IMD issues Yellow alert for Jharkhand, schools to remain closed in Palamu amid heavy rain
RANCHI: A yellow alert has been issued for all districts of Jharkhand. According to the Meteorological Center in Ranchi, there will be continuous rain in the state from July 17 to July 20. During this time, there is also a possibility of thunderstorms in several districts. The Met Department has appealed to people to remain alert and cautious during these days. 'There will be light to moderate rain in various areas of Jharkhand during this period. There is also a possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall in some areas,' stated the alert issued by the Met Department. In view of the possibility of lightning incidents, a yellow alert has been issued, which indicates potential danger and may affect public life. It further added that a low-pressure area has formed in south-west Bihar and adjoining eastern Uttar Pradesh. In the next 24 hours, this low-pressure area will move towards Bihar and Uttar Pradesh in the form of a cyclonic circulation. It will also affect the weather in Jharkhand. During the last 24 hours, the monsoon remained active in almost all districts of the state. Heavy rainfall was also recorded at some places. The highest rainfall was measured at 204 mm in Chainpur of Palamu. On the other hand, 67 mm of rain was recorded in Deoghar, 64.6 mm in Jamshedpur, 9 mm in Chaibasa, and 3 mm in Ranchi. The Department also informed that there will be no major change in the maximum temperature at present. However, in the coming three days, the maximum temperature may increase by 2 to 3 degrees. The highest temperature of 34.8 degrees Celsius was recorded in Saraikela, while the lowest temperature of 21 degrees Celsius was recorded in Latehar. Meanwhile, in the wake of incessant rain in Palamu, the district administration has ordered all schools to remain closed on July 17. Deputy Commissioner Samira S. has directed all BDOs and COs to keep an eye on their respective areas. Safe places have also been marked for villages situated on riverbanks so that affected families may be given shelter there. The Assistant Municipal Commissioner has been instructed to form a special team to deal with the problem of waterlogging in the city. The team will drain the water using motor pumps. Arrangements have also been made to deal with the situation of falling trees. According to Palamu SP Rishma Rameshan, warnings are being issued advising people not to go near riverbanks. Public announcements are being made for this purpose. Adequate police force has been deployed.

Top Maoist commander Tulsi killed in encounter
Palamu: In a major success for the security forces for the second consecutive day in the ongoing anti-Maoist operations in Jharkhand, top Maoist commander Tulsi Bhuiyan was gunned down in the Palamu district, officials said on Tuesday. The fierce encounter that began on Monday night in the Hussainabad subdivision of the district continued on Tuesday. An SLR rifle was recovered from the encounter site. The gunfight continued into Tuesday morning, and unconfirmed reports suggest that several other Maoists may have been injured or killed. Security personnel have launched a massive search operation across the area. Senior officials, including Palamu Superintendent of Police (SP) Rishma Rameshan and top CRPF officers, are present at the spot. According to an official, the operation was launched based on intelligence inputs about the presence of Maoist commander Nitesh -- who carries a reward of Rs 15 lakh -- and his squad in Sitachuan, a forested area on the border of Mohammadganj and Haidernagar police station limits. Sanjay Godram, another Maoist with a bounty of Rs 10 lakh, is also believed to be part of this group. As police and security forces closed in on the location, Maoists opened fire, prompting the forces to retaliate. In a significant development, 18 Maoists, including four associated with Battalion No. 1, surrendered in Sukma, Chhattisgarh, under the influence of the 'Niyad Nellanar' scheme. According to Sukma SP, Kiran G Chavan, Naxals from four different battalions, including those active in South Bastar, chose to abandon insurgency. He urged others to follow suit, highlighting that surrendered individuals would receive benefits from state government schemes aimed at rehabilitation. After elimination of Basvaraju – the dreaded Maoist who was carrying a Rs 1.5 crore bounty on his head, more Maoists are expected to surrender, the officer said. The surrender is an outcome of the 'Lon Varratu' campaign launched by the government and actively propagated by security forces. 'Lon Varratu' means come back home to your roots. The officers talk with the Maoists, particularly the young ones to lay down arms and join the mainstream of development.

Security forces recover huge cache of ammunition on Jharkhand-Bihar border during inter-state Maoist operations
RANCHI: The security forces have recovered at least two lockers (Almirah) along with a huge cache of ammunition on the Jharkhand-Bihar border during an inter-state operation against the banned CPI (Maoist) being conducted in the Chakarbandha forests. According to Palamu SP Rishma Rameshan, all the landmines were hidden by the Maoists in a cave, which was to be used later, possibly to target the security forces. 'As of now, the security forces have also recovered two lockers, supposedly belonging to top Maoist Commander Sandeep Yadav, who carried a reward of Rs 25 lakh on his head. Sandeep Yadav died in 2023,' said the SP. The lockers, which have been recovered from the jungles, were being used to hide the levy money extorted from the contractors and businessmen, she added.
