MIRI (Aug 6): Contractors who complete their projects within the stipulated time frame or ahead of schedule deserve to be considered for future tenders, said Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin. The Transport Minister stressed that the same consideration should not be extended to contractors whose performance is poor with delayed projects or quality that falls short of expectations. 'There have been cases where projects faced serious delays and cost overruns due to the failure of contractors. In such situations, we have had to appoint 'rescue contractors' to complete the works, which leads to further expenses,' he told reporters after visiting several project sites under Senadin constituency here today. Lee said it is important for Miri City Council (MCC) to have a clear evaluation system, whereby contractors with proven track records are prioritised for future tenders, while those with poor performance must improve their standards to remain competitive. He cited the example of the Sungai Dalam Road upgrading project, which was completed ahead of schedule. 'The RM300,000 project began on June 9, 2025 and was completed on July 28, compared to its scheduled completion date of Aug 8, this year. The original four-metre-wide road in this suburban area has now been widened, and two other roads in the vicinity have also been upgraded and completed early. 'During my visit, residents expressed satisfaction with the quality of work done by the contractor,' he said. Lee also inspected the road in front of Riam Methodist Kindergarten and Jalan Tung San Garden. Accompanying him were MCC assistant engineer Peter Ukin and Sarawak United People's Party Senadin secretary Jeffery Phang. lead Lee Kim Shin Miri City Council
