Major USDA cuts cripple food banks, school food programs in North Carolina

Durham, North Carolina — At Riverside High School in Durham, North Carolina, the food is as fresh as can be because most of it comes from local growers. "We receive local shredded carrots, cucumbers, lettuce, because we feel that we need to support people in our own communities," Jim Keaten, who runs the nutrition program for Durham Public Schools, told CBS News. Keaten said the school district's produce comes from local growers under a U.S. Department of Agriculture program that was cut by the Trump administration. "Immediately, my thoughts were, what are we going to do?" Keaten said of his first response when he learned the program funding had been cut. "Because these are the funds we use to provide local foods to kids." In March, the White House cut two federal programs that provide just over $1 billion in annual funding to school districts and food banks nationwide. It slashed $660 million in funding to the Local Food for Schools program, and another $420 million to the Local Food Purchase Assistance Cooperative Agreement, which goes to food banks and other local groups. The impact is being felt in every state, including North Carolina, where CBS News followed the trail of food and funds to assess the impact of the cuts. One of the growers providing food to schools is Pine Knot Farms in Hurdle Mills, about one hour's drive from Riverside High School. Linda Leach-Hughes, co-owner of the farm, said last year it sold $150,000 in produce to local schools. She calls the sudden loss of revenue "devastating." "If we do not have this extra income coming in to help local folks in the community, then we will have to lay folks off, we can no longer employ folks," Leach-Hughes told CBS News. Pine Knot Farms also provides produce to the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina. Amy Beros, the food bank's president and CEO, said its share of lost aid from the cuts is now at about $2 million. "I don't understand," Beros said. "We're facing one of the worst hunger crises in decades, and now we're going to increase the need even more. The access to this food makes them not have to choose between the life-saving medicine they need and food for that month." The concern over who gets fed is especially felt by those who grow it. "How are you going to make America great again if you're taking food out of the mouths of babies, senior citizens, nursing homes, rehab centers, hospitals, all of these agencies that are dependent on federal dollars?" Leah-Hughes asked. "How are you going to make America great again?" E.l.f. Maxwell Anderson's trial in the murder of Sade Robinson is underway. Here's what to know

Over a year after 19-year-old college student Sade Carleena Robinson was reported missing, Maxwell S. Anderson will stand trial for her murder. Anderson, 34, has been charged with killing and dismembering Robinson, who was last seen April 1, 2024. In the weeks after she was reported missing, severed human remains were discovered around Milwaukee County, and her car was found burned. According to court records, Robinson was last seen alive on a date with Anderson. He was arrested shortly after she disappeared and has remained in jail since. Here's what to know about the case and charges against Anderson as his trial get underway. Robinson was a student at Milwaukee Area Technical college, a month away from earning an associates degree in criminal justice. As a student, she worked at Pizza Shuttle on Milwaukee's east side. Growing up, Robinson split time between Milwaukee and Florida, where her father lives, but began living in Milwaukee full-time as a teenager. She went on to attend Riverside High School, where she graduated a semester early in December 2021. Anderson grew up in suburban Waukesha County and graduated from Pewaukee High School in 2009. His long history of legal trouble began as a teenager, when he was caught underage drinking on multiple occasions, ran from police several times, and received citations for property damage and obstructing an officer. In Milwaukee, Anderson worked as a bartender and security guard at various clubs and bars in the city, including The Rave and Victor's Nightclub. Robinson was reported missing by a coworker on April 2, 2024. The following morning, a severed human leg was discovered near Lake Michigan in Cudahy. In the ensuing weeks, other body parts belonging to or believed to belong to Robinson were discovered throughout Milwaukee County. On April 1, 2024, Robinson told a building secretary in her apartment she was going on a date that night, according to the criminal complaint, which is based on surveillance footage, cell phone records and witness statements. Robinson's cell phone records show she arranged to meet someone at 5 p.m. that night at the Twisted Fisherman restaurant. Workers at the restaurant told investigators that Robinson was there with Anderson, a former employee. The two left the restaurant shortly before 6:30 p.m. and went to Duke's on Water. After 9 p.m., they went to Anderson's home on the 3100 block of South 39th Street. Around 12:45 a.m., cell phone records show Robinson's phone left the area, went to Pleasant Valley Park in the Riverwest neighborhood, and then to the Warnimont Park area in Cudahy — where the severed leg was found the next day. Robinson's phone stayed in the Warnimont Park area until its battery died shortly after 4:30 a.m. Surveillance video also shows Robinson's Honda Civic at the park until 4:30 a.m. A person was seen walking down a bluff and back to the area of the car several times, according to the complaint. At 7:32 a.m. April 2, Robinson's burned Honda Civic was found near West Lisbon Avenue and North 29th Street in Milwaukee. Using video and witness statements, police identified Anderson as the suspect who burned the vehicle. Anderson was charged with first-degree intentional homicide, mutilation of a corpse and arson on April 12, 2024. He has been unable to post the $5 million bond for his release and has remained in the county jail since his April 4, 2024 arrest. Anderson pleaded not guilty to the charges. Anderson's defense team includes Anthony Cotton, a Waukesha-based criminal defense attorney who rose to prominence after representing one of the adolescents charged in the 'Slender Man' stabbings. In November 2024, Cotton said the defense plans to argue someone other than their client killed Robinson. Assistant District Attorney Ian Vance-Curzan is the lead prosecutor in the case against Maxwell Anderson. Among other murder cases, he prosecuted Sultan Shareef in the 2022 murder of 20-year-old Kania Brunson. Anderson's trial is scheduled to start 9 a.m. on Tuesday, May 27. It was originally set for December 2024, then postponed. The trial will be held in the Milwaukee County Safety Building, part of the county's Courthouse Complex. Milwaukee County Circuit Court Judge Laura Crivello will preside over the trial. The trial is expected to last two weeks. Anderson has a criminal history that includes misdemeanor convictions of disorderly conduct and domestic violence across three cases from 2014 to 2019. In two incidents, he destroyed property at the home of relatives in Waukesha and Door counties, including stealing his mother's car and crashing it into the house's back deck. In 2019, he was charged in Milwaukee with beating a 56-year-old stranger, who tried to intervene when he saw Anderson and a woman arguing on the street. For these and other offenses, Anderson was placed on probation for periods of time, spent stints in jail and temporarily lost his driver's license. 'StrangeFest' turns Scranton theater into macabre marketplace 'I think it's important that we recognize that our veterans made a sacrifice for all of us at home and that this sacrifice some people don't come back from. And we've gotta recognize that every time because not a lot of people are here that we can celebrate that for,' Nicholas Ponas from Taylor Borough said. Even some of the youngest in attendance remember who the day is for. 'The soldiers. We do it for the soldiers,' Aria and Natalia Knight from Taylor Borough told 28/22 News. ‘Bittersweet': Local highway dedicated to Marine killed at military base

PAINESVILLE TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WJW) – A heavily traveled stretch of highway in Lake County was dedicated on Thursday in honor of a local U.S. Marine who was killed in 2023. The lasting tribute is a testament to how the family of the young serviceman turned their shock and anger over the way he died into a quiet campaign for recognition of his service. Relatives said when Austin Schwenk, a 2022 graduate of Riverside High School in Painesville Township, enlisted in the Marine Corps, it was the realization of a lifelong dream as he followed in the footsteps of his hero, his father. Cutting through claims about possible Browns move to dome: I-Team But for Austin's family, the dream became a nightmare when they were notified by the USMC in October 2023 that the 19-year-old Lance Corporal had been shot to death by a fellow Marine in the barracks at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. It was the same Marine base where Austin was born in 2004. 'If you get lost in the war, that's one thing, but to have another Marine walk into your room and shoot you, uncalled for, uncalled for, never ever in a million years. The safest place in the world should have been at Camp Lejeune,' his grandmother, Virginia Gorg, said. Austin's family was overcome with grief when his remains were returned to the Greater Cleveland Area. They were touched by the way his hometown saluted their loved one during an emotional procession and at his funeral, but they said the heartbreaking pain remains. 'It's like a hole, we all have a piece of our life missing and we can never replace it,' his grandmother said. The Marine who killed him, Corporal Jesse Thomas Bopp, accepted a plea bargain and was sentenced to eight years in prison but never revealed why he took Austin's life. 'It would be nice to have that closure, that he would have to be forced to tell us why he did this, why he thought he could get away with it or whatever it was,' said Gorg. Schwenk's family decided to channel their anger and sadness and find a way to pay tribute to the 19-year-old. 'She's a miracle': Toddler bit twice by rattlesnake, received more than 30 vials of antivenom On Thursday, a stretch of Route 44 near the Route 20/Painesville exit, was dedicated by the state of Ohio as the Lance Corporal Austin B. Schwenk Memorial Highway. 'It's heartwarming and bittersweet all at the same time, It just means that we're thankful that he's being remembered for what he gave and he gave it all,' his grandmother said. The family said it is comforting to know that for generations to come, Northeast Ohioans will drive by the memorial sign and ask, 'Who was Austin Schwenk?' Austin's grandmother said she believes he would be proud of the permanent salute from his hometown. 'The reason it rained today was because he was sending tears from Heaven so we didn't have to cry, but that didn't work,' she said as a tear rolled down her cheek. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
