Chicago's bloody Memorial Day weekend leaves 22 shot, 2 dead: report

Chicago was plagued by violence over Memorial Day weekend when 22 people were shot, including two fatally, ABC7 reported. One fatal shooting reportedly occurred when an argument erupted inside a vehicle on the city's Northwest Side in the Logan Square neighborhood on Saturday afternoon. The 35-year-old victim was attempting to exit the vehicle when he was shot and killed by someone else inside the vehicle. The shooter then fled the scene and remains at large. A 46-year-old man on the Northwest Side was shot in the head while inside his vehicle near Humboldt Park. The vehicle then crashed into another car and a pole. The victim was transported to the hospital and later pronounced dead. The suspect in that shooting also remains at large. Feds trumpet Chicago mass shooting arrests; but suspects haven't been charged in shooting

CHICAGO (WGN) — The press release's headline was clear: 'ICE Chicago captures shooters in December 2024 mass shooting tied to Tren de Aragua gang.' It gathered local and national media coverage. However, WGN Investigates has found no record the two men named by Homeland Security have actually been charged in the shooting. Instead, they're currently being detained by federal authorities on immigration charges. It's possible Chicago police issued an alert to other law enforcement about their interest in Venezuelan nationals Ricardo Granadillo Padilla and Edward Martinez Carmeno. A source confirmed both are considered 'persons of interest' in the mass shooting. A CPD spokesperson declined to comment but confirmed neither man has been charged locally and police consider the case open. Typically, law enforcement agencies don't publicly accuse people of committing crimes before they're actually charged with the offense. A Homeland Security spokesperson wouldn't provide comment beyond saying 'it's ongoing.' Three people were killed – and a total of 8 were shot – at a house in Chicago's Gage Park neighborhood where police had also responded to previous disturbances. Previous Coverage: Gage Park shooting: 2 victims identified in Monday's mass shooting that left 3 dead, 5 wounded 'I believe they're Venezuelan and maybe they've been here for a year,' one nearby resident told WGN News after the shooting. The May 20th press release from ICE announced 'the arrests of the shooters involved in the Dec. 2, 2024 mass shooting at a house party in Chicago predominantly attended by Venezuelan nationals.' It went on to say the shooting was 'perpetrated by members of the Tren de Aragua gang.' ICE published post-arrest photos of Padilla and Carmeno on its website along with an image of nine high powered weapons, ammunition and drugs agents say were recovered. The press release also included a blurred image of nearly a dozen other people sitting on a curb in Raleigh, NC who ICE labeled as 'suspected TdA members encountered during Padilla's arrest.' Padilla was arrested on February 8 by ICE Homeland Security Investigations and was sentenced in March for illegally entering the United States in 2022. ICE said multiple firearms, high-capacity magazines, drugs and fraudulent documents were found during a raid of his Chicago home before his arrest in North Carolina. WGN Investigates: Investigating public corruption, crime & fraud Cermeno was arrested on January 26 by ICE in Schaumburg and then released by a federal magistrate judge before agents re-arrested him on criminal charges for illegally entering the United States in 2023, according to the press release. While state and local laws prohibit Chicago police from participating in immigration enforcement they do partner with federal agencies on criminal cases and CPD routinely works with federal task force partners to locate people they view as suspects. Two sources say local authorities were surprised Homeland Security would trumpet the arrests of the men before charges are ready to be filed. It's symbolic of a strategy by the Trump Administration to promote high-profile arrests on social media and among friendly news outlets while refusing to provide information that was routinely released in the past. Homeland Security is now being sued by several groups for allegedly violating federal transparency laws by refusing to release basic information about their arrest and deportation efforts in Chicago and elsewhere, Block Club Chicago reports. ICE has not responded to a Freedom of Information Act request filed by WGN Investigates in March seeking information about the number of people arrested in Chicago, whether they were deported and how many had criminal backgrounds. Two illegal Venezuelan immigrants, suspected TdA gang members charged in deadly Chicago mass shooting

Two Venezuelans living in the U.S. illegally were recently charged in a December mass shooting that killed three people and wounded five others in Chicago, leading to the arrests of more than a dozen suspected Tren de Aragua gang members. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced on Tuesday that suspected shooters Ricardo Granadillo Padilla, 25, and Edward Martinez Cermeno, 24, are being charged in the Dec. 2 house party massacre. Eight people were shot, including five men and three women between the ages of 20 and 35, according to a report from affiliate FOX 32 Chicago. Victims suffered gunshot wounds to the head, abdomen and extremities, according to the report. Three men were pronounced dead, including a 26-year-old and a 28-year-old. Gang-related graffiti was found at the scene, and officials confirmed prior calls for service at the address, FOX 32 reported. Padilla was arrested in Raleigh, North Carolina, on Feb. 8 in a multi-agency effort, and was sentenced in March for illegally entering the country in 2022 near El Paso, Texas, according to ICE. Multiple guns, high-capacity magazines, narcotics and fraudulent documents were seized in January from his home in Chicago. During his arrest a month later, a pistol, ammunition and other evidence were seized, according to authorities. Cermeno was arrested in Schaumburg, Illinois on Jan. 26 by ICE Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Chicago and border patrol agents, but officials said he was later released by a federal magistrate judge after a federal detention hearing. He was arrested again by ICE HSI Chicago on administrative immigration charges for illegally entering the country in 2023 near Eagle Pass, Texas. Padilla and Cermeno remain in federal custody, according to ICE. Within the last few weeks, 16 additional TdA members and associates of Padilla and Cermeno in the Chicago and Raleigh areas were arrested by ICE HSI Chicago on immigration charges. ICE did not immediately respond to further inquiries from Fox News Digital.

2 men with alleged ties to Venezuelan gang Tres de Aragua arrested for Chicago Lawn mass shooting, ICE says

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said they arrested two Venezuelan nationals with ties to the Tres de Aragua gang in connection with a Chicago mass shooting in December. Three people were killed and five more were injured in the shooting at birthday party at a home in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood on Dec. 2, 2024. Police were called to the scene in the 3500-block of West 59th Street around 2:10 pm., where they found four men and four women between the ages of 20 and 35 with gunshot wounds. Three of the four men were killed. They were identified as 28-year-old Jon Carlos Blancarcer, 26-year-old Hector Sajo, and 32-year-old Osmer Angel Ferrer Oria. Edward Martinez Cermeno, 24, was arrested on Jan. 26 in Schaumburg and initially released following a federal detention hearing, the agency said. He was then arrested again by ICE agents in Chicago on administrative charges for being in the U.S. illegally. He is in federal custody facing criminal charges for allegedly illegally entering the U.S. near Eagle Pass, Texas, in 2023. ICE said they arrested Ricardo Granadillo Padilla, 25, on Feb. 8 in Raleigh, North Carolina. ICE said in January they seized multiple guns, high-capacity magazines, narcotics and fraudulent documents from his Chicago residence, and when he was arrested in Raleigh they seized a pistol and ammunition. Padilla remains in federal custody and was sentenced in March for illegally entering the U.S. near El Paso in 2022.
