become the best-selling entry ever down the line. Currently, the highest-selling entries are Resident Evil 2 remake and Resident Evil 7, which have now both sold more than 15 million units each. Resident Evil Village, meanwhile, has surpassed 11 million sales, while Resident Evil 3 remake has sold over 10 million, after five years. As of December 31, 2024, the Resident Evil series has sold more than 167 million units in total, with Monster Hunter, which only became popular in the West relatively recently, on 108 million. Capcom has already confirmed more remakes are on the way, with rumours suggesting the next one will be Resident Evil Zero. While the company has only announced ports of Street Fighter 6 and Kunitsu-Gami: Path Of The Goddess for the Switch 2 so far, it feels inevitable that Resident Evil 4 remake will eventually make its way to the system – which will likely spike sales even further. More Trending The previous remakes, Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3, along with Resident Evil 7 and Village, were all released on the original Switch in cloud versions, while many of the original games, including the OG Resident Evil 4, are available on the Nintendo eShop. Capcom officially announced Resident Evil 9 last year, to be led by Resident Evil 7 director Koshi Nakanishi, but nothing has been said or shown of the game so far. There are rumours it will be open world, to some degree, using technology from Dragon's Dogma 2, and will mark a 'big reinvention' for the series akin to Resident Evil 7 – which shifted the horror to a first person perspective for the first time. While Capcom has given no indication of when it could be revealed, many fans suspect the first trailer will be shown at some point this year – with the most likely venue being Summer Game Fest on June 6. Or perhaps one of the standalone not-E3 showcases from either Xbox or PlayStation. Email gamecentral@ leave a comment below, follow us on Twitter, and sign-up to our newsletter. Resident Evil 9 Leaker Asks Fans to Brace for Major Changes

It has been nearly four years since Resident Evil Village launched for PS5 and PS4. While Capcom has released games within the franchise, including Resident Evil Re:Verse and the Resident Evil 4 remake, the next mainline entry has yet to be revealed. However, it seems we may finally get the first look at sometime this year according to a known leaker. According to Dusk Golem, most known for their horror video game leaks, Resident Evil 9 will 'almost definitely' be revealed sometime this year. They also claim that the reason why it has yet to be revealed is due to the scope of the game. It is, supposedly, a 'big reinvention of the series,' similar to how entries like Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 7 revolutionized the franchise. 'The thing I think people will realize when RE9 is revealed is the reason this game is taking so long is because it's like a big reinvention of the series, to the same level as RE4 & RE7,' claims the leaker. 'It's not going to play just like RE7/RE8 or the Remakes, it's trying new things & very ambitious. It will almost definitely be revealed this year, so just hold tight.' Details on Resident Evil 9 are very sparse, and are mostly just rumors. One rumor suggests the next mainline entry in the beloved horror franchise will be open-world. One concrete detail we do know is Resident Evil 7's Koshi Nakanishi is heading development for Resident Evil 9, which was revealed during Capcom Next last year. 'We're making a new Resident Evil,' Nakanishi said during the Capcom Next showcase. 'It was really difficult to figure out what to do after (Resident Evil 7). But I found it, and to be honest, it feels substantial. I can't share any details just yet, but I hope you're excited for the day I can.'
