Oregon crews race to douse fire in one of the world's tallest trees
Firefighters in Oregon are racing to save the Doerner Fir - one of the world's tallest and oldest trees - from a fire that has been burning since Saturday. The giant fir, more than 325ft (99m) tall and estimated to be over 450 years old, has already lost about 50ft to the blaze, which may jeopardise its standing in global height rankings, officials say. With more hot and dry weather forecast along Oregon's Coast Range, firefighters are struggling to put the fire out. Officials have discussed some unconventional ways to put out the blaze including building scaffolding to reach and suppress flames higher up the tree. The cause of the blaze remains unknown, though lightening has been ruled out. On Tuesday, an infrared drone found no active flames or smoke at the top of the tree, but it detected heat inside a cavity in the trunk some 280 ft high, federal Bureau of Land Management spokesperson Megan Harper told the BBC. Ms Harper told ABC News that the fire may impact the tree's standing in global height rankings. "We've lost about 50 ft of it, just from fire and pieces falling out," she said, noting that the 50 ft were lost through the top burning. "So I don't know where it'll stand after this, but it's still a magnificent tree." She also said there was not a risk of the tree fully burning down. "The tree is so big, it's got so much mass that it would take a while for it to burn all the way through the tree," she said. The Coos Forest Protective Association has said helicopter bucket drops have reduced fire activity near the top, while sprinklers and containment lines have been set up around the base. Injured hiker airlifted from Mt. Shasta after serious fall near ice sheet
A hiker seriously injured after a fall had to be rescued off one of California's highest peaks over the weekend. The Siskiyou County Sheriff's Office says, on Aug. 16, they got a 911 call from a hiker at Mt. Shasta reporting that his climbing partner was missing. The pair had summited the mountain earlier in the morning but got disoriented around the 11,000' mark while coming back down. One of the hikers got back to their base camp and waited an hour, but the other hiker did not show – prompting the 911 call. Siskiyou County Sheriff Search and Rescue and the Mount Shasta Avalanche Center & Home of the Climbing Rangers mobilized search crews, but inclement weather stopped air support from deploying that first day. Temperatures dropped, plus rain and snow moved in on the 14,179' peak, forcing the search effort to be delayed until Aug. 17. That morning, a California Highway Patrol helicopter started searching the mountain. The sheriff's office says the hiker was eventually spotted off-trail a little after noon at the base of a cliff. It appears the hiker, who was wedged between the scree slope and an ice sheet, had been involved in a significant fall – leaving him with significant injuries. A medical helicopter was deployed and, by 3 p.m., the man was hoisted up and flown to a hospital in Redding. "This is the sixth call we've had in the past couple of weeks on the east side of Mt. Shasta," said Sgt. Aaron Jacobsen with the Siskiyou County Sheriff's Office in a statement. The hikers had used the Clear Creek Trail route, considered one of the easier routes to summit Mt. Shasta. Still, the sheriff's office says the rescue underlines how dangerous even "safe" routes can be. Mt. Shasta is the fifth-highest mountain in California. It's located about 60 miles north of Redding.

Southern California Faces Record Heat and Braces for Wildfires
By A days-long heat wave rolling across parts of the US West is expected to ramp up wildfire risk, prompting California to pre-deploy crews as record-dry vegetation potentially acts as kindling for blazes. Temperatures in Southern California are expected to spike into the 90s and 100s Fahrenheit (32-38 Celsius) by Thursday and remain stubbornly high into the weekend, possibly breaking daily temperature records in some areas, according to the US Weather Prediction Center. That heat — combined with plummeting humidity and a chance of thunderstorms resulting from unstable air over nearby mountain ranges — will create dangerous conditions for brush fires to start or spread.
