Theater worker killed at motel in 1991, CA cops say. Now a new push for answers

Lucille Morgan's 30-year-old son, Stephen Morgan, was fatally shot outside a California motel in 1991 after his movie theater shift. At the time, she told the Press Enterprise 'she cannot simply let her son's unexplained death fade away,' according to a newspaper clipping shared by Riverside Police. And, despite decades passing, she never has. Lucille Morgan's pursuit for justice in her son's slaying continues, the Riverside Police Department said in an Aug. 11 Facebook post. 'Not a day goes by that I don't think about Stephen,' Lucille Morgan said in the post. 'I still believe someone out there knows what happened that night.' In a renewed call for information, police said they are looking to the public for answers in Stephen Morgan's case. A friend found Stephen Morgan 'shot to death in the parking lot of the University Lodge Motel' where he lived in the early morning of July 11, 1991, police said. Upon finding Stephen Morgan 'unresponsive just outside the driver's side door of his vehicle,' the friend called 911, police said. 'His wallet, keys, and briefcase were still at the scene,' suggesting he had not been robbed, police said. Stephen Morgan had just returned home from a shift at a Moreno Valley movie theater when he was fatally shot, according to police. Richard LaVigne, the motel's manager, told the Press Enterprise in 1991 that Stephen Morgan 'was one of the most easy going guys I've ever met,' 'He would always rather talk than fight,' LaVigne told the newspaper. 'In fact, all the time I knew him, I never saw him fight. He was not the macho type.' Police said investigators followed up on 'numerous leads and tips' but never identified a suspect. Lucille Morgan 'remains determined,' police said. 'Please, if you have any information, no matter how small, come forward and help the detectives find the person who took my son's life,' she said. Anyone with information is asked to contact Riverside police's cold case unit by emailing HomicideColdCase@ or calling 951-320-8000.

Riverside police seek help identifying suspect in 1991 cold case killing

Riverside police are seeking help from the public in identifying the suspect wanted in connection with a cold case killing more than 30 years ago. It happened on July 11, 1991, in the parking lot of University Lodge Motel in the 1800 block of University Avenue, according to the Riverside Police Department. Officers were dispatched to the area after 30-year-old Stephen Morgan was found unresponsive outside of the driver's side door of his car. "It did not appear he had been robbed as his wallet, keys, and briefcase were still at the scene," said a news release from RPD. "Stephen worked at a movie theater in Moreno Valley and was returning home from his shift when he was murdered." Officers said that Morgan was living at the motel at the time. Despite numerous leads and tips over the years, investigators have been unable to identify a suspect. Morgan's mother, Lucille, remains determined to see her son's case resolved, police said. "It's been more than three decades, but not a day goes by that I don't think about Stephen," said a statement from Lucille Morgan. "I still believe someone out there knows what happened that night. Please, if you have any information, no matter how small, come forward and help the detectives find the person who took my son's life." Investigators urge anyone who may have additional information to contact RPD's Homicide Cold Case Unit at (951) 320-8000.

Two arrested for child abuse, drug trafficking in Riverside

Two people were arrested after a child abuse investigation led to the discovery of a large amount of narcotics inside of a Riverside home, according to police. Investigators with the Riverside Police Department began to look into allegations of child abuse back in May after learning that three children may have been physically abused by their parents at a home int he 7900 block of Magnolia Avenue, according to a news release from the department. "By then, the children had already been removed by Riverside County Child Protective Services and placed in temporary foster care," the release said. "During the investigation, detectives also suspected the parents were trafficking illegal narcotics from the home." On July 15, detectives served a search warrant at the home and found more than 900 grams of suspect heroin, over 300 grams of cocaine, nearly 155 grams of ecstasy and approximately 200 grams of suspected fentanyl pills, according to police. They also found cash and packaging materials. "The drugs were found in areas easily accessible to the children, and detectives believe the children were also exposed to the manufacturing and distribution of narcotics," police said. Miguel Jacobo, 34, and Alma Dominguez, 34, were both arrested and remain behind bars without bail. Police reported that Jacobo was booked for suspicion of narcotics violations, child abuse and child endangerment, among other felony charges, while Dominguez was booked on suspicion of felony child endangerment.

Man dies in custody after locking himself in McDonald's bathroom in Riverside

A man died in custody after he locked himself in a McDonald's restroom in Riverside, officials announced Monday. On Friday, officers with the Riverside Police Department responded to a 6:38 a.m. call from McDonald's employees, saying that a man had just locked himself inside the bathroom and was not responding. Police arrived at the McDonald's on the 7400 block of Indiana Avenue and 'had the man exit the restroom,' according to the department's release. 'The man became combative and force was used to detain him,' police stated. 'Medical aid responded, and while being treated by paramedics, he remained combative before going into medical distress.' First responders transported the man to a local hospital, where police said he was treated for over an hour, but, despite the medical staff's efforts, the man later died. 'This investigation is ongoing and no further details are available at this time,' wrote the department. California man arrested after running down 'No Kings Day' marcher in Riverside

A 58-year-old convicted felon accused of intentionally driving into a crowd of protesters marching along a downtown Riverside street, seriously injuring one of them, pleaded not guilty Friday to felony charges, along with his girlfriend. Russell Alan Prentice and 39-year-old Candase Wenzel, both of Riverside, were arrested Monday following a Riverside Police Department investigation that began Saturday night. Prentice is charged with assault using a deadly weapon, hit-and-run and sentence-enhancing allegations of inflicting great bodily injury and leaving the victim comatose. Wenzel is charged with being an accessory after the fact. The defendants were jointly arraigned before Riverside County Superior Court Judge Melissa Hale, who scheduled a felony settlement conference for July 1 at the Riverside Hall of Justice. The pair are being held at the Robert Presley Jail —Prentice on $1 million bail, Wenzel on $10,000 bail. "From the officers in the field that night to our detectives who immediately launched the investigation, along with support from our Crime Analysis Unit, this case was solved quickly thanks to their combined efforts," police Chief Larry Gonzalez said Tuesday. "Equally important were the tips we received from our community, and we're grateful for the information they provided." Here's what to know about the case. Prentice was driving his SUV in the area of University Avenue and Orange Street shortly after 9 p.m. Saturday when he encountered marchers taking part in one of the many "No Kings" rallies that occurred nationwide. The organized events drew a variety of interests to denounce the Trump administration's immigration enforcement actions and other policies, timed to coincide with the 47th president's birthday. Police spokesman Officer Ryan Railsback alleged that Prentice floored his SUV, aiming directly for a number of demonstrators making their way along University, between Orange and Main streets. A young woman was unable to jump out of the vehicle's path and was struck. "The SUV then fled the scene," the police spokesman said. The victim, whose identity was not disclosed, was taken to Riverside Community Hospital, where she remained in critical but stable condition Friday. "Officers found the suspect vehicle's license plate number, and detectives from the Robbery-Homicide Unit began their investigation and subsequently identified the suspect driver," Railsback said. A search warrant was served at Prentice's residence on Jackson Street Monday afternoon, when the defendant was taken into custody without incident. "Detectives also arrested Wenzel ... for her role in taking the suspect vehicle to Phelan, intentionally destroying and concealing evidence," Railsback said. She was taken into custody at the same time and place as Prentice. He has documented prior felony convictions in another jurisdiction that weren't listed in court records. Wenzel has no documented priors. This article originally appeared on Palm Springs Desert Sun: California man arrested after running down 'No Kings Day' marcher
