Rain disrupts ferry service on 3 routes
Panaji: Heavy rainfall on Monday caused disruptions to three ferry boats on different routes in the state— Old Goa, Ribandar, and Betim. The vessels encountered problems when ropes and discarded fishing nets entangled in their propellers, overloading the engines and gearboxes. Despite the movement of each of the three ferries being slowed due to the issue, all passengers reached their destinations safely. 'The affected ferries were promptly taken to the river navigation department (RND) workshop, where the entangled debris was removed,' said RND director Vikram Rajebhosale. He noted that windy weather conditions further reduced ferry speeds across routes throughout the day. The southwest monsoon set over Goa on May 25, two weeks ahead of its usual onset date of June 5. The India Meteorological Department issued an orange alert up to May 29, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places over Goa accompanied by squally winds of 40–50 km/hour, gusting up to 60 km/hour. The RND will begin trial runs for the new roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) ferries on the Ribandar-Chorao route this week. 'The two vessels will be tested under different tidal conditions to evaluate their performance and allow for adjustments to optimise operations on the route,' Rajebhosale said.

Eastern Samar gov appeals for transport subsidies amid San Juanico Bridge repair
Citing price increases, Eastern Samar Governor Ben Evardone on Sunday appealed to the national government to subsidize the cost of transporting consumer goods to his province amid the current load limit on the San Juanico Bridge. During an interview on Super Radyo dzBB, Evardone made the appeal to avoid an increase in the cost of goods coming to Eastern Samar. 'Ang panukala ko, pumasok na ang national government. I-subsidize 'yung mga cost ng transportation ng goods para hindi tumaas,' Evardone said. ''Yung ikakargang mga produkto at supply sa mga RoRo, sagutin dapat ng national government [ang transportation cost] para hindi tumaas ang presyo [ng mga produkto],' he added. (The national government should intervene and subsidize the cost of transportation of goods to avoid an increase in prices. The national government should shoulder the transportation cost of products and supplies delivered via roll-on/roll-off cargo ships.) The three-ton load limit on the San Juanico Bridge was implemented after a recent assessment raised concerns on the structural integrity of the 52-year old 2.164-kilometer long structure that connects the islands of Samar and Leyte. Evardone said the Department of Trade and Industry assessed that prices in the area are still normal. However, the governor said that it might not be the case come the next inventory. He added the supply of petroleum products is also affected by the situation. 'May mga bumibiyahe [nagdadala ng mga supply at produkto] mula Tacloban papuntang Catbalogan at Calbayog ports. Ang problema sa Eastern Samar, ang layo sa amin ng Calbayog, mga seven to eight hours, at Catbalogan, mga four to five hours, so additional cost din talaga 'yan,' Evardone said. (There are products being transported from Tacloban to the ports of Catbalogan and Calbayabog. However, it is far away from Eastern Samar. Calbayog takes about seven to eight hours, while Catbalogan takes about four to five hours, so there are additional costs.) 'Ang pinangangambahan namin, dahil paubos na ang old stock ng consumer products, 'yung mga darating na bago, siguradong magtataas ang presyo niyan kung hindi maaagapan nang intervention ng national government,' he added. (We're worried about the price increase of the incoming supplies since the old stocks of consumer products have almost been consumed. It will become costly if the national government does not intervene.) Evardone also suggested that RoRos should go straight to Eastern Samar since it also has ports in the municipalities of Borongan and Guiuan. Earlier this week, the Province of Samar was placed under a state of emergency. Meanwhile, the Office of Civil Defense Eastern Visayas and the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council are on blue alert following the enforcement of the vehicle weight limit. —RF, GMA Integrated News

The Ro-Ro Effect: Egypt's rise as a global logistics hub
In recent years, Egypt has embarked on a transformative journey to redefine its role in global trade and logistics. Central to this evolution is the strategic expansion of Roll-on/Roll-off (Ro-Ro) shipping lines, specialized maritime routes designed for seamless movement of wheeled cargo like vehicles, trucks, and trailers. As Egypt positions itself as a vital bridge between Europe and Africa, developing its Ro-Ro infrastructure is emerging as a game-changer. This aims to streamline trade flows, reduce logistics costs, and enhance the country's competitiveness on the international stage. To unlock the full potential of Ro-Ro lines, Egypt needs well-coordinated efforts and forward-thinking strategies. Strengthening Egypt's Position as a Key Logistics Hub Establishing Ro-Ro lines significantly benefits Egypt's economy. Economist Ali Metwally tells Arab Finance: 'Ro-Ro lines play a transformative role in reducing logistics costs in Egypt, particularly when compared to more traditional modes such as road freight or fragmented multimodal systems.' 'They have the ability to move large volumes of wheeled cargo directly between ports without the need for extensive handling infrastructure or time-consuming reloading. This drastically reduces both the turnaround time and overall cost of transportation,' Metwally adds. The newly launched Ro-Ro line between Damietta Port and Trieste in Italy, which began its first voyage on November 28th, 2024, exemplifies the role Ro-Ro lines play in facilitating trade. In February 2025, the Ministry of Transport said that the route enhances Egypt's role as a key logistics hub connecting Europe and Africa. It also promotes trade opportunities and supports the export of industrial and agricultural goods by improving access to European markets. For her part, Sherine Ghaly, an associate professor of economics at the Institute of National Planning, tells Arab Finance: 'The Ro-Ro shipping line is anticipated to strengthen Egypt's position as a major logistical center linking Europe and Africa while lowering shipping prices and transit times. It will also expand trade prospects, boost agricultural and industrial exports, and make Egyptian commodities more accessible to European markets.' Additionally, this "green corridor" not only cuts shipping time from six days to approximately two and a half days but also slashes port fees by a substantial 88%, as revealed during the launch ceremony. "The development of Ro-Ro infrastructure also has notable implications for job creation across Egypt. Direct employment arises from port construction, maintenance, operations, and logistics services including customs, warehousing, and transport," Metwally explains. Ghaly agrees, pointing out that 'Ro-Ro shipping is well-positioned to continue being a significant player in the logistics industry due to continuous technological advancements and a commitment to sustainability.' 'Ro-Ro shipping's continuous expansion shows how dynamic the logistics and transportation sectors are, always changing to satisfy the growing demands of international trade. The need for effective, reliable shipping methods increases with the growth of global trade,' she says. Notably, industries like automotive manufacturing, construction materials, and agribusiness stand to gain the greatest advantage of Ro-Ro lines. These sectors handle large volumes or time-sensitive shipments, making them especially well-suited to benefit from Ro-Ro's speed and scalability. This leads to cost savings and greater supply chain reliability, according to Metwally. Enhancing Egypt's Ro-Ro Potential To fully capitalize on the benefits offered by expanding Ro-Ro lines, strategic and well-funded initiatives are paramount. Metwally highlights key areas for focus, emphasizing, "To further enhance the efficiency and capacity of Ro-Ro operations in Egypt, several infrastructure investments are crucial." 'The development and modernization of port facilities, such as expanded berths and digitized port management systems, are essential. This includes integrated dry ports like the 10th of Ramadan City project, which links seaports to industrial zones and urban markets,' Metwally points out. 'The improvement of road and rail connections to these ports is vital to ensure last-mile connectivity. Egypt's current over-reliance on road freight creates inefficiencies and congestion, whereas well-connected multimodal corridors could significantly reduce delays and costs,' Metwally highlights. Meanwhile, Ghaly notes, "As the logistics industry grows, addressing challenges facing Ro-Ro shipping, including operational flexibility, customer service, cargo handling risks and technology adaptation, has become critical to sustaining a competitive advantage." Ghaly explains, 'Ro-Ro businesses must contend with escalating competition and rising client demands by reducing transit times and maximizing resource consumption. This can be achieved by utilizing digital technology, including cloud-based systems and real-time data collection. Such efforts lower CO2 emissions, save money, and increase dependability.' 'In Egypt, a digital platform has been set up to process truck data from the Italian port system, such as shipper information, weight, and cargo type,' as per Ghaly. 'Additionally, using standardized international formats authorized by the UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD), Egyptian and Italian customs authorities have integrated their systems. This helps expedite the exchange of documents, including certification of food safety and health. Mobile applications have also been used to check electronic seals and identify any tampering,' she adds. Finally, Metwally underscores the financial aspect, noting, "Financing these projects will require a blend of mechanisms." This suggests the need for a multi-pronged approach, potentially involving government investment, public-private partnerships (PPPs), and attracting foreign direct investment (FDIs). The strategic embrace of Ro-Ro shipping lines marks a pivotal step in Egypt's ambition to solidify its standing as a leading global logistics hub. The tangible benefits already witnessed, such as the significant reduction in shipping times and costs on the Damietta-Trieste route, underscore the transformative potential of this mode of transport. © 2020-2023 Arab Finance For Information Technology. Final trial runs for RoRo ferries begin on Zuari river
Panaji: Both the roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) ferries commissioned by the river navigation department (RND) were released into the Zuari river for trial runs. The vessels, designed to enhance inter-river connectivity and decongest road traffic, are undergoing final-stage trials and technical refinements ahead of their official launch. RND officials confirmed that the trials are scheduled to continue over the coming week to ensure full operational readiness. 'The modifications and rectifications to these vessels will go on for the next week before their final run. This needs to be done for perfect operations,' said RND director Vikram Rajebhosale. He further added that, for the first vessel, a Singapore-based engineer is expected to oversee gearbox adjustments . The second vessel, which encountered a display system issue, was resolved, with programming of its thrusters currently under way. The construction of the ferries is being executed on a build-and-operate basis. While the RND set a final deadline of May 1 for completion, the launch saw several setbacks, impacting the schedule and pushing the date to May 15. TOI reported earlier that the final outfitting and the installation of additional safety railings for passengers were completed, and following the completion of painting works, the two RoRo ferries were lowered into the water at the Loutolim shipyard one by one. The next phase involved alignment, engine work, and fitting of the propeller shaft on the vessel, which was accomplished last week.
