Memorial Day weekend chaos: Boats burn, crash and sink on Colorado River, Lake Havasu

Two boats sank and numerous others were involved in crashes and fires on the Colorado River and Lake Havasu in northwestern Arizona through the Memorial Day weekend, according to the Mohave County Sheriff's Office. A dozen deputies patrolled up and down the lower Colorado River, on the water at Lake Havasu and through Topock and Davis Camp in Bullhead City, according to a Facebook post from the Sheriff's Office. Deputies dealt with more than 260 boaters, handing out 30 citations, the post said. They also investigated nine boat crashes that included injuries, five without injuries, assisted 29 boaters, performed six water rescues and responded to nine medical emergencies, the Sheriff's Office reported. On Lake Havasu, two separate boat fires happened on back-to-back days, along with two boat sinkings. On May 23, a boat caught fire at the Crazy Horse Marina. The boat operator suffered burns to his face and arms but was able to jump from the vessel, the Sheriff's Office confirmed. The fully engulfed boat was extinguished by patrol boats. On May 24, a boat launched at Havasu Riviera before bursting into flames. The operator was able to jump into the water without injuries, and a fire boat from the San Bernardino County Fire Department arrived on the scene and extinguished the blaze, the Facebook post detailed. The boat sank to the bottom of the lake, closing the launch ramp and delaying others, the Sheriff's Office confirmed. A vehicle and trailer were reported to have gone underwater the same day at Lake Havasu State Park, prompting deputies to send divers out, but no one was found inside the vehicle, the Sheriff's Office said. A boat crashed the same day on the Colorado River near the sandbar, with multiple people injured, the Sheriff's Office said. The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department was investigating the incident. On May 25, deputies responded to reports of a boat sinking in the north basin of the lake near Crazy Horse Campground. It sank after striking a large wave, causing water to come onboard, but eight people were able to safely escape, according to the Sheriff's Office. The boat operator was cited for having children under the age of 13 on the boat without a life jacket, the Sheriff's Office confirmed. What was the mysterious streak of light? Here's what we know about the Southwest sighting

On the night of May 16, a large beam of light resembling a spotlight was seen shooting into the night sky in the Southwest, but its source remains unknown. A Facebook post sharing the mysterious light — reportedly visible from Safford — quickly gained traction, earning 3,000 likes and more than 800 comments by the following evening. "Can someone explain to me what this is?" read a message from numerous commenters. Dozens of images posted in the comments depicted what appeared to be the same sight in cities like Fountain Hills, Payson, and next-door New Mexico and Colorado. Separate Facebook posts showed a similar bright beam of light, with some coming from northern Arizona. Meanwhile, posts on X from New Mexico captured the light appearing and then fading into the night sky. Public affairs offices for Luke Air Force Base in the Phoenix area, Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in southern Arizona, and Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque did not immediately respond to The Arizona Republic's request for comment regarding the mysterious light. Although the source of the beam remained unclear, social media comment sections were filled with theories. Despite the speculation, no clear or confirmed explanation had emerged. One of the theories included a Chinese rocket launched the same day from northwest China, carrying a payload of satellites to be deployed, according to Reuters. Some speculated the light could have been caused by a space weather phenomenon known as Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement, or STEVE, which is created by energized particles in Earth's atmosphere. According to the effect can resemble the northern lights. Others suggested it might have been a light pillar, a phenomenon where beams of light appear due to the reflection of light off ice crystals in the atmosphere. Frozen mac and cheese bites have been recalled. Here's where they were sold in Arizona

Frozen mac and cheese bites sold in Arizona and nationwide have been recalled due to potential metal contamination, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The recall affects more than 4,200 packages of Three Cheese Mac and Cheese Bites produced by Feel Good Foods. The products were sold at Arizona retailers, including Sprouts Farmers Market, AJ's Fine Foods, and Whole Foods, according to the manufacturer's website. The impacted products had a best-by date of 6/19/26, Lot Number: 24354AV1, and 06/20/26, Lot Number: 24355AV1, both with a UPC number of 899039002808. They came in an 8-ounce (224-gram) yellow carton and contained nine bites per case, according to the FDA recall. The recalled product could contain metal objects in the food, according to the FDA. The recall was voluntarily issued on Feb. 2 and later classified as a Class II recall. This designation indicates that consuming the affected product could lead to temporary adverse health effects, with a low risk of serious health consequences. Those who had the products in their freezer should return them to the place of purchase for a refund. Was Outlook down? Why Microsoft 365 products went offline briefly

Microsoft 365 products including Outlook and OneDrive appeared offline on Saturday afternoon, according to the tech company, but services were beginning to slowly return to normal after a fix to a suspected broken code. Downdetector, operated by data analysts Ookla, detailed an uptick of more than 25,000 reports that Microsoft 365 and its products were offline starting about 2 p.m. Arizona time. Just after 2:30 p.m., Microsoft said it was "investigating an issue in which users may be unable to access Outlook features and services," in a post on social platform X. The account followed up with a post saying the issue was impacting various Microsoft 365 services, without providing an estimated time the issue would be fixed. But as of 2:45 p.m., Microsoft's webpage dedicated to service health initially did not report any issues across products like Outlook and OneDrive. Microsoft then said on X that a fix was imminent after the company "reverted the suspected code" to fix the outage. The website was updated to reflect a status message that Microsoft 365 products made for a consumer audience were impacted, including Microsoft Teams, Outlook, email server and calendar service About 4 p.m., the tech company announced that affected products were returning "to a healthy state," and added an additional update would arrive about 6 p.m., according to the service health page. "We've entered a period of extended monitoring to ensure that the service remains stable, and to address any outstanding impact to other Microsoft 365 services," stated the tech company. About the same time, Downdetector also showed a significant drop in reports of Microsoft 365 products as offline. (This story was updated to add new information.)
