Dalton Park Outlet boosts sustainability credentials with new on-site initiatives

The North East's Dalton Park Outlet shopping destination has bolstered its sustainability credentials with three travel-related initiatives to promote 'greener, low-impact living'. Partnering with Durham County Council as part of its Towns & Villages transformation programme, first off there's a new covered bike storage unit, which includes a repair station and space for 10 bikes and four cargo cycles. It also comes with an integrated Streetpod technology system, which claims the highest police rating for security, 'providing better quality, enhanced cycle storage'. It's part of a 'Green Travel Plan' to encourage visitors to travel to the centre 'in a more cost-effective and eco-friendly way'. The outlet has also secured funding for a solar-powered e-bike charger, which means Dalton Park will be the only e-bike charger in a retail destination along the NCN1 cycle route, the UK's first completely carbon-neutral active travel network. The centre's also installed two water bottle refill stations to encourage customers to use reusable water bottles while on-site, mitigating the need for single-use plastic that contributes to pollution and landfill waste. Dalton Park Outlet marketing manager Matt McWhinnie believes this initiative will 'attract more cycling tourists in an ever-growing bike tourism market and will help to increase dwell time at the centre as visitors take a moment to shop while they recharge their bikes'. Centre manager Richard Kaye added: 'There is always more to do but we strongly believe we're in a good place to drive this forward and continually look at ways we can make more of a positive impact on the local and wider community.'

SoftBank's $100 Billion AI Gamble Hits Major Snag -- Will Stargate Ever Launch?

SoftBank (SFTBY) has hit a snag in its ambitious $100 billion AI infrastructure push in the US as tariff risks and economic volatility weigh on financing talks. Despite initial promises to deploy capital quickly, the Stargate project remains stuck in the planning phase, with lenders and asset managers holding back as concerns mount over rising costs and data center overcapacity. TD Cowen analysts warn that tariffs on AI hardware could drive up build costs by 5% to 15%, further complicating the financing landscape for SoftBank as it seeks backing from major players like JPMorgan and Apollo Global Management. Warning! GuruFocus has detected 10 Warning Signs with SFTBY. Adding to the uncertainty, Chinese AI startup DeepSeek is undercutting established players with cheaper AI models, casting doubts over the long-term profitability of Stargate's proposed data center network. Meanwhile, Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ:MSFT) and Amazon Web Services (NASDAQ:AMZN) are both scaling back data center projects amid signs of slower AI-driven demand growth. For SoftBank, the stakes are high the firm is betting on a 15% to 20% return on a $50 billion investment over five to six years, according to Richard Kaye at Comgest Asset Management. But with financing talks dragging and market conditions shaky, the timeline is becoming increasingly uncertain. Still, SoftBank's Masayoshi Son remains undeterred, ramping up internal resources to accelerate Stargate's rollout despite the delays. The firm has mobilized a 20-30 person team within its Vision Fund, led by Vikas J. Parekh, to expedite the project and secure capital on a deal-by-deal basis. Meanwhile, OpenAI is moving ahead with its flagship data center in Abilene, Texas, developed by Oracle Corp. (NYSE:ORCL), which CEO Sam Altman recently touted as the largest AI training facility in the world. But for investors, the question remains: Can SoftBank navigate the economic headwinds and deliver the returns it promised or will Stargate become another high-profile tech bet that fails to launch?
