Trans Athlete in Political Storm Earns, and Shares, First Place in Event

The California athlete at the center of a searing political debate over trans girls' competing in girls' sports went home a winner on Saturday in what is arguably the most competitive state track and field meet in the nation. AB Hernandez, a junior from Jurupa Valley High School in Riverside County, shared first place in the high jump and triple jump, and also shared second in the long jump. Her spot on the awards podium was a sign of how complicated her participation in the competition had become. With President Trump threatening to cut federal funding to the state if the trans girl competed, the event organizer changed the rules just days before the event in hopes of allaying concerns about the fairness of allowing Ms. Hernandez to compete. The athlete who finished behind Ms. Hernandez would be elevated to share her placement. The first awards came after the long jump, and that moment of recognition did not turn out to be awkward or contentious, as some people had feared. The two girls — Ms. Hernandez and Brooke White of River City High School — joked around like any teenage girls would, giving each other an enthusiastic double-handed high-five before they squeezed onto one step of the podium together. Then after both received medals, they put their arms around each other, held their medals out from their chests and smiled for photos. Ms. Hernandez and the event's winner — Loren Webster of Wilson High School — both had leaped more than a foot farther than anyone else in the event. For Ms. Webster, it was a back-to-back state title in the event before she heads off to compete at the University of Oregon. Want all of The Times? Subscribe.

Henderson Fire: Smoke advisory issued for part of Riverside County

The South Coast Air Quality Management District issued a wildfire smoke advisory for some areas of western Riverside County on Saturday due to a 300-acre fire near the Riverside-San Diego county line. The advisory was effective until 8 a.m. Sunday in the areas of Murrieta, Temecula, Sage, Aguanga and Anza. The Henderson fire started Friday evening in north central San Diego County near Pala, and as of Saturday afternoon it was mapped at 300 acres and was 15% contained, according to Cal Fire. The South Coast AQMD said the smoke will most heavily impact areas near and to the northeast of the fire. Particle pollution levels were expected to reach the 'unhealthy for sensitive groups' air quality index category in the affected areas. If the fire remains active, the South Coast AQMD said the particle pollution levels could reach the 'unhealthy' air quality index category by Saturday night and early Sunday morning. Conditions may change quickly, depending on fire activity and weather, the South Coast AQMD announced. Current air conditions by area are available at At least one other fire was burning in Southern California on Saturday. The Eureka Fire in Joshua Tree National Park also had grown to 300 acres by midday Saturday. Henderson Fire burns 300 acres near Riverside, San Diego county border

A 300-acre wildfire burning near the Riverside and San Diego county border prompted evacuation warnings on Friday evening, which have since been lifted. The blaze was first reported at around 5:30 p.m. off of Henderson Road, just north of SR-76 and I-15 near the Pala Casino Spa Resort, according to Cal Fire. Firefighters and water-dropped aircraft rushed to the scene, where they began to combat the quickly growing fire that was being fueled by moderate wind blowing in the area. It grew to engulf more than 200 acres by 10 p.m. As of Saturday morning, the blaze is 15% contained an estimated to have burned 300 acres, according to Cal Fire. The fire prompted a large swath of evacuation orders and warnings in the surrounding area, including in the southernmost part of Riverside County near Pechanga Resort Casino in Temecula. All orders have since been downgraded to warnings as crews continue to gain the upper hand. Late Friday, with winds blowing smoke north, much of southern Temecula was coated in heavy smoke and ash, which led the South Coast Air Quality Management District to issue a smoke advisory for the cities of Temecula, Murrieta and Aguanga due to the fine particulate matter in the air from the fire. It is expected to remain in effect until 8 a.m. Sunday morning. It's unclear what caused the fire. There have been no reports of injury or structures impacted thus far.

Cal Fire officials provided an update on the fire just before 10:30 a.m., saying that crews continued to battle the flames from the ground and above.
