Lorde Was Surprised When ‘Ribs' Returned to the Charts: ‘It's Crazy That It Works on People Still'

Lorde just released her first original solo single in four years last month, but 'What Was That' wasn't the only one of her songs to debut on the Billboard Hot 100 after its release. Her Pure Heroine track 'Ribs,' which has become a fan favorite over the years, debuted at Number 99, nearly 12 years after it came out. 'It's crazy that it works on people still,' Lorde told Rolling Stone, during her interview sessions for the magazine's May cover story. 'It's a mystery to me.' She had announced an appearance in the park on April 22nd, but due to the immense size of the crowd, fans were ordered to disperse by the NYPD. In lieu of Lorde's appearance, the lingering audience sung and danced to 'Ribs,' among other songs of hers, in the park. She would post videos of the 'Ribs' moments in particular on her Instagram page. (Those fans who waited would be rewarded when Dev Hynes would plug in his phone to someone's speakers to play 'What Was That' and then again when Lorde would finally join them a couple hours later.) 'I'm now seeing that Virgin has this connection to Pure Heroine, and to this young, brave part of myself. I'm seeing that all these albums have connective tissue,' she said. 'Having 'Ribs' bubble up next to songs I've written when I was 28. I can't wait to see what continues to bubble up when more of this album is out. What are the connections going to be?' Lorde's new album Virgin comes out in June. Best of Rolling Stone The 50 Greatest Eminem Songs All 274 of Taylor Swift's Songs, Ranked The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time

Lorde Scores A Pair Of Hot 100 Hits — And Their Journeys Couldn't Be More Different

Lorde lands two hits on the Hot 100 this week — new single 'What Was That' at No. 36 and viral ... More favorite 'Ribs' at No. 99 — amid excitement for upcoming album Virgin. NEW YORK, NY - MAY 5: Lorde is seen at the 2025 Costume Institute Benefit Gala celebrating the opening of the Exhibition "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style" on May 5, 2025 in New York City. (Photo by XNY/Star Max/GC Images) Lorde recently began the latest promotional period in her music career. Her upcoming album Virgin is expected this summer, and its lead single, "What Was That," arrived with quite a lot of fanfare. As the tune debuts across a variety of Billboard rankings, the New Zealand-based singer secures a pair of smashes on the Hot 100. The Grammy winner does so not because she shared multiple new cuts at the same time, but thanks to the power of her brand new drop, as well as a viral moment. Fans have also flocked to a track she released more than a decade ago, turning it into the hit it never had a chance to become when it was first unveiled. Lorde scores two new Hot 100 hits this frame with "What Was That" and "Ribs." The former, her current focus track, opens at No. 36 on the tally, giving her another top 40 smash. At the same time, "Ribs" barely makes it to Billboard's list of the most consumed songs in America, arriving at No. 99 on the roster. Throughout her career, Lorde has now collected 12 Hot 100-charting songs, upping her count by two this time around. "Ribs" has gone viral recently, thanks in part to the release of "What Was That." Lorde showed up at Washington Square Park in New York City, where a huge crowd of fans had gathered to see her. She stood in the middle of a massive circle and played "What Was That," but the crowd also later sang "Ribs" to her, and they all enjoyed the moment. Countless videos and photos went viral on social media, reminding millions of people around the world how much they love "Ribs." That attention has translated into a huge uptick in both sales and streams of the composition, making it a Hot 100 success story. Originally released on Lorde's debut album Pure Heroine, "Ribs" was never an official single, but rather a promotional cut. The tune arrived just a few months after "Royals," Lorde's official first single, which turned her into a global superstar nearly overnight. Fans have loved the album cut for more than a decade, and now their collective buying and streaming has turned it into a smash. While "Ribs" reaches the Hot 100 and also debuts on several other Billboard tallies, "What Was That" is the real smash this frame. The tune arrives on eight different rankings and climbs on two others it managed to appear on last frame after just a short period of availability. Lorde has been away from the spotlight for several years, and her previous album Solar Power was not as well received as some of her past projects. When she shared "What Was That," it was considered a return to form — and it has now given her the comeback she's been searching for.

'Floribama Shore' star dead at 33

"Floribama Shore" star Kirk Medas has died from liver failure at 33. On Friday night, the official Instagram account for the reality television series announced the news. "We are deeply saddened to learn of the tragic passing of Kirk Medas, a beloved member of the Floribama Shore family. Our hearts go out to his family, friends and fans during this difficult time," the caption read. Medas' family told TMZ that he had been hospitalized for "severe case of necrotizing pancreatitis." His father confirmed to the outlet that his son died from liver failure. Medas' former "Floribama Shore" castmate, Aimee Hall, shared a photo of her friend in the ICU with a message about his health on May 1. "Our friend Kirk has been in the ICU for over two weeks now, battling a severe case of necrotizing pancreatitis. He's currently on a ventilator, and the situation is incredibly serious. Nilsa [Prowant] has been flying back and forth to Miami to be by his side, and I've been lucky enough to stay connected through FaceTime with his roommates and close friends who've been keeping us updated daily," her caption began. Hall explained that Medas didn't have medical insurance and his mother started a GoFundMe account. She then pleaded to fans for their support. "If you're able to give, thank you from the bottom of our hearts. And if you can't, your prayers mean just as much," Hall wrote. "Please pray for Kirk. Pray for his mother. Pray for his friends. And pray for his castmates—we're all hurting watching our brother fight this battle. Thank you for your love and support," her caption concluded. Medas was a beloved member of the MTV show and was seen in 25 episodes between 2017 and 2020. Krik's other co-star, Nilsa Prowant, shared a message for her friend prior to his death. Prowant shared a video of the pair dancing on Instagram to Lorde's "Ribs" with a lengthy caption about his recovery. "Thank you all so much for the overwhelming love, prayers, donations, messages, and support for Kirk. He's been in the ICU on a ventilator for two weeks now, fighting necrotizing pancreatitis and sepsis. "Watching someone you love go through something so painful and uncertain is heartbreaking, but your messages, prayers, and kind words have truly lifted us in this dark time. His mama is so grateful for every single one of i know Kirk will be too. Please keep praying for him…he's strong, and we're believing in healing, recovery, and a miracle. One day at a time," she concluded.
