LIMBANG (July 31): Rural riverine communities are urged to always prioritise safety and cleanliness when engaging in river-related activities, said Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Hasbi Habibollah.
His reminder comes in light of a recent fatal crocodile attack in the area.
'Rivers are the lifeblood of our communities. They serve not only as sources of livelihood and transportation, but also as a cultural heritage that must be preserved for future generations,' he said when officiating the River Safety and Cleanliness Awareness programme organised by the Sarawak Rivers Board at Rumah Jampong, Kampung Melaban, Limbang recently.
Hasbi, who is also Limbang MP, stressed the importance of maintaining vigilance and safety near riverbanks, especially among children.
He said the Sarawak Rivers Board continues to enhance its safety protocols and monitoring efforts to ensure boat operators and river users comply with established safety regulations.
The programme aimed to strengthen public awareness on river conservation while encouraging rural folk to act as responsible ecosystem guardians of the ecosystem, in line with the state's sustainable development agenda.
Around 250 participants took part in the event, which included a river cleaning activity at Sungai Mendalam, river safety talks, a colouring competition, and cultural performances by the local community.
Hasbi also took part in a symbolic tree-planting ceremony and presented safety jackets to ferry boat operators as part of efforts to foster a stronger culture of river safety along Sarawak's rivers. crocodile attack Hasbi Habibollah river safety
