Turkish city calls for help after heat tops 50 degree celsius
Representative Image A choking heatwave left astonished locals in southeastern Turkey calling for state help to pay their air conditioning bills after the temperature surged past 50 degree celsius. "We cannot cope with the heat," ice-cream maker Recep Esiyok, 59, told AFP in Silopi, where meteorologists measured 50.5C on Friday -- a national record. "I've been living in Silopi for about 30 years. I've never seen such heat... I've never seen such heat anywhere." He is getting through the heatwave thanks to the air conditioner in his shop, but is now worried about paying for the electricity. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Experience next-level CPAP comfort with Resmed AirSense 11 ResMed Enquire Now Undo "My bill last month was 59,000 lira (1,450 dollars). We are asking for state support on this issue." 'Incomparable' heat: Before Friday's record, the previous peak in Turkey had been 49.5 degree celsius in August 2023. Scientists agree that climate change caused by humans burning fossil fuels is increasing the likelihood, length and intensity of heatwaves. "The heat has reached a point where it's incomparable to previous years," said Halil Coskun, 52, a local reporter. The country is still in the grip of the heatwave and since Sunday temperatures overall have surged from six to 12 degrees above seasonal norms, according to the state meteorology directorate. Wildfire threat: Turkey has fought fires in several regions since the start of the summer. Last week, 10 people perished while fighting a fire in Eskisehir province. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Monday the country has experienced drier conditions than normal over the past five years as a result of global warming . "Extreme heat, low humidity, and strong winds are unfortunately increasing the risk of fire," he said. He said the state was using drones to monitor and protect forests. The streets were relatively empty and the atmosphere tense in Silopi, a Kurdish city whose main income is trade with Iraq across the border 10 kilometres (six miles) away. "When it's hot, there's no one outside during the day," said Esiyok. Deforestation complaints: Other locals complained at the lack of vegetation to provide relief around the town, which lies at the foot of a mountain. "Unfortunately, the forests here were burned in the past for security reasons," said Coskun. He said the Turkish army cleared them in the search for fighters from the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), a rebel group that recently disarmed. Turkey's parliament this month also passed a bill that opens certain agricultural lands including olive groves to mining activities, despite widespread opposition. "We could at least minimise the heat by planting trees, not by felling them," Coskun said. Electricity bills: Sweating in his kebab shop, another local, Cemil Seher, said that summers in Silopi last not three months, but five. For Seher, 51, air conditioning is no longer a luxury but a necessity. "AC is essential here as much as bread and water," he said. "When the air conditioners are running, the electricity bills are very high," he said, demanding authorities offer discounts for businesses. "I want a discount not only for Silopi but for the entire region from here to Sanliurfa" in the east, he said. "I am not making a profit because I've been working... to pay my electricity bill." 19yo sent to jail ‘till last breath' for raping &killing 8yo neighbour; trial over in 25 days
Agra: A Pocso court in Firozabad has sentenced a 19-year-old man to life in jail "till his last breath" for the rape and murder of an 8-year-old girl in June. His parents and brother, 22, were given seven years of prison term each for concealing the crime. The trial proceedings were completed in 25 working days. The Class 4 student, who hailed from Hathras, was on a visit to her grandmother's place during her summer vacation when the crime was committed. As per details obtained from additional district govt counsel (ADGC), Awdhesh Bhardwaj, the child went missing while playing outside the grandmother's home. "Probe revealed that a man, living next door, sent the child to buy food from a nearby shop that day." Cops eventually nabbed the main accused following a brief encounter. An illegal weapon and the child's neck chain were found on him. During questioning, he confessed and led officers to his house the next day, where the girl's body was recovered from a sack hidden under a pile of bricks. She had been raped and strangled, police said. The ADGC added: "Probe also revealed that the man's parents and brother had assisted him in hiding the child's body. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Experience next-level CPAP comfort with Resmed AirSense 11 ResMed Enquire Now Undo The three of them were arrested and a case was registered under BNS sections 65-2 (rape of woman under 16 years) and 66 (deals with causing death...) along with Pocso Act against all four accused." Considering the heinous nature of the crime, the investigating team took up the case on priority. Police said the entire case procedure from the time of investigation to conviction took about 44 days. The DNA report confirmed "the accused's 'human allele' was found on the child's clothes and vaginal slide, and the accused's hair was also found on the victim's limbs". Cops added that the technical analysis, forensic reports and physical evidence data "were completed swiftly and a scientifically-backed 135-page chargesheet was filed in the court within a week". Special (Pocso) court judge, Mumtaz Ali, found all four accused guilty and delivered the verdict on Wednesday. The 19-year-old was fined Rs 1.4 lakh while his parents and 22-year-old brother were fined Rs 20,000 each.

Planning a trip to Mussoorie? These new tourist rules every traveller must know
If you're planning a long weekend getaway to Mussoorie from 15th to 17th August, there are some important new rules you should know. Mussoorie, the picturesque 'Queen of the Hills,' continues to attract travellers year-round with its cool climate and scenic beauty. However, the sharp rise in tourist numbers has begun to overwhelm the town's infrastructure, leading to traffic snarls, water shortages, and environmental stress. In an effort to manage this surge responsibly, the Uttarakhand government has introduced new digital regulations for both tourists and accommodation providers. From mandatory online guest registration to proposed pre-arrival QR codes, these measures aim to streamline crowd control and protect Mussoorie's fragile ecosystem while ensuring a smoother, safer experience for visitors. Digital guest registration now mandatory in Mussoorie To streamline tourist monitoring, all hotels, guest houses, and homestays in Mussoorie must now register on a new digital portal developed by the Uttarakhand Tourism Department. Accommodation providers are required to log guest details in real time at check-in through the platform. Key details required from accommodation providers: Property name and type (hotel, homestay, etc.) Total number of rooms and guest capacity Owner's name and contact information Once registered, establishments must regularly update guest check-in data on the portal. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Experience next-level CPAP comfort with Resmed AirSense 11 ResMed Enquire Now Undo The goal is to build a centralised, transparent database to support better crowd and infrastructure management. Tourist pre-registration may soon be required in Mussoorie Beyond regulating accommodations, authorities are considering a mandatory tourist pre-registration system during peak seasons. Visitors may soon need to register online before travelling to Mussoorie. The proposed system would include: OTP-based online registration Submission of traveller and vehicle details Generation of a QR code upon registration Visitors would need to present this QR code at one of Mussoorie's main entry points: Kimadi, Kempty Fall, or Kuthal Gate, each equipped with Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) systems for verification. Why Mussoorie is introducing these new measures Tourist numbers to Mussoorie reportedly doubled between 2022 and 2024, boosting local businesses but also placing immense pressure on the town's infrastructure. The surge in visitors has led to frequent traffic jams, a shortage of parking space, mismanagement of solid waste, and a noticeable decline in water availability. Environmental concerns have become so serious that the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed the Uttarakhand government to regulate tourist footfall in ecologically sensitive areas. These new measures are part of a broader effort to strike a sustainable balance, encouraging tourism while protecting Mussoorie's natural environment for future generations. What Mussoorie's new rules mean for travellers If you're planning a visit to Mussoorie, here's how you can stay prepared under the new guidelines: Book accommodation that is officially registered with the Uttarakhand Tourism portal. Ask about digital check-in procedures when making your reservation. Stay updated on whether tourist pre-registration becomes mandatory, and complete the process in advance if required. Carry your QR code and ensure your vehicle details are accurate for hassle-free entry through checkpoints. As Mussoorie embraces a more digitised and sustainable tourism model, travellers are encouraged to do their part by following these new regulations. These steps aim to ensure that the hill station remains as welcoming and beautiful for future visitors as it is today.
