The Ongoing History of New Music, encore presentation: Rivers Cuomo and Weezer, Alt-Rock's Nerd Heroes, part 2

The way I see it, there are three types of bands that stretch across a spectrum. First, there's the extreme sort, a group that will do almost anything to attract attention…you're probably thinking of some names right now. Next to them are the traditional sort, and they comprise the vast majority of bands out there. These are groups that go out there, do their thing earnestly and honestly, and hope that this will be enough for music lovers. They occupy a huge part of this spectrum. And then we have the third type: the quirky, eccentric, and weird. These groups come in all sorts of flavours, from mildly bent to the gloriously stupid and the confoundingly weird. These bands go a long way into making music fun and unpredictable. Not all land with audiences—they're too strange, not enough people get the joke, or maybe they're just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Story continues below advertisement But there can be a balance between being quirky and fun and having songs that have widespread appeal. They have just enough of the nerd factor to set themselves apart while not being so nerdy that they'll turn too many people off. It takes songwriting skills, careful management of your image, and plenty of creativity and imagination, especially if you want to main things over more than just a couple of albums and touring cycles. Among the very, very, very best of this class of band is Weezer. They've perfected a formula that includes musical talent, wit, self-deprecation, left-of-centre thinking, a desire to have fun, a willingness to experiment, some clever marketing, and above all, to let their fans in on everything. It's an approach that has worked very, very well for decades. This is part two of Rivers Cuomo and Weezer: Alt-Rock's Nerd Heroes, Part 2. And, of course, the playlist from Eric Wilhite. Weezer at Trinity College review: A thoroughly satisfying gig

Weezer Trinity College Dublin ★★★★☆ They have made albums known as Blue, Green, Red, White, Teal and Black, but grey is the dominant colour tonight. Thankfully, the cloud that hangs over Trinity College Dublin is a physical rather than a metaphorical one, and it eventually gives way to a smattering of rain as Weezer play their songs Island in the Sun and Holiday. The irony of the so-called Irish summer is not lost on the southern Californian band and their fans. Rivers Cuomo and his bandmates may not have brought the weather with them from California, but they have brought a set list that's undeniably all killer, no filler. Now celebrating their 33rd year of existence, the four-piece last played Ireland on a double bill with the Smashing Pumpkins in 2024, and with Green Day and Fall Out Boy in 2022, but 'it's always better with just Weezer fans', as a grinning Cuomo tells the sold-out audience. Now in his mid-fifties, Cuomo remains the archetypal geeky indie frontman, hair now greying but nonetheless resplendent in an argyle vest and sensible cardigan. His between-song chat may be limited, but he has certainly lost none of his enthusiasm for the songs. He gleefully tackles their 22-song set list with a spirited sense of earnestness, from the bolshie crowd-pleaser Hash Pipe to the grimy thud of In the Garage, one of many tracks drawn from their debut (and arguably best) album. [ Trinity Summer Series 2025: Weezer, Rag'n'Bone Man, Amble and Marti Pellow Opens in new window ] As progenitors of power pop with a grungy alt-rock kick, Weezer have released 14 albums since that era-defining Blue album in 1994. It is somewhat telling, however, that tonight's set list features nothing from the last 15 years; with arguably diminishing returns on their more recent fare, their set list is heavy on early material. Not that the crowd is complaining: My Name is Jonas, Surf Wax America and the thunderous chorus of Undone (The Sweater Song) spark joyful singalongs, plastic pint glasses flung skywards in delight. Cuomo playfully changes the lyrics of several tracks to suit the location: the soaring, anthemic refrain of Beverly Hills becomes 'living in Dublin , Ireland', while Pork and Beans drops in a reference to U2 that seems to go over most people's heads. Photograph: Helle Arensbak/Ritzau Scanpix/AFP via Getty Images Tracks from their second album Pinkerton are equally ecstatically received, including ferocious standout Pink Triangle and a brilliant El Scorcho. They depart the stage while it's still bright – this great gig would have been marvellous in a dark venue with an effective light show – returning only for a brief encore with the night's two best songs: a glorious telling of Say it Ain't So, and a brilliant, breezy Buddy Holly, a track laden with melody and spiky agitation that sums up the best of Cuomo's songwriting. To his credit, he sings the latter with the gusto of a man who has just penned it rather than one who has spent the last three decades being defined by it: it's a thrilling end to a thoroughly satisfying gig. Their recent recorded output may leave a lot to be desired, but tonight at least, Weezer are a band that fully understood the assignment: shut up and play the hits.

Lil Wayne's New Song 'Island Holiday' Samples Weezer's 'Island in the Sun'

The post Lil Wayne's New Song 'Island Holiday' Samples Weezer's 'Island in the Sun' appeared first on Consequence. During his peak mixtape days, Lil Wayne gained notoriety for rapping over hip-hop and R&B instrumentals from other artists. Now, Weezy has sampled rock band Weezer's 2001 single 'Island in the Sun' on a new song from his latest album, Tha Carter VI. Titled 'Island Holiday,' Lil Wayne's track borrows heavily from the cut on Weezer's 2001 self-titled album (better known as The Green Album). In addition to sampling the guitar riff, Wayne interpolates many of Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo's original lyrics. Listen to both tracks below. Get Lil Wayne Tickets Here 'When you're on a holiday/ You can't find the words to say,' a heavily Auto-Tuned Weezy croons while opening the track. 'All the things that come to you/ And I wanna feel it, too.' He continues by singing, 'On an island in the sun/ We'll be playin' and havin' fun/ And it makes me feel so fine/ I can't control my brain.' These lines are identical to the lyrics in the first verse and chorus of 'Island in the Sun.' Although it's unclear whether Weezer's original guitar riff was directly sampled on 'Island Holiday,' Cuomo is credited as both a composer and lyricist on Tidal. This isn't the first time Lil Wayne and Weezer have crossed paths. The rapper was previously featured on the band's Raditude cut 'Can't Stop Partying,' which was released in 2009. Elsewhere on Tha Carter VI, Lil Wayne also samples classic hip-hop tracks like Noreaga's 'Banned from TV' and LL Cool J's 'Rock the Bells.' Pick up your physical copy of the album here. Wayne will kick off his headlining US tour in support of Tha Carter VI tonight, June 6th. See the full list of dates below, and get tickets here. Jack Black joins cast of Weezer's new movie

The band's frontman Rivers Cuomo shared an AI-generated movie poster on the group's Discord platform, "Weezer, co-starring Jack Black'. Preemptively warding off disbelief, Cuomo added in the caption, "Nope, it's real'. The A Minecraft Movie actor and Tenacious D musician has a history with the Beverly Hills hitmakers. Tenacious D toured with Weezer in 2001, and Black's wife Tanya Haden played cello on the brand's 2003 cover of Green Day's song Worry Rock. Cuomo announced the existence of the film during Weezer's set at Coachella festival earlier this month.
