Norfolk's Riverview Theater set to reopen this summer
NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Nestled by the Virginia Zoo along Granby Street in Norfolk, the Riverview Theater sits dormant, but that is expected to change in a matter of months. 'Every day I looked at this place, it drove me nuts,' said MJ's Tavern owner John Childers, who is working to turn the lights back onto the theater. Renovation updates on historic Riverview Theater in Norfolk With the help of city grants and other private investors, . In total, there is a team of about 20 people working to bring the Riverview back to its former glory. Childers wants to keep the ticket booth inside the lobby and retain this sky painting on its ceiling. Box seats will go on the balcony, soon to overlook hundreds of purple seats on the ground floor that were acquired from another business. The mindset driving it all comes form an old colleague of Childers. 'It's all about the community,' Childers said. 'It's not about making a dollar. It's about making the community happy, giving them a place to be.' He is wants to host concerts from all genres, movies, comedians, church fundraisers, drag shows and many other gatherings. Like at MJ's Tavern, there will be a clear aim to keep Riverview LGBTQ+ friendly — along with an emphasis on local. '[If] they want to listen to a heavy metal band, which will not be for me, they can do it and they will be safe,' Childers said. 'They want listen to Polka, well … I could do with a little polka, but just got to connect the dots I guess. But they all feel safe and nobody is going to harass them.' The structural and electric work is complete, so they can focus more on the cosmetic layers. Setting an aggressive timeline, they are already booking shows for this summer. 'Yes, everything's on track right now,' Childers said. 'We are getting there.' True to its roots, the first event this summer will be a screening of The Sound of Music. It is a longstanding tradition of the Riverview Theater, harkening back to fond memories shared throughout Hampton Roads. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
