Ex-New York Giants WR Richie James announces retirement from NFL
Former New York Giants wide receiver Richie James Jr. has officially announced his retirement from the NFL after six seasons.
"It took time, but I have come to realize I am retired from the NFL. 7th round out of MTSU. I feel like I was just a ball player to last that long," James wrote on X."Unfortunately, my knee never healed properly. I was playing hurt since '22. Oh well. I gave everything I got to the game of football."
James was originally a seventh-round pick of the San Francisco 49ers in the 2018 NFL draft. After three-plus seasons in the Bay, he signed with the Giants in 2022 and wrapped up his career with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2023, picking up a Super Bowl ring along the way.
Despite suffering a knee injury in 2021, James put up career-best numbers in his lone season with the Giants. He recorded 57 receptions for 569 yards and four touchdowns. He also gained six yards on two carries, and returned 24 punts for 174 yards.
In the Giants' two playoff games that year, James caught 11 passes for 82 yards and five first downs, and returned three punts for 14 yards.
Once a Giant, Always a Giant.
