Canadian star hails Calvin Harris as 'f****** legend'
After being introduced to the guitar at a young age, Jessie Reyez has grown into one of the most exciting talents in R&B and Soul today. (Image: Picture credit: Miranda Escoto) Her second EP Being Human in Public was nominated for Best Urban Contemporary Album at the 2020 Grammy Awards and she has co-written Dua Lipa's One Kiss, and now Reyez is moving from strength to strength, and is building quite the résumé for herself. 'This is something I have always dreamt about,' Reyez tells the Glasgow Times. She continues: 'Every time I am on stage, and I have a moment of pure presence – which happens every now and then – I am like 'Holy f****** s***'. I dreamt of doing this as a kid. 'I remember dreaming of being on stages and singing to thousands of people, and the fact I have been able to bring that dream to fruition for my inner child – that is something that is not lost on me.' The pair have written and recorded multiple songs together over the last few years, including One Kiss and Hard To Love, which featured on Harris' album, Funk Wave Sounds Vol 1. (Image: Image: Newsquest) Talking about her love of Scottish accents, the Canadian-born star said she wanted to get better at it before her Glasgow show on September 14. And her plan? To watch Shrek and get pointers from Harris, of course. The 34-year-old said: 'I love that guy, he's so lit. 'Every time I work with him, I learn something. He's a f****** certified legend. He's a master of what he does.' She continued: 'There's something to be said about being in the room with someone that you trust, because there's a different liquidity to the room, it flows differently. 'I'm so stoked every time I get to work with him, especially because he is not just a collaborator, he's legitimately my friend. It's an honour to get to continually work with someone who is my boy, my bro.' We went on to chat about the viral TikTok video, which saw Harris ranting after DJ Nick Bracegirdle, also known as Chicane, accused him of copying the opening chords to his 30-year-old hit, Offshore. DJ Sam Sax remixed the foul-mouthed rant with the opening of Harris's track, Blessings. The piece repeats on a loop as Harris says: "You stupid b*****d. One, you didn't invent the guitar. Two, yeah, it's not the same.' Speaking on the video, Reyez said: 'I love that rant, it tickles me so much. It's so good. 'Scottish rage has such an elegance. It needs to be studied.' So excited': Folk star to perform in Glasgow as part of global tour Reyez's Glasgow show – which will take place at the O2 Academy – comes as part of her Paid In Memories Tour. 'Glasgow is fun, I can't wait to come back,' Jessie said. The tour follows the release of Reyez's new album of the same name, which Jessie said is her first sober album. She added: 'I have just gotten better as an artist. Not to sound pompous, but I have just gotten better at objectively critiquing myself. 'I'm still in vocal lessons and I'm still a student of the game, so I feel I get better with every album.' She continued: 'Being sober as well, my body is paying me back with consistency and flow – and that is what people can expect from the upcoming shows. 'They can also expect a better performer and to come to my show and make memories.' Tickets for the O2 Academy Glasgow show are still available to purchase. To grab tickets, visit Ticketmaster.

Music Review: Jessie Reyez returns in triumph with ‘Paid in Memories'
Most artists would make the first song on their new album something welcoming, trendy or pleasing, at least to make the Spotify algorithm happy. Not Jessie Reyez. She crafted a song with clear red flags — 'I Never Said I Was Sane' — a totally bananas opening cut that includes screaming, taunting, religious texts, whispering, heavy distortion, a little flute and a babyish pout. 'Lost some screws along the way to L.A.,' she sings. That's why Reyez is always a glorious sonic handful and why the album 'Paid in Memories' is another of her messy triumphs. Think of her as the anti-Tate McRae. The Toronto-bred musician is a magpie of an artist, taking a little from hip-hop here, dipping into some alt-rock on another, using a cool soul lick or a Latin beat. If you know where the next song is taking you, you're lying. She can go from purring along to a plunky guitar to feet-planted battle rapping, even in the same song. Reyez, who in the past leaned on co-writers, this time often supplies the music and lyrics alone, a sign of her continuing maturity and control. Few artists could accommodate such varied big-name guests as Lil Wayne, Miguel, 6lack, Lil Yachty, Deyaz, Big Sean and Ari Lennox. Each time, she makes it work on her terms. One song — 'Couldn't Be Me' — features Sam Smith, and you might expect to hear their voices swirling together in a melodic, naughty club banger. Instead, Reyez sings a melancholy ballad of lost love, with the last minute taken up by a touching voicemail by Smith sending her encouragement after the breakup. There's often a bite to Reyez's songs so it's refreshing to hear unalloyed sincerity on 'Goliath,' a pure love song: 'You love me like a Sunday morning/But you kiss me like a Friday night.' There's also the fun dance-pop 'New York Baby,' which has the vibe of a hysterically low-rent 'American Boy' by Estelle (she lands in Newark and is picked up by her lover in a truck). 'Jeans' with Miguel is destined to be one of the sexiest songs of 2025 ('Cause you fit/Better than a pair of jeans, baby') and 'Psilocybin & Daisies,' lifts from '1979' performed by The Smashing Pumpkins, terrifically. Who samples from the Pumpkins? She and 6lack extend their long, fruitful collaborations — this time she accommodatingly stylizes the song '6lessings' for him as their styles swirl perfectly — and she gets slinky with the murky dance track 'Palo Santo.' Reyez gets very personal at times — her estrangements with her brother is the topic of a song — and on 'Been Abouta Year' takes stock of her life: 'Where's the famous silver lining I was promised?/To be honest/Life is falling kinda short.' You and us all, sister. Just glad you're here. ___

Are ICE raids happening in Kansas?
WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – After a crackdown on immigration across the country, there are many questions in Kansas. KSN reached out to local law enforcement to see if they will be participating in the enforcement of immigration and undocumented Americans. 'ICE has asked us a couple times over the years if we are interested, and so far, we are not interested,' said Sedgwick County Sheriff Jeff Easter. Easter is referring to the 287 G program. 'So 287 G means they (Immigration and Custom personnel) train our personnel inside the jail to run all those checks for ICE,' said Easter. Easter says when it comes to individuals who are arrested and placed into their custody, they will send out information as required by ICE for those suspected and booked into jail for crimes not related to immigration. 'We fingerprint them. We send them to the computer databases that ICE use,' said Easter. 'And they put detainers on them. And we honor those detainers.' In Garden City, where there is a strong immigrant population, KSN reached out to the police to ask what was happening. One spokesperson for the Garden City Police Department says there are many questions about Immigration and Customs. Some wonder if ICE will be more active than it has been in the past. ICE arrests 956 Sunday as nationwide raids continue 'Kind of keeping track of this, as I think a lot of agencies are. We've got some (agencies) that say, no, we are not assisting and whatnot,' said Erinn Reyez, a public information officer for GCPD. 'We don't have an MOU or any kind of formal agreement on whether we would or we wouldn't.' KSN asked Reyez if there have been any recent raids or if ICE has ramped up activity in the area. 'We are not aware of any planned raids or are there any that have occurred in Garden City,' said Reyez. Reyez says there is fear in the community over the chance that ICE could ramp up activity. 'And I will say ICE has had an office out here for several years,' said Reyez. 'We don't have, to our knowledge, no planned raids or there haven't been any that occurred in Garden City.' 'Yeah, there's a lot of fear and concern over this. Understandably. But regardless of everything our mission is to protect our community. Safeguard our community and be there for the citizens we swore to protect and serve,' said Reyez. When asked if Wichita police would help with the 287 G program, KSN got a response from Andrew Ford, chief public information officer for the Wichita Police Department: 'The Wichita Police Department does not participate in the 287(g) program. Chief Sullivan has instructed his executive team, command staff, supervisors, and officers to follow WPD policy. WPD will not be part of any immigration task force.'
