Rio Rancho mayor announces GOP gubernatorial run
Gregg Hull, as pictured on his campaign website (Courtesy Greg Hull) Rio Rancho Mayor Greggory Hull on Tuesday announced he will run in the June 2026 Republican primary for New Mexico governor. In a news release, Hull said he would make his official announcement on June 2, exactly one year prior to election day. Hull has served as mayor of Rio Rancho since winning a run-off election in April, 2014. He was elected to his third four-year term in March 2022. On his campaign website, Hull lists crime, jobs, education and infrastructure as top 'issues' in his campaign. Regarding crime, his website says that the Rio Rancho Police budget 'has more than doubled' during Hull's tenure as mayor 'and the city has been consistently ranked one of the safest cities in New Mexico.' The Rio Rancho Observer earlier this year noted an increase in homicides in 2024 in Rio Rancho, but also made Livability's list of the top 25 best places to live in the Southwest. Regarding crime, which has been a focal point for Democratic Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham — who is term-limited from running again — Hull says his priorities will include: increasing police presence throughout the state; enhancing border security to 'end the fentanyl crisis'; and establishing a 'zero-tolerance policy for all violent crimes and crimes against children.' He is the first Republican to announce a gubernatorial run in 2026, and prompted a swift response from state Democratic Party spokesperson Daniel Garcia: 'Under Democratic leadership, New Mexico has been a national leader in protecting abortion rights and reproductive healthcare, transitioning to a clean energy economy, early childhood education, and much more,' Garcia said in a statement. 'New Mexicans can't risk reversing our progress in so many key areas by having a Republican Trump lackey as the top executive in our state. It has taken years to recover from the profoundly negative effect New Mexico's last Republican governor had on our state.' So far, the Democratic primary for governor has two official candidates: Former Interior Secretary and Congresswoman Deb Haaland and Bernalillo County DA Sam Bregman. According to their most recent campaign finance reports, Hull has raised just shy of $200,000; Bregman has raised approximately $632,000 and Haaland has raised more than $2.8 million.
