Kelly Ripa, Mark Consuelos speak with David Muir about rooting for the underdogs as new Italian soccer team owners

Known for their hit morning show, "LIVE with Kelly and Mark," Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos are now sharing a new side of themselves with their audience. In an interview with ABC's "World News Tonight" anchor David Muir, ahead of a new ESPN docuseries about their journey of becoming Italian soccer team owners, the couple travels to Italy, back to where Consuelos spent most of his childhood, to help lift a town and their underdog soccer team that had been largely forgotten. The couple, who purchased part of Campobasso FC, a historic Italian soccer club formed in 1919, told Muir how their underdog story resonated with the team's passionate fanbase in southern Italy. "This project is particularly special to me," said Consuelos, who spent the first seven years of his youth in Italy. The couple's involvement came at a crucial time for Campobasso, located in a lesser-known region of Italy. "This town in this little-known region of Italy.. was in danger of losing their football club that they've had over 100 years," Consuelos explained. He credited his Italian mother for his love of the game, recalling her emotional reaction when Italy won the World Cup in 1982. Consuelos said owning part of the team has strengthened his bond with his mother, who now provides post-match critiques and discussions."She's actually very good; she should be in team management," Ripa joked. Their presence made an immediate impact on the community. Local residents, from elderly women waving from balconies to children wearing team jerseys, embraced the American owners who believed in their team's potential. "People have been fans for 40, 50 years, come up to you and say thank you," Consuelos said. "And then conversely, see the little kids who are just now wearing the jerseys and having something to root for - it's not work. It is an honor." Ripa emphasized their commitment to success: "We really want to win for them. Obviously, we want to win, but we really want to win for the town." The couple's journey with Campobasso FC is documented in "Running with the Wolves," a four-part series premiering July 29 on ESPN and ESPN+.

Where is Mark Consuelos on ‘Kelly and Mark'? Why Jerry O'Connell Is Filling In

One half of Live with Kelly and Mark's lead hosting duo was absent from the show's latest episode. After starting off his week on the daytime talk show, Mark Consuelos did not appear alongside his wife, Kelly Ripa, on Tuesday, July 29. Instead, Jerry O'Connell temporarily took over his spot at the hosting desk. According to Kelly, Consuelos found himself 'stuck' at the airport for several hours yesterday after initially leaving to catch a flight at noon. 'He's working on a show out in L.A.,' she explained to viewers. Consuelos' original flight was eventually canceled due to an engine problem, while his rescheduled flight was canceled due to a 'body problem' with the plane. 'He was booked onto another flight. It was supposed to take off at 7:30, and at 9:30, he finally called me and said, 'We're getting ready to take off,'' Ripa said before joking, 'I don't know if he arrived. I hope he did.' Ripa hinted that Consuelos will be absent from Live for the rest of the week while revealing that he misses their dog more than her. 'He was more emotional about leaving Lena. The leaving Lena and the texting me, 'How's Lena? Is Lena okay? Does Lena miss me?'' she quipped. 'There was lots of reassurances with Mark that,' Yes, Lena does miss you. Yes, I put your shirt in her crate so that she doesn't forget you for five days.'' O'Connell, for his part, was excited to take on the hosting gig, having wrapped up his run on The Talk back in December 2024. Looking to take advantage of New York City's walkability, O'Connell shared that he walked to the show's studio that morning — only to arrive soaking wet because of the hot weather. 'I sweated out a — I'm not even joking — a Hawaiian Punch I drank in 1983. That's how hot it was,' he said before showing a snap of what he looked like when he arrived to work. O'Connell's hair stuck to the sweat on his face, while his shirt featured several sweat stains. Despite the rough start to the day, O'Connell praised Live's hair and makeup team for getting him presentable to appear on-air. 'It is the soupy season in New York,' Ripa joked. 'People have a fine musk to them.' She added, 'I did not walk here because I feel like our audience has suffered enough.' Consuelos' Live absence comes the same day as the premiere of his and Ripa's new show, Running With the Wolves. ‘Running With the Wolves' Review: Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos on ESPN

Regular viewers of 'Live With Kelly and Mark,' the highly rated, nationally syndicated morning talk show on ABC television, are regularly updated on new movies, trendy recipes and the stats on Campobasso FC, a third-tier Italian soccer club based in the largely overlooked region of Molise. Why? Because co-hosts Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos are part owners. Are foreign sports teams the new celebrity accessory? Our hosts are in on that joke: The first thing that pops up in their ESPN series 'Running With the Wolves' is an interview last year with Ryan Reynolds, whose 'Welcome to Wrexham' has chronicled his own purchase, with actor Rob McElhenney, of a storied Welsh football team. 'Wolves,' also the nickname of the Campobasso players, is a different kind of show than 'Wrexham,' beginning with the fact that Ms. Ripa and Mr. Consuelos are married, and Messrs. Reynolds and McElhenney are not. The chemical equations are different. And the running gag is that Ms. Ripa apparently thought buying a troubled calcio squad was all about Mr. Consuelos scratching a sports itch and would be the gateway to him buying her a villa in Italy. As of episode 4 of this four-part season (there will be more), no real estate has been acquired. But there's enough stress to fill St. Peter's Basilica.

Kelly Ripa reveals Mark Consuelos' ‘repulsive' morning habit

Kelly Ripa has hope and faith that Mark Consuelos won't ask for this in the morning. The talk show host, 54, revealed that she finds the 54-year-old 'Riverdale' actor's preference for morning sex 'disgusting.' 'Men are morning people. He hasn't learned, he'll never learn,' Ripa said on Wednesday's episode of the 'Not Skinny But Not Fat' podcast. 'He wants to kiss. And I have a retainer in. And he's got his nasal strips on. It's like we are the most repulsive, disgusting. I'm already pre-disgusted for tomorrow morning.' 11 Kelly Ripa on the 'Not Skinny But Not Fat' podcast. YouTube/@notskinnybutnotfat Since the couple, who tied the knot in 1996, started working together on 'Live with Kelly and Mark,' Ripa has pushed for 'night only' intimacy. And the morning talk show's early call time has 'almost repulsed' Consuelos from wanting morning sex. 'It's so early, and it's like a miracle. It's like a miracle has occurred,' the actress quipped. 11 Kelly Ripa opens up about sex on the 'Not Skinny But Not Fat' podcast. YouTube/@notskinnybutnotfat Despite her time of day preference, Ripa views sex like exercise, where being consistent in a routine makes it easier to do. 'The more you do it, the more you do it,' she explained. 'And so, you just have to do it and then you're like, 'Oh, I remember why I like this.'' Ripa also told host Amanda Hirsch her biggest issue when it comes to working with her husband of 30 years. 11 Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos take a selfie in bed. kellyripa/Instagram 'He doesn't listen to me frequently, and he will tune me out while we are live on the air,' the 'All My Children' alum stated. 'And I'm like here's the thing, I'm used to you tuning me out in life, but when you are being paid, highly paid by the way, to literally listen to me, then you have to listen to me.' 'Literally I watch him,' she detailed. 'I watch him drift away. And I'm like, 'Hey don't do that.'' Consuelos officially joined Ripa behind the desk in 2023, after Ryan Seacrest's departure. However, at first, it wasn't easy to get the soap star on board. 11 Kelly Ripa shares a sweet snap with Mark Consuelos. kellyripa/Instagram 11 Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos pose at the beach. kellyripa/Instagram 'It was really convincing Mark,' Ripa recalled. 'Because initially when they came to Mark, he flat out refused.' 'I also thought that was kind of a bad idea,' she confessed. 'I was like a husband and a wife hosting a morning show is different than a husband and wife acting together or producing something together.' But ultimately, his time on the show has been well-received. 11 A throwback picture of Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos. If he hates something, he hates it out loud no matter how much we're supposed to love it.' 'And when he thinks something is dumb,' she noted, 'he says it no matter how much we're supposed to pretend to like whatever the thing is.' It was a side-zip dress, and I kept getting zipped into the dress,' Ripa shared on a June episode of 'Live with Kelly and Mark.' Ripa also mentioned in the podcast that Consuelos was hesitant but the response from the audience has been positive. 'The audience really responds to Mark because Mark has a zero Fs attitude,' she said. 'And the audience loves that. There's no artifice with him.'
