Scoop: City gives Allianz Amphitheater control of public lot during concerts

The city is leasing the Belle Isle parking lot it co-owns to Allianz Amphitheater and Live Nation for its use during concerts. Why it matters: The lease terms make the 60 public and free spaces unavailable for the public's use from 1pm to midnight on concert days. That, combined with other street and lot closures, is making it harder to access the river in the area. State of play: Richmond has "a paid, month-to-month trial lease" with the venue owners for the Belle Isle lot, city parks spokesperson Tamara Jenkins tells Axios. Richmond police also shut down Brown's Island Way at 2nd Street and Tredegar Street between 5th and Brown's Island Way during concerts, she says. The Tredegar Street parking lot — the gated paid lot near the American Civil War Museum — is also closed to the public during shows, a museum spokesperson tells Axios. What they're saying: Allianz uses the lots for staging and staff parking, Jenkins says. The street closures and leased lot aim to help with crowd control and public safety, she adds. Allianz did not immediately respond to Axios' request for comment. Zoom out: The closures are similar to what happens during RiverRock and the Folk Festival, Jenkins says. But those festivals draw hundreds of thousands of attendees and happen over three-days twice a year, far less frequently than the 7,500-person venue's summer schedule. Worth noting: Jenkins did not respond to Axios' request for the lease terms by press time. The big picture: Parking has been one of locals' top complaints about the city's new outdoor concert venue since it opened last month (and, if we're being honest, since it was announced). At the outset, Allianz said there'd be no parking at the venue and encouraged attendees to use public transit or ride-sharing apps. For drivers, the venue offers a map of paid places to park within a 15-minute walk. Yes, but: The lack of onsite parking doesn't appear to have deterred concert-goers. Early reviews on social media (minus parking and food price gripes) suggest the venue is a hit and a welcome addition to life in RVA. And Allianz is hosting its biggest show yet this week: Back-to-back sold-out shows for Dave Matthews Band's first Richmond concert in nearly 30 years (the Belle Isle lot will be closed from 8am-midnight due to the size of the shows).

Frank Lloyd Wright's last house, just built from 1959 plans, is open for overnight stays

The construction of American architect Frank Lloyd Wright's last project, 'RiverRock', in the US state of Ohio has reached completion and the property is now open for overnight rentals. Advertisement While internationally renowned for his flagship projects including Fallingwater in Pennsylvania, the Johnson Wax Company headquarters in Wisconsin, the Ennis House in Los Angeles and the Guggenheim Museum in New York, Wright also created a design for smaller, more affordable residences called Usonian homes. RiverRock was Wright's final Usonian home blueprint, delivered in 1959. More than 60 years later, the three-bedroom, two-bathroom home was built on the homesite as originally intended, following Wright's original plans while also meeting modern building code regulations. The property in Willoughby Hills, Ohio, was bought by Sarah Dykstra in 2018. The purchase included an existing 1955 Wright home called The Louis Penfield House, as well as the unbuilt Wright plan known as Project #5909 in the Taliesin Archives, Wright's office.

Frank Lloyd Wright's last home was just built near Cleveland

A new Frank Lloyd Wright house has completed construction in Willoughby Hills, a wooded suburb 20 miles east of Cleveland. Why it matters: Uhh, there's a new Frank Lloyd Wright house? In 2025? And it's open for overnight rentals? Wright, who designed more than 1,000 structures over a 70-year career, is regarded by many as the greatest and most influential American architect. State of play: The home dubbed RiverRock was Wright's final Usonian blueprint. The three-bedroom, two-bathroom house was built on site as originally intended. As of 2023, it was the only unbuilt Wright design that still had its original site available. Flashback: Wright was commissioned in the 1950s to design a home overlooking the Chagrin River for painter Louis Penfield and his family. When plans for an interstate highway jeopardized its footprint, Penfield commissioned a second design nearby. Wright died in 1959, and the family assumed the second design died with him. Yes but:"To their astonishment, the week of Wright's funeral, a mailing tube with drawings arrived" from Wright's studio, the RiverRock website explains. They had been on the drawing board when Wright died … [it] was, quite literally, Frank Lloyd Wright's last residential commission." The intrigue: Owner Sarah Dykstra acquired the Louis Penfield house in 2018, which came with the Wright plans — Project #5909 in Wright's Taliesin Archives. Construction began in 2023. What they're saying: "When we set out to build this home, we gave a mandate to the professional team involved: If you must change something due to current building regulations, code, products, etc., do so under the 'skin' so the house will look exactly the same," Dykstra told the News-Herald. "We are thrilled our team of construction professionals delivered on this promise and are proud to present a beautiful 2025 build from Wright's 1959 plans." Stop by: Rental rates start at $800.
