Smart City Morocco: A Roadmap for Resilient, Inclusive, and Tech-Driven African Cities

Marrakech – From May 21 to 23, Morocco hosted Smart City Morocco RoadShow & Expo 2025/2030, a pivotal event in the journey toward smart, sustainable urban development. Jointly organized by Université Mohammed VI Polytechnique (UM6P), Casa Events & Animation, and the FIWARE Foundation, the initiative marked a dynamic convergence of innovation, research, and collaboration, driving forward the transformation of Moroccan and African cities. Held across Casablanca, Rabat, and Benguerir, this mobile forum served as a platform for cross-sector dialogue, technological demonstration, and inclusive policymaking. In alignment with the aspirations of King Mohammed VI, the event embraced the vision of resilient, connected, and equitable urban environments, all while preparing for the global spotlight of the FIFA World Cup 2030, which Morocco will co-host with Spain and Portugal. The RoadShow kicked off in Casablanca with the 9th edition of Casablanca Smart City, themed 'Smart NexGen Cities: Innover pour une métropole durable et inclusive.' Reinforcing Morocco's role as a continental hub for smart city innovation This edition spotlighted smart mobility, large-scale infrastructure management, and civic participation. Two standout initiatives — the Casablanca Smart City Hackathon and the Village des Startups — provided fertile ground for entrepreneurs, developers, and innovators to propose and showcase solutions aimed at enhancing urban life. Rabat took center stage for the FIWARE Global Summit, hosted for the first time outside the European Union. Taking place on UM6P's Rabat campus, this segment welcomed tech leaders from companies such as Telefonica, AWS, NEC, Mitsubishi Electronics, Red Hat, and Libelium, alongside international delegations. Discussions focused on Open Source standards, digital interoperability, cybersecurity, and AI applications in public governance, reinforcing Morocco's role as a continental hub for smart city innovation. The RoadShow culminated in Benguerir with the African Smart Cities Forum, a gathering of policymakers, academics, and urban practitioners. The forum addressed structural transformation, youth employability, public-private-citizen investment models, and digital equity. Welcoming participants to the final stage, the President of UM6P delivered a forward-looking keynote, encapsulating the event's vision. 'This Roadshow was conceived as a space for d He highlighted UM6P's role as a bridge between scientific research and societal impact, underlining the importance of projects like the Digital Twin Smart Campus @UM6P, developed in collaboration with NVIDIA, Dell, and Akila. Need for bottom-up collaboration In a significant policy-oriented intervention during the closing ceremony in Benguerir, Younes Sekkouri, Morocco's Minister of Economic Inclusion, Small Business, Employment, and Skills, called for smart cities to become a national and local governance priority. He emphasized the importance of bottom-up collaboration involving NGOs, corporations, startups, and institutions, noting that integrating smart city strategies into formal policy frameworks is crucial for unlocking long-term resources and impact. As Morocco prepares to introduce a new labor code supporting remote work and flexible employment, the Minister positioned smart cities as critical enablers of a more adaptive and inclusive labor ecosystem. The Smart City Morocco RoadShow & Expo 2025/2030 embodied a powerful message: the future of African cities must be co-created through inclusive governance, interdisciplinary collaboration, and grounded technological innovation. With institutions like UM6P and committed policymakers like Minister Sekkouri at the helm, Morocco is not just preparing for global events; it is laying the foundation for a new, citizen-centered urban era. Gillam celebrates Construction Safety Week at new Golf Canada Headquarters

Nothing you do today is as important as going home to your family and loved ones, reads the Gillam sign as you pull into the new Golf Canada Headquarters job site. From May 5 to 9, Gillam and League of Champions hosted a Road Show to showcase Construction Safety Week at Gillam job sites in the Greater Toronto Area, Waterloo, and Barrie, including the new Golf Canada Headquarters site located at 19499 Main Street, Caledon. League of Champions (LOC) is a not-for-profit volunteer organization founded in 2016 that advocates for safety by inspiring leaders to commit, collaborate, and take action to improve health and safety culture through education, promotion, and recognition, which leads to safer construction workplaces in Ontario. Craig Lesurf, president of Gillam Group and founder of League of Champions, says people should recognize Safety Day daily. 'Every week is safety week, however sometimes you've got to talk about something that you normally take for granted,' said Lesurf. In one month this year, there were 28 critical injuries, and one fatality in all of Ontario, explained Lesurf. His goal is to lower that number. Lesurf explained that many of these injuries were from complacency and things that were easily preventable if people began paying attention. Gillam and the League of Champions are trying to change that. 'It's about setting expectations and safety culture. I care about everybody, and I think they know it,' said Lesurf. 'At the end of the day, I never want to have a conversation with anybody about an injury, or a fatality. I've never in 38 years, and I certainly don't want to do it ever in my lifetime, that's why I do this.' Everybody signs the LOC's Jersey of Courage at the event with their family name to simulate a contract. As Lesurf explained, 'Because it's on a contract, you're going to make the commitment to work safe ever yday.' This year's theme for the Road Show was Plan, Own, Commit. 'You want to plan your work, own your actions, and commit to doing it right,' explained Lesurf. Brad Humenjuk, Corporate Health and Safety Manager for Gillam, says that through this week, they're trying to bring safety to the forefront of the workplace. 'It's mostly the trades that put the stuff together for us and we have to thank them,' said Humenjuk. 'We have to be appreciative to them, we put on a luncheon, we do speeches, we advocate for safety, we just want to make sure that everyone's looking after each other.' He says that Gillam tries to instill the message at the front of its construction sites into every team member to try to combat the problems that arise with routine activity and complacency at job sites. 'Gillam has the biggest culture I've ever experienced in my life,' said Humenjuk. 'If we ever do have a situation, everyone's all-hands-on-deck, everyone seems to always want to help each other, everyone is all engaged, everyone seems to be interconnected, and there's almost like a family integration within this company.' Events varied from site to site and included food and/or refreshments, stretch and flex exercises, toolbox talks, presentations, demonstrations, contests, competitions and guest speakers. 2026 is set as the completion year for the new Golf Canada Headquarters.

Clemson basketball coach Brad Brownell on Ian Schieffelin joining the football team

Clemson basketball coach Brad Brownell on Ian Schieffelin joining the football team When Ian Schieffelin announced his switch from basketball to football last week, one person who wasn't caught off guard was his former head coach. According to reports from The Clemson Insider, at IPTAY's Road Show event in Greenville, Clemson basketball coach Brad Brownell shared that Schieffelin's love for football started long before his days as a Tiger. In fact, it dates back to Grayson High School in Georgia, where he lined up on the gridiron before ever making a name for himself on the hardwood. "He's always loved football," Brownell said. "And he loves Clemson. The chance to stay here and be part of the program in a new way — I know that really appeals to him." Now it's official: Schieffelin is a member of the Clemson football team and will play tight end in 2025. Thanks to NCAA rules, athletes can switch sports within their five-year eligibility window — and with four years of basketball behind him, Schieffelin has one season left to give football a shot. Brownell thinks people may underestimate what he brings to the field. "He's a much better athlete than most folks realize," Brownell said. "His legs are massive, he's incredibly strong, and he's probably a little faster than people expect. I think he can run in the 4.8 range." Schieffelin, a second-team All-ACC selection this past season, helped lead Clemson to 27 wins and an Elite Eight appearance — the program's deepest NCAA Tournament run since 1980. He finished his basketball career with over 1,000 points and ranks seventh in school history in rebounds. But Brownell also made it clear this decision came with a cost. "People need to understand — he's walking away from a lot," Brownell said. "I don't know if he's an NBA guy, but he absolutely could've made serious money playing overseas. He's giving that up for a chance to try something new." The NIL era of college sports makes the money less of a hit, but there is still likely a hit. Money clearly didn't dictate this decision from Schieffelin, but he's definitely still getting paid. It will be an interesting saga to keep an eye on.
