GOV. FERGUSON SIGNS TEAMSTERS-BACKED BILL SECURING UI BENEFITS FOR STRIKING WORKERS
OLYMPIA, Wash., May 20, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Teamsters-backed legislation that will extend unemployment insurance (UI) to workers on strike has been signed into law by Governor Bob Ferguson. "This is a major victory. This law will ensure striking workers don't have to choose between fighting for their rights and feeding their families," said Rick Hicks, President of Teamsters Joint Council 28. "Strikes are always a last resort, and employers cause them by demanding unreasonable concessions from workers. This law protects not just union members, but the entire bargaining process." With the passage of SB 5041, Washington has joined New York and New Jersey to become the third state in the nation to extend unemployment insurance to striking workers. "We're leveling the playing field and giving workers the strength to fight for fair contracts even if they get forced to the picket line by their employers," said Paul Dascher, Secretary-Treasurer of Teamsters Local 117. "This bill happened because Teamsters came together and demonstrated the same strength and solidarity in the halls of the state house that we demonstrate on the picket lines. Washington State is leading the way in protecting and enhancing workers' rights, and Teamsters are making that happen." Teamsters Joint Council 28 represents workers in a wide variety of industries throughout Washington, Alaska, and the Idaho Panhandle. ‘NO STRIKE': SEA Airport aircraft fuelers reach agreement with employer
150 aircraft fuelers at SEA Airport were poised to walk off the job after teamsters voted unanimously Tuesday to authorize a strike. But by Friday, the Teamsters and employer Swissport had reached an agreement and averted any strike. According to Jamie Fleming, a union leader with Teamsters Local 174, the 'nonstop marathon of negotiations' on Thursday and Friday included members of Swissport's highest levels of management, some of whom flew across the Atlantic Ocean to participate in the bargaining. 'After the unanimous strike vote on Tuesday, we told Swissport they needed to return to negotiations with a renewed sense of urgency to reaching a deal or they would be on strike,' said Teamsters Local 174 Secretary-Treasurer Rick Hicks. 'We are pleased to announce that they did exactly that, bringing in managers with decision-making power and industry knowledge that allowed us to work together to reach a deal we know our members will be proud to ratify. I applaud management's commitment to investing in our members, and our attention will now focus on the consortium of major airlines at SeaTac, as well as the Port of Seattle management, to provide the funds necessary for a living wage in the Seattle market. We welcome any local politicians who are willing to assist in this endeavor.' Members will vote on the 'fully-recommended' offer next Tuesday. KIRO 7 has reached out to Swissport for comment on the agreement.

TEAMSTERS AT SEATAC AIRPORT AUTHORIZE STRIKE
150 Air Fuelers Vote to Strike as Swissport's Greed Threatens Travel Disruptions SEATTLE, May 6, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — More than 150 air fuelers at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) have voted overwhelmingly to authorize a strike against Swissport, a commercial aviation services company. The workers, represented by Teamsters Local 174, took the vote after Swissport repeatedly refused to bargain in good faith. A strike could bring air travel through SEA to a standstill. 'Swissport's greed has forced our members to take action,' said Rick Hicks, Secretary-Treasurer of Local 174 and Teamsters Western Region International Vice President. 'Our members perform dangerous, physically demanding work, and Swissport's success was built on their backs. No one wants to walk off the job, but this company has a duty to its workers and the flying public to negotiate in good faith.' Swissport is the largest provider of airport ground services in the world and reported nearly $4.2 billion in revenue last year. A strike by air fuelers at SEA would directly impact operations for major airlines, including American, Alaska, Delta, United, JetBlue, and others. 'This is a highly skilled, high-risk job, and all we're asking for is fair pay and good benefits,' said Parsu Ghimirey, an air fueler and Local 174 shop steward. 'Swissport can more than afford what we're asking. If we end up striking, it'll be because of management's greed — plain and simple.' Contract talks have dragged on for more than two months, with Swissport refusing to make a fair, reasonable offer. Now that Teamsters have authorized a strike, Local 174 can call a strike at any time.
