COIMBATORE: In a remarkable milestone in public healthcare, three-year-old Rishwanth from Sokkanur village in Kinathukadavu taluk has taken his first independent steps, thanks to a custom-fitted, lightweight prosthetic leg provided free of cost by the Coimbatore Government Medical College Hospital (CMCH) under the Chief Minister's Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme. Born with congenital deformities in both legs, Rishwanth's right leg had to be amputated below the knee. After surgery, he was admitted to the Department of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine at CMCH, where he was given a prosthetic leg tailored to his measurements and walking needs. Rishwanth is the youngest beneficiary in Tamil Nadu to receive such advanced prosthetic support. CMCH is also the first government medical college hospital in the state to establish an in-house prosthetic limb manufacturing unit, eliminating the need for patients to travel to Chennai or seek expensive private care. Since 2020, over 200 artificial arms and legs have been provided to differently-abled patients through this facility.

A three-year-old boy from Sokkanur village near Kinathukadavu in Coimbatore district received a customised prosthetic leg after he underwent an above-knee amputation for his right leg due to a congenital condition at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH). A release from CMCH said that M. Rishwanth was admitted to the Orthopaedics Department, after having been diagnosed with a congenital deformity in both legs, and an above-knee amputation was done on his right leg. After the procedure, the boy was admitted to the Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine Department, where a customised prosthetic leg was made, fitted and given gait training under the Chief Minister's Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme (CMCHIS). The boy is now able to function independently, walk and gain self-confidence through the treatment, said the statement. Rishwanth is the youngest beneficiary to have benefited so far under this prosthetic scheme of CMCHIS at the hospital. The artificial leg also has a printed socket, specifically designed for children to make it easy for young children to use. The artificial leg given to the boy weighs below 500 gram and its carbon fibre foot and ankle have been made in a modern way for the first time to facilitate children's walking. The treatment for fitting the artificial leg could have caused ₹3 lakh in private facilities, it said.

Remove Ads Six years after it came to light, all nine men arrested in the sensational Pollachi sexual assault and extortion case were convicted and sentenced to "life imprisonment till death" by a Mahila Court here on Tuesday. Judge R Nandhini Devi who pronounced the quantum of punishment, ordered compensation of Rs 85 lakh to the eight nine accused-- Rishwanth alias N Sabarirajan, K Thirunavukkarasu, M Sathish, T Vasanthakumar, R Manivannan alias Mani, P Babu alias 'Bike' Babu, K Arulanantham, T Haronimus Paul, and M Arunkumar - all aged between 30 and 39 - were brought to the court from the Salem Central Prison earlier in the day amidst tight is a former AIADMK functionary who was expelled from the party in the wake of his alleged involvement in the crime. CBI Special Public Prosecutor Surenda Mohan told reporters that all nine accused were charged with Sections 376 D (gang rape) and 376 (2) (n) (repeated rape on the same woman) of the erstwhile Indian Penal Code (IPC) and were convicted by the court and given "life imprisonment till death", as sought by the CBI which probed the matter that had even echoed in the Tamil Nadu life terms ranging from one to five were awarded to the convicted men, with second accused Thirunavukkarasu getting the highest of five, he said.
