Expect traffic delays in Dubai as work begins on the new Metro Blue Line - What's On
If you frequently drive around Dubai, you might want to plan your routes carefully as road diversions are now in place as construction for the Dubai Metro Blue Line gets underway. Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has officially announced temporary traffic changes. A post on X from the RTA read: 'RTA announces traffic diversions in Mirdif, coinciding with the beginning of construction works on the Dubai Metro Blue Line. The Blue Line will connect nine key areas across Dubai, including International City, Dubai Silicon Oasis, Academic City, Mirdif, and Dubai Creek Harbour, creating an essential link between Dubai International Airport (DXB) and the fast-growing parts of the city. Once completed, it's set to serve more than one million residents. #RTA announces traffic diversions in Mirdif, coinciding with the beginning of construction works on the Dubai Metro Blue Line. Please plan your trip in advance and use alternative routes to ensure a smooth and seamless commute. #YourComfortMatters — RTA (@rta_dubai) July 15, 2025 Where are the diversions happening? The diversions include closing the roundabout intersection between 5th and 8th Street near City Centre Mirdif, with a diversion from 5th to 8th towards City Centre Mirdif, and vice versa from 8th to 5th Steet towards Algeria Street. Providing alternative access road to the parking area for mall visitors, with a U-turn for residents near Ghoroob Square for traffic flow coming from City Centre Mirdif Street. Why the disruption is worth it The Dubai Metro Blue Line, first announced in November 2023, is one of the biggest infrastructure projects currently underway in the emirate. Spanning 30km, the new line will feature 14 stations — including three interchange stations where passengers can connect with the existing Red and Green lines. With parts of Dubai expanding rapidly, the Blue Line will not only ease road congestion but also provide sustainable, efficient, and affordable transport options for residents and visitors alike. There's no official completion date yet, but once operational, the Blue Line is expected to significantly enhance the city's public transport network — making temporary traffic headaches a worthwhile trade-off. RTA Conducts Field Testing in China for 2025 Dubai Self-Driving Transport Challenge
Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has conducted field evaluations in China as part of the 4th Dubai World Challenge for Self-Driving Transport 2025, which offers a total prize of USD $3 million. The RTA technical team visited Guangzhou, Xi'an, Guiyang, and Suzhou to observe real-world testing of self-driving technologies submitted by competing consortia. The visit had four main objectives: To carry out technical and operational assessments of autonomous vehicles based on challenge criteria and international safety standards. To evaluate each company's technology and readiness through direct observation. To inspect operational environments, including factories and control centres, and establish potential strategic partnerships. To define the next phase of the Challenge by reviewing test results and deployment readiness for Dubai. Five autonomous vehicle types were tested: a Robotaxi, two Robobuses, a Roboboat, and an autonomous logistics vehicle. RTA developed a structured methodology for the trials, which were divided into three categories: Standstill Tests: These assessed safety systems, sensor coverage, emergency response features, and mobile application integration while vehicles remained stationary. These assessed safety systems, sensor coverage, emergency response features, and mobile application integration while vehicles remained stationary. Mixed Traffic Tests: Conducted on public roads and port environments, these examined real-time functions such as speed adjustment, traffic signal handling, and navigation. Conducted on public roads and port environments, these examined real-time functions such as speed adjustment, traffic signal handling, and navigation. Dedicated Tests: Focused on controlled scenarios like pedestrian interaction, start-stop capability, and remote operation features. The evaluations were led by RTA's nine-member technical team and advisory jury, in collaboration with consultants FEV and Arthur D. Little. This initiative is part of the build-up to the Dubai World Congress for Self-Driving Transport, scheduled for 24–25 September 2025. The event will bring together global experts in mobility and autonomy, aligning with Dubai's target of transforming 25% of all city trips into autonomous journeys by 2030.
