Glimmerglass Festival prepares for 50th season
COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – A world class opera and musical theater company located in Cooperstown is celebrating its 50th birthday.
Preparations for the 50th anniversary season of the Glimmerglass Festival are well underway.
Destined to Glimmerglass: The 50th Anniversary Campaign set a goal of raising $5 million ahead of the season. So far, it has completed well over 80% of that goal.
The festival plans to use the money to invest in a new artistic perspective as well as workshops, presentations, partnerships, and its apprenticeship program.
Artistic and General Director Rob Ainsley says part of the campaign's initiative is to cement and celebrate the festival as a destination and economic driver for the whole region.
Ainsley says the upcoming season is both exhilarating and important.
'If I had to design one dream season in my life, it would look like the 50th anniversary season we're about to do. I think it is going to be so memorable and so special,' said Ainsley.
Ainsley says it will be a celebration from opening night to closing night.
Glimmerglass puts on four special performances each summer, three operas and one work of musical theater.
This year it is presenting Tosca, Sunday in the Park with George, and The Rake's Progress. It will also be home to the world premiere of The House on Mango Street.
