What to know ahead of St. Patrick's Parade Weekend in Holyoke?
HOLYOKE, Mass (WWLP) – The big weekend is finally here, families from all over flock to Holyoke to celebrate the Irish culture. 'I'm looking forward to a great family friendly day in the city of Holyoke,' said Holyoke Police Chief Brian Keenan. A year's worth planning comes down to this one weekend, parade weekend in Holyoke. 'We come together and not only celebrate the culture of our Irish brothers and sisters, but also the culture of friendship,' said Holyoke Mayor Joshua Garcia. But before the parade even kicks off, the monumental weekend begins with the Holyoke St. Patrick's Road Race. The first event to bring the community together for the celebrations. 'One of the things I've always look forward to is shooting the gun to start the road race so I'm very excited to do that. It'll be a fun experience for sure,' said the 2025 Holyoke Grand Colleen, Moira Reardon. With a goal for everyone to have an enjoyable weekend when it comes to the Road Race and the Parade, the City of Holyoke has a few reminders for those attending both events, especially for when it comes to road closures. For safety, many roads will be closed throughout the weekend for the road race and for the parade. For parade Sunday, a majority of the roads that will be closed are along the parade route. The parade will kick off marching north on Northampton Street before turning right onto Beech street. It will then continue east on Appleton Street before making the final turn onto High Street. The Committee say road closures typically begin an hour or so prior to the 11:10 am start. Exit 15 on I-91 will also be closed by the state police. Holyoke Police also want to remind spectators that backpacks are strongly discouraged, and both large jugs of alcohol and drones are prohibited. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Holyoke prepares safety plan for St. Patrick's Parade
HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) – The 72nd Holyoke St. Patrick's Parade is just around the corner and the city is ensuring everyone stays safe. The Saint Patrick's Committee held their annual public safety meeting on Friday. With hundreds of thousands of people to attend, this is to ensure the parade runs as smoothly as possible. The committee met with local law enforcement, fire departments, and city officials at the Elks Lodge, to finalize a safety plan for the Road Race on March 22nd and the parade the following day. It's expected that there'll be more than 200 police officers along the parade route. They'll also have paramedics available for any type of medical issue that could happen. Chief of Staff for the committee Jennifer Voyik-Morrison told 22News, 'It's important that they're able to experience the event without worrying that there's some kind of, you know, something that could happen.' Brian Keenan with the Holyoke Police Department told 22News, 'We are the eyes and ears of public safety. And if you attend the parade or the road race and you see something, police say something.' If you see anything unusual at the road race or parade and would like to report it, you'll be able to find a nearby police officer at any intersection or busy spot. If you're unable to attend the parade in-person, you can watch it right here on 22News on March 23rd. Mrs. Mitchell's Public House holds St. Patrick's Parade fundraiser
HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) – A restaurant in Holyoke held a fundraiser on Saturday for the upcoming St. Patrick's Parade. Mrs. Mitchell's Public House hosted a fundraiser in collaboration with the St. Patrick's Committee of Holyoke, donating 20% of all food orders to the upcoming parade. Who won Holyoke's Battle of the Bars? Families sat down for pancakes and bacon all to support one of the city's largest events. 22News spoke with the President of the Parade Committee, who told us how much the restaurant has supported the cause. 'Orla has been supportive of our crew for many, many years,' said Parade Committee President John Beaulieu. 'With the breakfast she does during Road Race weekend, parade weekend. We really, really appreciate her and her family for stepping up and doing this.' Orla Mitchell opened this location just one year ago, serving Irish classics Tuesday through Sunday. One of the members of this year's Colleen Court described what it meant to bring the community together just before the parade. 'It definitely is a very exciting time and it's great to see so many familiar faces come out and support this one fundraiser for the Parade Committee,' said Abigail Huebner of the Colleen Court. 'And just being a part of it is so great, seeing everybody here.' In just two weeks, 400,000 people will line the city streets to watch floats roll down the streets of Holyoke. While the parade is the main attraction, Holyoke Colleen Court member Erin O'Donnell said there's something else to cherish about March 23. 'I think it's really more of the experience of going to the parade than it is watching the actual parade,' O'Donnell said. 'It's just fun to come together as a city and celebrate our Irish culture.' For those who won't be attending in person, you will be able to watch full coverage of this year's Holyoke St. Patrick's Parade here on 22News.
