No injuries after pane of glass shatters over Saskatoon Canada Day celebration
WATCH: Saskatoon's Canada Day celebrations were briefly interrupted when a window on Nutrien Tower — the province's tallest building — spontaneously shattered above the crowds. Saskatoon's Canada day celebrations at River Landing were interrupted when a pane of glass from Nutrien Tower shattered and rained down on patrons below. The Saskatoon Fire Department said firefighters were called to the area just before 5 p.m. with reports of glass falling from an exterior window on the 14th floor. Canada Day Saskatoon director Shad Ali said he was just about to take a rest at the festival office and mused to a colleague about cooling off his feet in the water feature at K.W. Nasser Plaza when he saw the glass shatter. 'And then I went, 'it's raining glass,'' he said. 'And we headed outside right away.' No one was injured from the falling glass. Ali said because a command bus was already at the festival site, first responders arrived quickly and were able to clear the scene. Hopewell Real Estate Services — which manages the property — cordoned off the plaza for the remainder of Tuesday's programming, in case more glass continued to fall. Despite an estimated 50,000 to 55,000 people attending the area for the annual party, Ali said patrons and staff calmly and quickly rolled with the disruption to keep things moving along. Shattered glass (Laura Woodward / CTV News) 'Everything went off without a hitch. It didn't really put any kind of a wrinkle in the plans too much,' Ali said. 'We were able to relocate all of our activities under the street or any nearby park areas, and everything worked pretty well.' This isn't the first time glass has shattered and fallen since the towers at River Landing opened to the public nearly four years ago. A boarded-up window can be seen at RBC Tower, and people living in the condominium tower received a letter from the property managed a little more than a month after K.W. Nasser Plaza opened to the public on Aug. 3, 2021, about the risk of glass panels combusting. The letter obtained by CTV News advised people not to lean on glass or railings, and not to attach anything to the glass, and said 'these are isolated fluke incidents.' Hopewell was unable to provide a statement, but a staff member on site said glass breaking or falling from high rise buildings happens more often than people realize.
