AI in space operations: Opportunities and challenges

As Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies evolve, they hold immense potential for transforming space operations. However, there are significant challenges for both Earth-based and onboard AI, including cybersecurity threats, supply chain vulnerabilities, and the complexity of operating in extreme environments. Given the sector's strategic nature, the national security implications of these challenges make it imperative that India adopts a comprehensive approach to AI development in space. It must leverage its own strengths as well as strategic collaborations with trusted partners to balance innovation with security. This brief examines how key spacefaring countries are integrating AI into their space operations, identifies their strengths and areas of development, and charts a way forward for India's AI-driven space ambitions. In the new golden age of space exploration, AI is pushing the boundaries of human capabilities even further than previously imagined possible—by revolutionising space operations, from planning and automation to launch and communication. As the sector goes through a period of exponential growth, AI will be a key to unlocking the full potential of space exploration and creating breakthroughs for anticipated commercial ventures such as space tourism. India has acknowledged the importance of this niche. The Indian Space Research Organisation's (ISRO) Respond Basket 2023 included eight research areas focused on AI and Machine Learning (ML). It has also launched initiatives like the 'AI for Space and Geospatial Innovation: ISRO Immersion Startup Challenge' in 2024, that is aimed at fostering the development of AI applications in space. However, like in any other sector, AI in space is fraught with challenges and uncertainties. Given the sector's strategic nature, these threats are posed not just to the operations but to national security, overall. India can learn from and partner with other spacefaring nations to address these challenges while driving innovation in its domestic ecosystem. This brief examines how key countries are deploying AI in space operations, the challenges they face, and their strengths and areas of development. It outlines a path for the future of AI in space. Housing crisis 'gotten away from government' as 2,000 apply for 20 cost rental homes

Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info The government has been slammed for letting the housing crisis "get away" from it after it emerged almost 2,000 people had applied for 20 cost rental homes. Applications for the one and two-bedroom apartments at Griffin Point in Clongriffin opened on Tuesday. According to housing body Respond, the one and two-bed apartments will have rents set at least 25 per cent below market rates. The monthly rent for the one-bed cost rentals is €1,326, while the two-beds cost €1,478. Cost rental homes are open to those who do not qualify for social housing but have a net annual household income of less than €66,000. With a week still to go until applications close for the 20 homes in Griffin Point, 1,857 queries have been received by Respond, reports the Irish Times. Labour Party housing spokesperson Conor Sheehan has hit out the the government, who delivered 10,595 new-build social homes against a target of 12,930. The Limerick TD called on Housing Minister James Browne to outline plans for the delivery of affordable homes. He said: 'Report after report, statistic after statistic, everything points to the same conclusion: Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael have no plan. "Homelessness figures continue to climb, rents remain sky-high, and now we see house prices spiralling out of control once again. This Government has chosen to sit on the sidelines while people suffer the consequences of their inaction. "Minister Browne hit the headlines last month for attempting to appoint someone to check his homework, rather than put the Strategic Housing Office on a legislative footing so it could have real power to impact delivery of homes. "The number of people applying for homes in Clongriffin represents a snapshot of the sheer demand and desperate need for affordable housing." Deputy Sheehan also hit out at the "failed" Housing for All project and called for more to be done to help those on single incomes. He added: "More than 400,000 people in Ireland live alone, yet every time the Government talk about housing it's based on joint incomes. "Government continues to set housing policy that is based on the assumption that people should aspire to couple up. "The sheer volume of applications for homes in Clongriffin highlights the myriad of ways the housing crisis has gotten away from Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil. Where is the action on the crisis of our generation?" Join our Dublin Live breaking news service on WhatsApp. Click this link to receive your daily dose of Dublin Live content. Almost 2,000 applications for just 20 Dublin cost rental homes

Almost 2,000 people have applied for just 20 cost-rental homes in north Dublin , with applications open for another week. There have been 1,857 applications for 20 one- and two-bedroom apartments built by approved housing body (AHB) Respond at Griffin Point in Clongriffin, Dublin 13 . Applications opened on its website on Tuesday and will remain open until May 30th. Rent for the one-bedroom apartments will be €1,326 per month, while the two-bedroom units are €1,478 per month. READ MORE Griffin Point will have a total of 64 cost-rental homes in its wider 397-unit development when completed in February 2026. Cost-rental homes are designed for people who do not qualify for social housing but have a household net annual income of less than €66,000. [ Ireland's rising rents: 'Our budget would have been €1,300 a month, there isn't even anything listed for that' Opens in new window ] Rents must be 25 per cent lower than regular market rents in the area and are based on the cost of building, managing and maintaining the homes. Tenants also have long-term security, with leases of several years' duration available. The homes are delivered by AHBs, local authorities and the Land Development Agency (LDA) and do not include any profit for a developer. The local authorities and AHBs apply for government funding and grants to help cover the cost of building or buying these homes. The State missed its target for delivery of social homes last year by almost 20 per cent, with just 10,595 new-build social homes delivered, compared with its target of 12,930. Responding to the figures when they were published by the Department of Housing in April, Minister for Housing James Browne acknowledged the completions had fallen short of the targets and pointed to the performance of local authorities. He said he would publish quarterly performance reports that would 'clearly outline' how each local authority is delivering on individual targets for new-build social housing. However, the report found a record level of cost-rental homes were delivered by AHBs last year, seeing the figure more than double to more than 1,200 homes. A total of 3,860 cost-rental homes have been delivered in the State since the scheme was launched.
