49ers Ricky Pearsall Taking Deebo's Number
The San Francisco 49ers traded away long-time star wide receiver Deebo Samuel to the Washington Commanders in exchange for a fifth-round pick back in March. As a result, the team will need some other guys to step up. Advertisement One of the most likely candidates to have a larger role is sophomore wideout Ricky Pearsall. In what could be taken as a sign that he is out to prove that he is coming ready to play in 2025, the 24-year-old Niner will be changing his jersey number from No. 14 to No. 1. The most notable part about this move is the fact that No. 1 was the number on the back of Samuel's jersey in his final season with the 49ers in 2024, after being No. 19 for five seasons. Pearsall wore No. 1 in his time in college at Florida, which is one of the main reasons why he jumped at the opportunity to take the number as soon as Samuel left. The former Gator started in just four games for San Francisco in his rookie season, but he impressed in the snaps he was given. He racked up 400 yards and three touchdowns after he returned from a gunshot wound injury he sustained during an attempted robbery. Advertisement Pearsall still appeared in 11 games in 2024 for the Niners, but it obviously took him a while to get going, as one would expect after being shot. The 49ers had a disappointing season in 2024, finishing dead last in the NFC West with a 6-11 record. Pearsall will be looking to step up in his sophomore season and help the team get back to their winning ways. Now, heading into his second season, Pearsall is ready to step up in a big way and he's starting with a fresh look. By switching from No. 14 to No. 1, Pearsall is not just changing his jersey number but signaling his commitment to becoming a key player in the 49ers' offense. Here's what the jersey change means for Pearsall and the team as he looks to make his mark in 2025. Why Ricky Pearsall's new No. 1 Jersey is more than just a number Ricky Pearsall Florida Highlights | No. 31 Overall to 49ers | CBS Sports Pearsall's decision to switch to No. 1 isn't just a cosmetic change; it's a statement of intent. The number, now free after Deebo Samuel's trade to the Commanders, holds significance for Pearsall, who wore it during his standout college career at Florida. With his rookie season behind him, Pearsall is entering Year 2 with higher expectations both from himself and from the 49ers' coaching staff. Despite a rocky start to his NFL journey, including a recovery from a gunshot wound before the season even began, Pearsall proved he has what it takes. With 31 receptions, 400 yards, and three touchdowns in 11 games, Pearsall showed flashes of his potential. Now, as he steps into a larger role, the No. 1 jersey represents a clean slate and a chance to elevate his game. Pearsall's confidence being the key to 49ers' 2025 offensive success Offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak recently shared that Pearsall sees himself as a starting receiver, and that self-confidence is exactly what the 49ers need. With several key players leaving the team this offseason, Pearsall could play a pivotal role in the passing game, especially with quarterback Brock Purdy looking for new weapons to rely on. Pearsall changes 49ers jersey number ahead of 2025 NFL season
Pearsall changes 49ers jersey number ahead of 2025 NFL season originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area In time, Ricky Pearsall will get a chance to prove he is a No. 1 wide receiver. In the meantime, as he enters his second season in the NFL, Pearsall is indisputably No. 1. Advertisement Pearsall has changed his jersey number this offseason to No. 1, which was shown on a video the 49ers posted Tuesday on social media. While the 49ers still list Pearsall as No. 14 on their official website, the team confirmed Pearsall has made the change. Pearsall wore No. 1 during his two seasons at the University of Florida in 2022 and 2023 before the 49ers selected him in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft with the No. 31 overall selection. In his first three seasons of college football, Pearsall wore No. 19 at Arizona State. Last year, Deebo Samuel wore No. 1 with the 49ers. He made the switch from No. 19 after safety Jimmie Ward signed with the Houston Texans as a free agent following the 2022 NFL season. Advertisement The 49ers traded Samuel to the Washington Commanders this offseason, opening the door for Pearsall to switch to his college number. Pearsall becomes the sixth player in 49ers history to wear No. 1. As a rookie, Pearsall caught 31 passes for 400 yards and three touchdowns. Pearsall missed the first six games after he was the victim of a shooting during a robbery attempt just a week before the start of the regular season. Pearsall was shot through the chest but was released from the hospital after less than 24 hours. He made a full recovery and started four of the 11 games in which he appeared. Pearsall could open the season as a starter alongside veteran Jauan Jennings, who caught a career-best 77 passes for 975 yards and six touchdowns in 2024. Five Gators projected to go in 2025 NFL draft by CBS Sports
Five Gators projected to go in 2025 NFL draft by CBS Sports The 2025 NFL draft begins in less than two weeks, and a handful of Gators expect to hear their name called over the three-day event. CBS Sports analyst Chris Trapasso released a full seven-round mock draft on Wednesday and has five Gators going on Day 3 of the draft. While five draftees would exceed last year's total of one — Ricky Pearsall at No. 31 in the first round — it would mark the first time Florida didn't produce a Day 1 or 2 pick since 2012, when Jaye Howard went in the fourth and Chris Rainey followed in the fifth. Trapasso sees receiver Elijhah Badger coming off the board first for the Gators in the fourth round to the Carolina Panthers. Defensive tackle Cam Jackson is a projected fifth-round pick to the San Francisco 49ers, joining Ricky Pearsall, and Trapasso sees the Tampa Bay Buccaneers trading up to get linebacker Shemar James in the sixth. James had eligibility left but opted to enter the draft instead of returning for his senior year. Florida's linebacker room is a bit crowded with young talent, but James would still have been the leader of that position room and received plenty of playing time. Rounding out the draft projections are offensive tackle Brandon Crenshaw-Dickson and cornerback Jason Marshall Jr., both going in the seventh and final round. Marshall played like a potential Day 2 guy for most of the season, but a season-ending injury killed his draft stock. The two surprising omissions out of Florida not on Trapasso's list are receiver Chimere Dike and running back Montrell Johnson Jr. Dike was a draft combine darling that wowed scouts and drew rave reviews, while Johnson has been a reliable back for four seasons under Billy Napier. Similar to Marshall, Johnson dealt with some injuries as a senior, but he's still a reliable back who flashed better speed at the combine than many expected. It wouldn't be surprising to see both sneak into the later rounds, despite Trapasso's projections. Gators draft projections from CBS Sports Round 4, Pick 114 (Carolina via Chicago): WR Elijhah Badger Round 5, Pick 147 (San Francisco via New Orleans): DT Cam Jackson Round 6, Pick 185 (Tampa Bay vis mock trade with Pittsburgh): LB Shemar James Round 7, Pick 218 (Atlanta via Cleveland): OT Brandon Crenshaw-Dickson Round 7, Pick 225 (Arizona via NYJ): CB Jason Marshall Follow us @GatorsWire on X, formerly known as Twitter, as well as Bluesky, and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Florida Gators news, notes and opinions.

Meta AI shares its 49ers first-round NFL draft pick
Meta AI shares its 49ers first-round NFL draft pick The 2025 NFL draft is now less than three weeks away. San Francisco owns the No. 11 overall pick and 11 selections in total, including four picks within the top 100. Though it's been a quiet offseason in the way of free agency acquisitions, the 49ers can make it a successful offseason by getting their draft selections right. There's all sorts of thoughts on which direction the 49ers will go with their first-round selection. As NFL draft analysts are working to put their final mock drafts together, USA TODAY Sports turned to Meta AI to forecast how the 2025 NFL draft will unfold. Meta AI surprisingly omitted Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders and Penn State tight end Tyler Warren from its first-round mock. But, Meta AI mocked an exciting selection by the 49ers at pick No. 11. According to Meta AI's mock draft, the 49ers will select Arizona wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan. Meta is a fan of McMillan's "huge wingspan" and his ability to generate yards after the catch. That would make him a nice long-term partner for San Francisco's 2024 first-round pick Ricky Pearsall. It would also further open the door for an eventual Brandon Aiyuk trade, though it seems likely the veteran will play for the 49ers in 2025 as he recovers from tearing his ACL and MCL last season. - Jacob Camenker, USA TODAY Sports. The 49ers could certainly use some wide receiver help after dealing away Deebo Samuel this offseason to Washington. McMillan reeled in 84 grabs for 1,319 yards for eight touchdowns. In his three seasons with Arizona, McMillan caught 213 passes for 3,423 yards with 26 touchdowns. The 6-foot-4 wide receiver would join a group of wide receivers that includes Jauan Jennings, Ricky Pearsall and Brandon Aiyuk. Jennings caught 77 passes for 975 yards with six scores, while Pearsall finished with 31 catches for 400 yards and three scores. Aiyuk finished with 25 catches for 374 yards in his injury-shortened season, but he totaled 1,342 receiving yards and seven touchdowns in 2023.
