Games Inbox: When will the new Tomb Raider be revealed?

The Wednesday letters wonders when people will start asking about GTA 7, as one reader considers going to the Switch 2 midnight launch. To join in with the discussions yourself email gamecentral@ Forgotten treasure I've seen a lot of rumours about Resident Evil 9 or Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 being at the Summer Game Fest, or Xbox or Sony's events, but I don't think I've seen anyone even pretend that Tomb Raider might be there. It is now seven years since the last game and while they said they were doing a new one we haven't seen or heard anything about it. I know the developer and their owner has been having problems but surely this is the high priority? The moneymaker they have to get right? It sounds like things are going badly to me and yet we haven't heard about that either. It's like the game has just disappeared, never to be talked about again. I really hope someone does this summer though. Dace Serious games I think I'm at the point where there has to be another major Nintendo exclusive out this year or I'm not getting the Switch 2 until there's more first party games than we know of now. I'm sure Mario Kart World is great, and maybe Donkey Kong Bananza as well, but I need to see a bit more variety than that. A new Zelda or Splatoon, for a slightly more serious vibe, would've been fine but we've not heard about either and there's no sign of any equivalent or anything that isn't that dumb Dynasty Warriors spin-off. It's a strange omission really, because all they need was a quick CGI trailer, or even just part of montage, and a vague promise and that would've been it. But at the moment I have really no idea what serious games are coming to Switch 2 or when I might find out more. Austin Analogue launch As the concept of physical games slips away from us, I have to say the idea of a midnight launch for the Switch 2 actually seems pretty appealing. I've already taken the Thursday off to play the console, so I might actually do it. Although how long until the concept of a physical console becomes outdated? Streaming is surely only a few years away from becoming mainstream and if you want a computer chip in your head you can already control games with your mind, instead of using a gamepad. The whole world is going digital-only and games are naturally at the forefront of that. It might be the future, but I think I'll go to one more midnight launch while the shops still exist for them to take place in. Vona Email your comments to: gamecentral@ Difficult decision As a very indecisive person, I often have a hard time deciding on what difficulty setting to play a game. Although I'm a very experienced gamer, I'm not the best, but I also don't want an easy ride. I expect difficulty settings in some games, but I've always thought that they are a result of bad design. The game I'm playing at the moment, which I think should not have one, is Forza Horizon 5. The idea that you lose on a particular difficulty setting and then replay it on a lower setting just seems a waste of time and seems completely counterintuitive to how a game should work. What are your thoughts in the matter? Do you share my sentiments at all? John GC: Ultimately, we think it should be decided on a case-by-case basis, but we do have a lot of sympathy with what you're saying. Something like Doom having multiple difficulty levels makes sense, since you're purposefully making it harder for yourself each time, while some family friendly games often have an ultra easy, quasi-invincible mode that also seems appropriate. However, when an ordinary game has three different difficulty levels for no apparent reason we do agree something has probably gone wrong. Star Wars celebration I'm really curious to see if EA is going to react to all these calls for a Star Wars Battlefront 3. They're not exactly ones to waste money usually but it seems like the sort of thing that Lucasfilm themselves might respond to, where they like the idea that people are calling out for a sequel. Worst case scenario is it'd be some free to play rubbish trying to be replace Apex Legends but an actual normal paid-for game, with lots of content and no microtransactions, I would be all for. Problem is that it'd take five years or so to make and who knows what state Star Wars or EA will be in by that point. Some kind of annoucement or beta for 50th anniversary in 2027 would be amazing though. Grackle Free advertising So on this this exact date in one year's time, I could be playing GTA 6? Yeah, count me in as someone that doesn't believe it'll happen. It'll be delayed again and come out in the autumn, which is probably what Take-Two would prefer anyway. Not that it's really going to make any difference, given basically everyone with a console or PC in the world is going to want to buy it. Even if you hate GTA, and I know it's not for everyone, I can't believe there is a single gamer that doesn't at least want to see what it looks like for the graphics and open world alone. Which, to be honest, is why I think a lot of people play it anyway. If this year belongs to the Nintendo Switch 2 then next year is going to be all about GTA 6. At that point, even if you do like it, you're probably going to be sick of hearing about it. But what can you do? This will go way beyond marketing. In fact, they wouldn't have to spend a penny on selling the game as word of mouth will do it all. It will gradually fade back to background noise but then the question becomes: how long until we start talking about GTA 7 instead? Whistler Unexplained pricing So Sony raises the price of the PlayStation 5 one month and then decreases it the next, but only for a few weeks for a sale? Is it even worth asking what's going on? Although the most important question is why did we and a few others get a price rise and the US didn't? Are we literally paying for Trump's tariffs, while the US doesn't get affected at all? Of course, Sony will never be taken up on this because they never do interviews anymore and who knows who's even in control now. So instead we've got to pretend to act grateful for the prices going back to what they were in the first place. Goots I have the rasterisation! I've enjoyed seeing some of the early performance comparisons between the Switch 2 and the current and last gen home consoles. Digital Foundry have taken a lot of stick for saying that the Switch 2 sits somewhere between the PlayStation 4 and PS4 Pro in rasterisation performance (what we'd have conventionally referred to as 'power') but that's a very negative interpretation of what they've said and completely ignores a point that they return to over and over again: the days of new consoles and GPUs being pushed forward solely by hardware grunt are gone. PlayStation 4 level rasterisation in a handheld that has low memory bandwidth, superfast storage, and access to modern features such as DLSS and ray-tracing will produce markedly better looking (and hopefully better running) games than a PlayStation 4. Indeed, some of the footage from Switch 2 docked gameplay is displaying better texture quality and clarity than the Xbox Series S (albeit at a lower native resolution), which is in no small part down to the superiority of DLSS in comparison to the software-based upscaling or anti-aliasing techniques employed by the current and last gen home consoles (other than PS5 Pro). I understand that a lot of people's eyes probably rolled back in their heads reading that, and not just due to my overuse of punctuation. However, I find it absolutely fascinating that we've reached a point where these technologies can help a relatively underpowered console punch so far above its weight in terms of what we, the gamers, actually see on screen. It can only bode well for the next generation of consoles, any future handheld PCs/consoles and hopefully our wallets that tangible performance leaps can be obtained without needing to cram in a GPU that's a foot and a half-long and costs £2K. Maybe PlayStation 5 performance in a handheld isn't as far-fetched as it once seemed. Magnumstache GC: It would certainly help to explain the implied plans for Xbox and PlayStation's next gen portables. Inbox also-ransIt's a shame Nintendo gave up making mini-consoles, I really would've liked one for the Game Boy Advance. My one is broken now and the Switch is too big to really get the same vibe from it. Bootles I read that Doom: The Dark Ages sold less than 1 million copies so far. Game Pass or not that can't be good. I hope it doesn't put them off a Quake reboot. Resident Evil 9 began as a 'multiplayer game' as insider reveals scrapped sequel

An insider has shared details about early plans for Resident Evil 9, amid claims of a canned follow-up to Resident Evil: Revelations 2. While Capcom has confirmed Resident Evil 9 is in development, we still know nothing about the sequel – with an official reveal expected at some point this year. The only details we have about the follow-up to Resident Evil Village is from rumours, which claim it will mark a 'big reinvention' for the series, be open world, and use the same tech as Dragon's Dogma 2. The source of these rumours, AestheticGamer aka Dusk Golem, has now made several claims about the sequel on X, including how it apparently began as a multiplayer title. According to the insider, Resident Evil 9 began development in 2017 as a 'big open world multiplayer game', a decision which was apparently made in response to Resident Evil 7's low sales at launch (it later went onto find success with over 14 million copies sold). It's unclear whether this refers to cooperative or competitive multiplayer, but the leaker claims this original version featured Leon Kennedy and Jill Valentine as the game's protagonists, and was set on a fictional island based off of Singapore. It's claimed Resident Evil 9 underwent a 'pretty heavy reboot' in 2021, around the launch of Resident Evil Village, but 'a few things stayed the same'. According to the insider, one thing which remained was Leon Kennedy as the main character, but Jill was apparently dropped. (3/6) expectations. RE7 went on to have a huge tail in sales, but this was a bit reactionary. And the original version of RE9 was trying to be the opposite of RE7, IE big open world multiplayer game). RE9 originally starred Leon & Jill in a fictional island based off Singapore. — AestheticGamer aka Dusk Golem (@AestheticGamer1) May 22, 2025 While it isn't stated explicitly, it's implied the multiplayer aspect was dropped as well – considering that aspect has never been mentioned before. Past mainline games have leaned on cooperative multiplayer, specifically Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 6, but these are widely considered to be among the worst of the numbered entries. In other posts, Dusk Golem claims Resident Evil 9 is 'designed as a third-person game', so it won't have the first-person perspective of Resident Evil Village. They also claim it will launch in 2026, although Capcom's recent financial reports suggest it will be sometime after March. Beyond Resident Evil 9, the insider claims a sequel to 2015's Resident Evil: Revelations 2 was also in development at some point, but it was cancelled by Capcom in 2022 to prioritise 'manpower and budget' on Resident Evil 4 remake and Resident Evil 9. More Trending Resident Evil: Revelations 2 was an episodic sequel to the 2012 spin-off, which originally released on the Nintendo 3DS. As of March 31 this year, the sequel has sold 3.7 million units, so it's on the lower end of Resident Evil sales overall. Capcom hasn't announced anything about Resident Evil 9, so it's worth taking these rumours with a pinch of salt, but it has dropped hints that news could arrive soon, with all eyes on Summer Game Fest on Friday, June 6, 2025. Aside from the next mainline instalment, Capcom is said to be working on several Resident Evil remakes too, with the next one expected to be Resident Evil Zero. No PlayStation showcase this summer suggest insiders as Sony waits till autumn

Sony is not thought to be planning any showcase or State of Play event this summer, as insiders tease big Japanese game reveals for Geoff Keighley's show. Over the past five years, Sony has held either a State Of Play presentation or a PlayStation Showcase during the months of May or June. This in turn is the continuation of a decades long tradition of preview events originally timed to coincide with the now defunct E3 expo. Along with Microsoft and Nintendo, Sony has always kept to the same basic schedule (although recently they've preferred late May to early June), while third party publishers have relied on Geoff Keighley's Summer Game Fest. The Xbox showcase is already scheduled for June 8 but given the Switch 2 launch in the same week it's unclear what Nintendo will do. Sony has said nothing so far about an event but multiple insiders suggest that they may not have any presentation until September. Earlier this week, reliable insider NateTheHate, aka NateDrake, (who, amongst other things, accurately predicted the Switch 2 reveal date) has said he still hasn't 'heard anything about a May event from Sony for this year'. This was supported by fellow insider John Harker, who responded to a post in the same ResetEra thread, which speculated Sony was targeting September for its next event. 'Indeed,' he wrote in response. While there's a chance Sony could announce a show over the next two weeks, and blindside everybody, there are usually whispers from insiders in the weeks prior – so the lack of any information suggests Sony might not hold any presentation this summer. If true, this would be somewhat surprising, considering Death Stranding 2: On The Beach is just around the corner, on June 26, and there are rumours of a new God Of War game, but it's possible Sony could showcase these during the main Summer Game Fest show. In fact, in a separate post, NateTheHate has said he knows 'of a few Japanese games being shown and/or revealed at Summer Game Fest', which could include Sony. More Trending This post was in response to a ResetEra user who asked if Japanese games will have a big presence at the show, with Kingdom Hearts 4, Resident Evil 9, Persona 6, and the successor to Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth named as their dream reveals. While it's unclear if he was being sarcastic, NateTheHate replied: 'Your expectations don't seem too high, so you should be 'thrilled' per your own words.' Square Enix recently provided an update on Kingdom Hearts 4 for the first time in years, so it's possible a new trailer is on the horizon. Similarly, Capcom appeared to tease Resident Evil 9 in a video last month, while rumours of a Persona 4 remake have also accelerated recently – so there's a chance they will all pop up in some capacity. Although there's normally always a Nintendo Direct in early or mid June the timing of the Switch 2 launch makes it very hard to predict what they might do. But if they do miss their usual spot there's likely to be another Direct in the late summer. Email gamecentral@ leave a comment below, follow us on Twitter, and sign-up to our newsletter. Resident Evil 9 release date narrowed down by Capcom and it's not good news

The chances of Resident Evil 9 being released next year have just shrunk dramatically, unless Capcom feels like putting it up against GTA 6. The summer preview season is about to start soon, with Summer Game Fest due on June 6 (a day after the Switch 2 launch) and Xbox's showcase a few days later on June 8. Although so far there's no indication of PlayStation having an event, even though they usually have theirs in late May. Capcom sometimes has one in the summer as well, although they have also used Summer Game Fest to make big announcements, such as for Monster Hunter Wilds. So plenty of fans are hoping we might finally get a proper reveal of Resident Evil 9 at that time. The game has already been officially announced, last July, but nothing has ever been shown or said about it. It's therefore reasonable to hope for a full reveal in the near future, but Capcom's own financial targets make it very unlikely it'll be out until after March 2026. Although Capcom made no new mention of Resident Evil 9, their latest results – which showed the company to be in rude financial health – included sales predictions of only 8 million for new games in their current financial year, which ends on March 31. That's less than at any time in the last five years, which makes sense because at the moment they don't have anything new scheduled for that period, beyond some Switch 2 ports. Unless they're expecting Resident Evil 9 to be a flop, that makes it seemingly impossible that they're preparing for a launch before April. That's particularly significant because you'd have to go all the way back to Resident Evil 6 to find any mainline entry that launched later in the year than May. Even that was an anomaly, with the majority of new Resident Evil games coming out between January and March. There's nothing stopping Capcom from changing the way they do things, except their kind of is, because GTA 6 is out on May 26 and they're not going to be stupid enough to release it anytime around then. More Trending GTA 6 is almost certainly going to be dominating sales and mindshare for the rest of 2026, so while it's not impossible that Capcom is planning an autumn release for Resident Evil 9 the more likely bet would be that it's not out until 2027 or later. Officially, Capcom has said nothing about the next mainline entry in the series but there have been persistent rumours that it is an open world title. With Resident Evil Village's DLC tying up the plot threads from the last two games more quickly than expected, there's also suggestions that Resident Evil 9 will go back to a third person view, rather than first person. The only thing Capcom has said is that Resident Evil 9 'feels substantial' but while there's a good chance we'll find out more relatively soon it may be a lot longer until anyone gets to actually play it.
