Three-year-old boy in Coimbatore gets prosthetic limb after amputation
A three-year-old boy from Sokkanur village near Kinathukadavu in Coimbatore district received a customised prosthetic leg after he underwent an above-knee amputation for his right leg due to a congenital condition at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH).
A release from CMCH said that M. Rishwanth was admitted to the Orthopaedics Department, after having been diagnosed with a congenital deformity in both legs, and an above-knee amputation was done on his right leg.
After the procedure, the boy was admitted to the Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine Department, where a customised prosthetic leg was made, fitted and given gait training under the Chief Minister's Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme (CMCHIS). The boy is now able to function independently, walk and gain self-confidence through the treatment, said the statement.
Rishwanth is the youngest beneficiary to have benefited so far under this prosthetic scheme of CMCHIS at the hospital. The artificial leg also has a printed socket, specifically designed for children to make it easy for young children to use. The artificial leg given to the boy weighs below 500 gram and its carbon fibre foot and ankle have been made in a modern way for the first time to facilitate children's walking. The treatment for fitting the artificial leg could have caused ₹3 lakh in private facilities, it said.

Breast, cervical cancer cases surge in Coimbatore district
Coimbatore: There is an alarming rise in breast and cervical cancer cases in the district. If the data available with the 13 govt hospitals that screen for breast and cervical cancers in Coimbatore is anything to go by, the test positivity rate is steadily increasing by 2% to 4% every year. Early menstruation, late menopause and obesity are major reasons for breast cancer. Women consuming excessive fatty foods and alcohol could also contract breast cancer. Women with poor vaginal hygiene, multiple sexual partners and multiple child births are at the risk of contracting cervical cancer," says Dr P Guhan, director and chief oncologist, Sri Ramakrishna Hospital. As per the data gathered from the 13 govt hospitals, 1,164 women were tested positive for cervical cancer in the district in 2024-25, against 726 in 2023-34 and 484 in 2022-23. The hospitals employ the VIA (visual inspection with acetic acid) screening method to diagnose cervical cancer. "The positive cases are referred to the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) for further treatment. The data shows that there is a rise in cervical cancer cases in the semi urban and rural areas of the district every year. Hence, screening for the same should be beefed up in the villages and suburban areas. Early detection is very important to cure cancers," said an official with the Public Health Department. Similarly, the district has recorded an increase in breast cancer cases to 842 in 2024-25 from 623 in 2023-24 and 517 in 2022-23. According to the oncologists, breast cancer cases are high in urban areas, while rural areas top the district in cervical cancer cases. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "Only early detection and treatment could cure these cancers, which could be caused by lifestyle changes and diet as well," they say. A Nirmala, dean, CMCH, said it was advisable for every woman under the reproductive age to get vaccinated with HPV (Human Papillomavirus) and take a pap smear test. "Women above the age of 30 should do a mammogram annually or at least once in two years. Usually, cancer cells take a couple of years to reach 1cm in size and become visible. Hence, annual screening is a preventive measure." These days, she says, chemotherapy, surgery and most other treatments are covered under the chief minister's comprehensive health insurance scheme both in govt and private hospitals. "Despite all these facilities, a few people refuse to get diagnosed."

Tiruchy MGMGH resumes bypass surgeries after three-year break
TIRUCHY: Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital (MGMGH) has resumed performing cardiac bypass surgeries, which were suspended since 2022. According to hospital sources, a triple vessel coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery was performed on a 55-year-old patient from Kumbakonam last Thursday. A multidisciplinary team led by cardiac surgeon Dr Ashwini performed the surgery, under the supervision of Dean Dr S Kumaravel. The surgery was performed under the Chief Minister's Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme (CMCHIS). The patient was discharged on June 4. Addressing media persons on Wednesday, Dean Dr. Kumaravel said, 'We were not able to perform such procedures earlier due to shortage of cardiothoracic surgeons and limitations in policy. But now, with support under the National Health Mission (NHM) and formalised MoUs, we will be operating on all patients who require bypass surgery here.'

MBBS, BDS application forms to be available from June 6
Application forms for admission to state quota seats in MBBS and BDS programmes will open up on June 6, Health Minister M. Subramanian announced on Wednesday. The Minister held a consultation with the heads of private and government medical and dental colleges. The admission process would commence early to enable scrutiny of the applications diligently. In the previous years the government had waited until the declaration of NEET and as a result there was not much time to scrutinise the applications, resulting in errors, he explained. Candidates must include their NEET registration number while filling in the applications. The final merit list will, however, be based on the results provided by the National Testing Agency. Candidates have been given the opportunity to wait till the declaration of NEET results. Such candidates must apply within five days of declaration of NEET results, the medical education has decided. Mr. Subramanian has instructed private medical and dental colleges to be transparent about the fee structure, giving a break up of the various components, such as tuition and hostel fees and any other amount that is being collected. Earlier in the day the Minister launched training programmes for health care workers. There is no reason to panic over COVID 19 infection, health minister M. Subramanian said here on Wednesday. Until Tuesday 216 persons have been diagnosed with COVID-19 infection and they are getting better. Those who have been infected are being monitored, the minister said. To remain safe people have been advised to wear masks in crowded places to avoid contracting infections. A person who has been diagnosed with COVID 19 infection and dies is tested for various other parameters as well to identify the cause of death. 'We do all the investigations including for COVID 19. The person may have died of other underlying causes and COVID 19 infection may have been an incidental finding,' health department officials said at a media briefing here on Wednesday on the sidelines of launch of training programme for health workers in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and fatty liver disease. The field workers will raise awareness about the diseases and those who have them would be urged to get screened at primary health centres. The health department has also planned to launch 'Nalam Kakkum Stalin' in a fortnight in Chennai, the Minister announced. Under the scheme people can seek master health check-ups nearer to home. At the camps people can also get the required persons with disabilities certificates, persons can also get their cards under the Chief Minister's Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme. Across the state 1,256 camps will be held by December-end.
