Kristofer Martin, most recently worked for Santa Ana Police Department, but is a former Rio Rancho Police Officer. During the stop, Martin told police he's sorry and that he isn't well. 'I'm supposed to be the guy who has his s*** together,' said Kristofer Martin, 'I'm just in a bad place man.' Rio Rancho Police pulled over the 47-year-old Martin after they got a call about a domestic disturbance from his ex-wife. Police records said Martin got violent with his son. Officers pointed out that Martin has scratches around his neck area and that he smells of alcohol. Martin admitted to drinking but says he never broke any other laws. When asked to perform a sobriety test, Martin was seen struggling to walk in a straight line and saying the alphabet. When the officer told Martin he should be able to pass the test because he's a police officer, Martin disagreed. Police then told Martin that he failed the tests and would have to be arrested. The officer could be heard telling Martin to put his hands behind his back. Martin then said, 'You don't have to cuff me…You guys are going to end my f***ing, you guys are going to end my career. My kids are going to suffer for this.' Martin has since been released from jail pending trial. Martin is also facing a battery charge for the incident with his son. KRQE News 13 reached out to Santa Ana Police to find out whether Martin is still employed, but we are waiting to hear back. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. State police officer accused of crashing into road signs while under the influence

May 5—A New Mexico State Police officer was allegedly under the influence of pain medicine when he was in two crashes in Rio Rancho on Friday. Hugo Diaz Amaya, 33, of Rio Rancho, is charged with driving while under the influence of drugs, first offense, two counts of reckless driving and failure to give immediate notice of accidents. He was released on personal recognizance, according to court records. Diaz Amaya's arrest is the second involving a police officer in two days. Albuquerque Police Officer Jonathan Franco was arrested at a DWI checkpoint on Saturday night. Diaz Amaya was placed on administrative leave and "appropriate disciplinary action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation," NMSP Chief Troy Weisler said in a statement. "I want to make it clear no one is above the law, especially those of us who have sworn to uphold it," Weisler said. "While my officers are human, and make mistakes, they are also held to a higher standard because of the trust placed in them by the community." At 3:08 p.m. Friday, the Rio Rancho Police Department responded to a call for an agency assist. When officers arrived, they found a crashed truck at the intersection of Enchanted Hills NE and Jaeger NE, according to a statement of probable cause filed in Sandoval County Magistrate Court. Officers learned Diaz Amaya was involved in two crashes, police said. The first took place on U.S. 550 between N.M. 528 and Santa Ana Star Casino, where he drove onto oncoming traffic forcing another vehicle to swerve off the road, according to the statement of probable cause. The second crash happened near New Mexico Bank and Trust in the 7800 block of Enchanted Hills, near N.M. 528, where he hit road signs and multiple curbs, police said. Diaz Amaya told officers he crashed near the casino and did not stop because he did not have insurance; however, he denied crashing near the bank, the probable cause states. Police said Diaz Amaya had bloodshot eyes, slurred speech and almost fell over while walking. He told police he took medicine for back pain Thursday night, according to the statement of probable cause. Diaz Amaya then failed the standard field sobriety test, police said. "I recognize that incidents like this can damage public confidence, and I will continue to stay committed to holding all my officers accountable for their actions," Weisler said. "His conduct does not reflect the values and integrity that define a New Mexico State Police officer. Those who tarnish this badge have no place in this agency."

Albuquerque police say driver ran stop sign before being struck by officer

Feb. 11—The Albuquerque Police Department said a 25-year-old driver who was T-boned by an officer responding to a call on Monday is expected to survive his injuries. APD spokesman Gilbert Gallegos said the man, who was initially described as a teenager, is "being monitored for internal bleeding, but is expected to make a full recovery." The officer involved in the collision was treated for minor injuries. The crash occurred around 6:40 p.m. on Snow Vista SW, south of Sage. Surveillance video showed the driver of the Toyota Camry "ran a stop sign, crossed at least one lane of traffic and pulled into the path of the officer" before the crash, Gallegos said. At the time, the officer was headed in the direction of an unrelated crash at 98th and Interstate 40. "The call had just come out, and he was going to respond, but this crash happened in an instant. He did not have emergency equipment activated," Gallegos said. Video showed the officer was "driving with the flow of traffic" and didn't appear to be speeding at the time. Due to the seriousness of the driver's injuries, APD's fatal crash detectives are investigating, with the Rio Rancho Police Department assisting.
