All the special movie screenings for kids happening this summer around the Twin Cities

Yahoo7 days ago

It's a full-time job to keep kids busy through the summer, even with camps and other plans eating up some time.
Local organizations like the parks, museums, and play areas add lots of activities throughout the summer to help out. That includes parks and movie theaters adding a heroic number of movie screenings for kids.
Many of those theaters have family-friendly series playing that put classic and recent kid films up at a steep discount. Even better, there are tons of free movies playing in parks all around Minnesota.
To get your family plans in place, here's a look at the kid movies hitting screens throughout the summer. (Though, we're not including newly-released films, since we assume you'll be able to track those down on your own.) Movies with special pricing are noted in parentheses.

Marc Maron announces end of ‘WTF' podcast after 16 years

Comedian Marc Maron announced on the latest episode of his 'WTF' podcast that he was ending the show after a 16-year run. Maron, 61, broke the news at the top of Monday's episode before an interview with guest John Mulaney. 'This podcast will turn 16 years old on Sept. 1. That's a couple months away. Sixteen years, it's a long time,' Maron said. 'It's a long time to do anything, and it's certainly — I've said recently that while I'm living it, I don't feel like time is passing by quickly, but all of a sudden, you're old and you realize you've been doing something for a long time. 'This started in the old garage. No one knew what a podcast was. I was coming out of a horrendous divorce. I was wanting to figure out how to continue living my life. 'Sixteen years we've been doing this and we've decided that we had a great run and now, basically, it's time, folks, It's time.' He added that it was a choice he made alongside longtime producer Brendan McDonald and 'was not some kind of difficult decision.' 'We always said how do we know when we're done? And I always said, 'Whenever Brendan says so.' And he always said, 'If Mark is finished, then we're finished,'' Maron said. 'And thankfully we both realized together that we were done, and there was no convincing or pushback or arguing. We were done. And it's OK, it's OK for things to end… This was a show that started when there were no podcasts. And now, there is nothing but podcasts.' Maron launched 'WTF' in 2009, making it one of the longest-running podcasts, leading to around 2,000 episodes and more than 1 billion downloads. Some of the guests have included other comedians like late 'SNL' comedian Norm Macdonald and former late-night host Conan O'Brien as well as figures like former president Barack Obama and conservationist Jane Goodall. The show revitalized Maron's career, leading to 'Maron,' a sitcom based on his life and roles in Netflix's 'GLOW,' Apple TV's 'Stick,' 'The Bad Guys' animated films and many others. He is also making a new comedy special for HBO that will air in the fall, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Maron teased on the podcast that the upcoming 'home stretch' would bring as many people onto the show as possible. 'It really comes down to the fact that we have put up a new show every Monday and Thursday for almost 16 years and we're tired and we're burnt out, and we are utterly satisfied with the work we've done,' he said. 'We've done great work.' ________

There's Big News From the ‘Children of Blood and Bone' Set

Every item on this page was chosen by an ELLE editor. We may earn commission on some of the items you choose to buy. One of the most celebrated YA novels in recent history—Tomi Adeyemi's Children of Blood and Bone—is finally making its way to the big screen. The first installment in Adeyemi's Legacy of Orïsha fantasy trilogy, the book (and its follow-ups) have become enormous hits, and Paramount Pictures has brought in an impressive talent line-up to shepherd the adaptation. In 2024, Adeyemi told ELLE that there was 'so much happening' with the film, the rights to which Fox 2000 initially acquired in 2017, prior to the book's publication. But after the Walt Disney Company acquired 21st Century Fox, a series of transitions eventually led to the rights expiring, and Paramount Pictures scooped up Children of Blood and Bone in 2022. Since then, Variety reports, 'The project has been a top priority for the studio leadership.' Here's what we know about the film so far. Adeyemi's story follows Zélie Adebola as a young woman in the West African-inspired land of Orïsha, where magic has been all but erased thanks to King Saran's persecution of Zélie's brethren. Zélie must team up with her brother, Tzain, as well as the king's children—Princess Amari and Prince Inan—to take control of their powers, rebel against the monarchy, and restore magic to their land. Children of Blood and Bone has a stacked ensemble. Thuso Mbedu, Tosin Cole, Amandla Stenberg, and Damson Idris will round out the film's leads, with Mbedu (The Woman King) as Zélie; Cole (The Force Awakens) as Zélie's older brother, Tzain; Stenberg (The Acolyte) as Princess Amari; and Idris (Snowfall) as Prince Inan. Joining them are Viola Davis as Mama Agba; Chiwetel Ejiofor as King Saran; Cynthia Erivo as Admiral Kaea; Idris Elba as Lekan; and Lashana Lynch as Jumoke. Readers, fret not. Adeyemi is heavily involved in the adaptation of her beloved series, executive producing and co-writing the script alongside director Gina Prince-Bythewood, equally beloved for her work directing such films as Love & Basketball, The Secret Life of Bees, The Old Guard, and The Woman King. Adeyemi described working with Prince-Bythewood in a 2024 ELLE interview. 'She's the calmest force of nature I've ever witnessed and collaborating with her has been so much fun,' Adeyemi said. 'What Gina does so well is tell these deep, complex stories of women who look like us front and center, with incredible action set pieces, incredible cinematography. It feels divine. It feels bigger than [just] making this project. We're really in sync.' Yes. The movie is scheduled to hit theaters on Jan. 15, 2027. Yes! On June 2, director Gina Prince-Bythewood posted a carousel on Instagram with photos of her and the cast with the caption, 'That is a Wrap on production! 74 days. Two countries and two islands. A passionate and dedicated crew. And an extraordinary cast who gave EVERYTHING. And the journey has just begun…' This story will be updated.
