Tributes have been paid to a former councillor who was killed on a road he had campaigned to make Michael Duggan, 81, died in hospital after a collision between his car and a skip lorry on Friday morning on a section of the A19 he had previously highlighted as being Stephanie Duckett described Mr Duggan as a "fantastic" man who was "very passionate" about the village of Riccall, between Selby and said: "He was very much Mr Riccall, anything he could do he would for that village. "John was one of those people who once you met him, you didn't forget him. When he walked into a room everybody knew straight away he was there."He was a brilliant man and loyal friend."Mr Duggan was joining the A19 northbound at Riccall from the York Road junction when his Nissan Juke collided with a driver, a 42-year-old man from York, was arrested at the scene and was assisting officers with enquiries, according to North Yorkshire a parish councillor for Riccall, Mr Duggan had petitioned for changes to the layout of the A19 through the village as far back as 2007 and had called for a roundabout to be told the York Press newspaper in August that year that a junction on the road had been the site of numerous accidents and two said: "The stretch of the A19 that runs past Riccall is one of the fastest sections of the road, and the speed of traffic using this section is totally unacceptable to local people who are trying to enter and exit the village."Ms Duckett said, despite his death occurring on the next junction along to the one Mr Duggan had raised concerns about in the past, the road remained a concern."That road is tremendously busy and every year traffic just seems to multiply," she said."At one point there was money for the roundabout and it was never built and the cost now is just in the millions to do the same project."I honestly don't think it's every going to get done."Mr Duggan was elected to the Riccall ward of Selby Council with the Labour party in 2022 he stood for Camblesforth and Carlton in the North Yorkshire Council local election but lost to Conservative councillor Mike Jordan. A19 crash victim named as 'crusading' councillor John Duggan who fought for road safety

A "crusading" former councillor in North Yorkshire has died in a car crash at a junction that he campaigned for as needing safety improvements. Ex district and county councillor John Michael Duggan died in a crash on the A19 just metres from his house in Riccall on Friday, August 1. His Nissan Juke was joining the A19 from York Road before crashing with a skip lorry. Mr Duggan was rushed to Leeds General Infirmary by air ambulance but was pronounced dead a short time later. North Yorkshire Police confirmed a 42-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the crash. He is assisting officers with their investigations. Meanwhile, news of Mr Duggan's tragic death has prompted tributes to flood in. She said: "He was a larger-than-life character, and as soon as he heard I was also from Riccall, that was it." In a Facebook post by his relative, they said that Mr Duggan had campaigned to improve safety at the junction where the crash happened. Campaigning was a huge part of his role as a councillor. Cllr Duckett described him as a "crusading councillor" who campaigned ferociously for the people of Riccall. "He just loved Riccall," she added. "He was absolutely fantastic at working hard for his residents. "He was a big union man, and he worked hard to improve working conditions for everybody. He got on with absolutely everybody." Cllr Duckett also said John was a big family man, adding: "He absolutely adored Katie, his wife, and his daughters. They were always out walking together, keeping fit together. He was a crusading local councillor. He was a union man, but also a quiet family man, and he was devoted to his girls." A skip lorry driver has been arrested after a man died in a collision in a services were called at about 10:30 BST on Friday to reports of a collision between a DAF vehicle and a black Nissan Juke on the A19 in Riccall, between Selby and driver of the Juke has been named as John Michael Duggan, 81, from Riccall. He died in Yorkshire Police said that the skip lorry driver, a 42-year-old man from York, was arrested at the scene and was assisting officers with enquiries.
