Plea to implement Right to Public Services Act rejected
1 2 Madurai: Madras high court has denied relief to a man seeking to implement Right to Public Services Act in Tamil Nadu to ensure that people could avail of various services rendered by the govt in a time-bound manner. The court was hearing a public interest litigation filed in 2020 by K Gurunathan in this regard. He said while Rajasthan, Kerala and Gujarat passed the act, it wasn't passed by the Tamil Nadu govt. The state submitted that according to a GO dated June 4, 2025, grievance petitions submitted by citizens would be disposed of within 30 days. Therefore, if the petitioner submitted any petition, it would be considered and decided by the authorities concerned within this time limit. A division bench of Justice S M Subramaniam and Justice G Arul Murugan observed that the general prayer sought in the petition could not be granted. If the petitioner had any grievances, he could submit an application to the authority concerned for their redressal, the judges observed and disposed of the petition. Plea to implement Right to Public Services Act disposed of
The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court disposed of a public interest litigation petition that sought a direction to the State to implement the Right to Public Services Act in Tamil Nadu to ensure efficient and time bound delivery of public services. The court was hearing the petition filed in 2021 by K. Gurunathan. The petitioner had sought a direction to the State government to implement the Right to Public Services Act in Tamil Nadu to reduce corruption, increase transparency and public accountability. The petitioner submitted that the Right to Public Services Act had been passed in Rajasthan, Kerala and Gujarat. However, no such Act has been passed in Tamil Nadu. The State submitted that as per a G.O. issued in 2025 by the Human Resources Management Department, the grievance petitions submitted by the people will be disposed of in 30 days. In the event of submitting any petition, it will be considered and decided by the authorities concerned within the time limit as prescribed in the G.O., it was submitted. A Division Bench of Justices S.M. Subramaniam and G. Arul Murugan took into account the submission made by the State. The court disposed of the petition.
