Ghaziabad cop dies as stray dog comes in front of bike, car runs over her
A late-night ride on her motorcycle to home after work turned fatal for a 25-year-old sub-inspector in Ghaziabad — she fell on the road after she lost her balance as a stray dog came in her way, and a car then ran over her, said officers. It was around 1 am on Monday that Richa Sachan headed to her rented accommodation in Mahindra Enclave after she wrapped up work at the Kavinagar police station. Police said a stray dog suddenly came in front of her Bullet near an intersection. Sachan lost control of her vehicle, in an attempt to avoid the stray, lost balance and then fell on the road. A car, which was right behind her, allegedly ran into her, inflicting severe head injuries. She was rushed to Sarvodaya Hospital, where doctors declared her dead on arrival, said police. Amid nationwide protests over the Supreme Court's August 11 directive to remove stray dogs from the streets of Delhi-NCR and to rehabilitate them in shelters, the death of a young sub-inspector has reignited concerns over the rising number of road accidents linked to strays. Residents and commuters have repeatedly flagged risks posed by packs of dogs near intersections and residential colonies, apart from rabies cases related to dog bites. Sachan, who cleared her police force exam in 2023 was a resident of a village in Uttar Pradesh's Kanpur. ACP (Kavinagar) Swatantra Kumar Singh said, 'She was extremely hardworking, had recently completed her police training, and was well-liked by her colleagues. It is a huge loss to lose an officer so young.' He added that a case has been registered, the post-mortem has been conducted, and the body was handed over to her family with state honours. Sachan was the youngest of five siblings. Her brother, Vikas, said she had aspired to join the police since childhood. 'She visited us two months ago. We never thought it would be the last time we would see her,' he said.
