2 men seriously injured in Voluntown car crash
VOLUNTOWN, Conn. (WPRI) — Two men were seriously injured in a crash just over the Rhode Island state line in Voluntown Tuesday morning, according to Connecticut State Police. Troopers were called to Route 165 near Bennett Road just before 5 a.m. to investigate reports of a two-car crash. Police said it appears a man was driving a Land Rover Discovery down Beach Pond Road when he suddenly crossed over the center line and crashed into an oncoming Chevrolet Silverado. The driver of the Chevrolet Silverado, identified as a 33-year-old Plainfield man, had to be removed from his car by firefighters, according to police. He was flown to Rhode Island Hospital with serious injuries. Police said the driver of the Land Rover Discovery, a 22-year-old South Windsor man, was also seriously injured and brought to William W. Backus Hospital for treatment. The exact cause of the crash remains under investigation at this time. Two people seriously injured in head-on collision on Route 165 in Voluntown
State police are investigating a head-on crash early Tuesday on Route 165 in Voluntown that seriously injured two drivers. The two-car crash occurred around 4:45 a.m. in the area of Beach Pond Road, according to Connecticut State Police. State police said a Chevrolet Silverado K1500 driven by a 33-year-old Plainfield man was traveling east on Beach Pond Road when a 2020 Land Rover traveling west crossed into the eastbound lane and collided with the Silverado. The Chevrolet driver was extricated from the vehicle. According to police, he suffered serious injuries and was flown via Life Star to Rhode Island Hospital. The Land Rover driver, a 22-year-old man from South Windsor, was also extricated from his vehicle. State police said he was transported to William W. Backus Hospital with serious injuries. The Collision, Analysis and Reconstruction Squad responded to the scene to conduct the ongoing investigation, state police said. According to state police, Route 165 was closed for the investigation. Man arraigned following high-speed Burrillville crash
BURRILLVILLE, R.I. (WPRI) — A Burrillville man appeared in court Tuesday morning, accused of driving more than 100 mph before losing control and crashing last month. Jake Surprenant, 30, was charged with reckless driving and numerous traffic violations after he allegedly crashed his pickup truck into a utility pole on April 8. BACKGROUND: Man drove 100+ mph before Burrillville crash Multiple Jaws of Life were used to extract Surprenant from the truck, after which he was flown to Rhode Island Hospital. In court, Surprenant appeared to be wearing a back brace, walked with a limp, and had a large scratch across his face. He was ordered not to drive, to complete safety education classes through the DMV, and then was released on $1,000 personal recognizance. Surprenant has no prior criminal record but faces multiple citations in traffic court. He is due back in court at the end of May. Police: Officer-involved shooting investigation underway in Johnston
JOHNSTON, R.I. (WPRI) — Johnston Police said an officer discharged their weapon after a man drove towards an officer, striking him late Saturday night. Around 11:30 on Saturday night, Johnston police officers responded a reported disturbance at a Shell gas station at 1396 Hartford Avenue. Police said the call was made by a third party and reported a potential argument between a male and female in the parking lot. When police arrived, officers located the involved female and the male, as described by the caller, and said the male was sitting alone in the driver's seat of a white Nissan Sentra. As one of the responding officers exited his patrol vehicle, police said the driver of the Sentra accelerated forward and struck the officer. That's when police said the officer discharged his service weapon and fired multiple rounds at the driver, who was struck by the gunfire. Police said the driver continued across Hartford Avenue but hit a pylon in front of a nearby business. Officers responded and said they helped the 28-year-old male driver who was transported to Rhode Island Hospital for his injuries. Police said he was expected tosurvive. The officer also sustained minor injuries, according to police, and was transported to the hospital for treatment as well. Johnston Police said it will investigate the officer-involved shooting in accordance with the Rhode Island Attorney General's protocol for a review and joint investigation by members of the Attorney General's Office, Rhode Island State Police, and Johnston Police Department. State police: 78-year-old woman airlifted to hospital after being hit by SUV in Sterling
A pedestrian was airlifted to a Rhode Island hospital after being struck by an SUV in Sterling on Tuesday. The crash was reported just after 12:15 p.m. on Route 14A in the area of Newport Road where a 2011 Ford Explorer traveling east hit a 78-year-old Sterling woman who was attempting to cross the road, according to Connecticut State Police. The pedestrian, state police said, suffered serious life-threatening injuries and was transported aboard Life Star to Rhode Island Hospital. Her condition was not immediately clear. According to state police, the driver of the Explorer, a 45-year-old Sterling woman, did not report any injuries. The crash remains under investigation.
