‘Dream come true': London, Ont. umpire selected to work Little League World Series
Rob Macdonald of London, Ont. is the only Canadian headed to Williamsport, PA. to umpire the Little League World Series. CTV's Brent Lale reports. Umpire Rob Macdonald of London, Ont. is headed to Williamsport, PA. to represent Canada at the upcoming Little League World Series (LLWS). 'It is absolutely a dream come true,' said Macdonald. The 35-year-old math teacher with the Thames Valley District School Board was chosen by the international selection committee as the only Canadian to work the tournament. 'It's something I've been working towards since I was 11, 12 years old,' said Macdonald. 'When I got the letter and got the call, it was just, 'Is this actually happening here?'' Macdonald has worked the Junior Little League World Series in Taylor, Mich., but this is another level. The event is televised on TSN in Canada and ESPN in the U.S., and draws millions of viewers annually. (Brent Lale/CTV News London) 'It's one thing that I've always wanted to do, just be able to represent my country,' said Macdonald. 'I've been able to represent my province, but this is only the second time getting to represent Canada. The first time was a couple of years ago at the Junior Little League World Series, but this is just on a magnified scale to that.' The tournament has 20 teams, 10 from the U.S. and 10 more international teams. 'The Little League is basically like pro ball on a small field,' said Macdonald. 'I've been down there before just to watch. Some of these kids, the way they field the ball, the way they throw the ball, it's like watching the Major Leagues on a 60-ft field.' This is the 25th year Macdonald has been wearing the umpire gear. He got his start in the Hamilton area, keeping the family tradition of officiating. (Brent Lale/CTV News London) 'This means is the world to me as my grandfather started volunteering for Stony Creek Optimist Little League in 1958 or 1959,' he said. 'We've had a Macdonald volunteering at Stony Creek ever since. You're not going to get good without good mentors. I've had a lot over my 25 years of umpiring, but, just like Steve Meyer (Umpired LLWS in 2010), Mike Marasco, Hal Barton out of the Hamilton area. Just phenomenal, phenomenal mentors and helping me get to get to where I am.' Fellow umpire Mark Harris has known and worked with Macdonald for a few years. 'I know him to be a dedicated umpire and has a very good passion for the game,' said Harris. 'He loves what he does. He's good on both plate and bases at getting in the right position at the right time and makes the calls correctly.' His dad, mom, brother and possibly cousins and uncles will be headed to watch him on the big stage. Years of dedication has finally paid off. 'We work our way up through working league games into district provincials, national championships or regionals and then from there, we get evaluated,' said Macdonald. 'If we're deemed good enough, we can put our name in to, to get any of the seven World Series events for Little League.' He got the big one, and he's ready to soak it all in. 'It's finally, finally, finally going to happen,' he said.

Londoner among 3 Canadians to umpire at this year's Little League Baseball World Series
A baseball umpire from London, Ont., is among three Canadians selected to umpire at the 2025 Little League World Series tournament in Williamsport, Pa., this summer. Rob Macdonald, 35, will take the field at one of seven World Series events in August, along with 19 other umpires from around the world. It's an opportunity that's been more than two decades in the making, said Macdonald "I am so excited, this is something I've been working toward since I was 11 or 12 years old," he said. "Honestly, [I'm] overjoyed that the people who have worked with me over that time that I've seen make it there, I get to join the ranks with them." Baseball umpires are responsible for officiating and enforcing game rules, while making judgment calls. The selection process to become a World Series umpire for the Little League is rigorous and involves years of volunteering at regional, provincial and national tournaments. The Little League's international selection committee considers each applicant and selects high-performing umpires to officiate each post-season tournament, before being screened one final time, said the Little League in a press release. The Little League World Series is an annual international event held in the United States for children aged 10 to 12 years old, and it's a big deal: the tournament is televised on ESPN and in 2024 drew 3.5 million viewers. The announcement is especially heartwarming for Macdonald, who is originally from Hamilton, because umpiring has been in his family since the 1950s, when his grandfather first started doing it at the Stoney Creek Optimist Little League. It's a tradition that kept up through Macdonald's dad, his brother, cousins and himself. But Macdonald's interest in officiating became stronger around 2001, when his dad took over as president of the Little League and encouraged him to pursue umpiring, he said. "It just worked out. I was good at memorizing rules and just gained the confidence and worked my way up through the ranks," said Macdonald, who will work with players as young as 11. "I love getting to work with new people all the time and the ability to travel across the country. I also love encouraging and mentoring younger umpires, people who were like me when I was that young, and seeing them progress." A 'once in a lifetime' opportunity It's a great honour for Little League umpires to take the field internationally after spending many years learning the ins and outs of baseball, said Lance Van Auken, a former umpire who also served as vice president of the Little League and is now retired. "A player who makes it to the Little League World Series as part of a team, they're work for a few months to get ready. By contrast, an umpire will be working for decades just to get a shot at making it. It's really a once-in-a-lifetime thing," he said. Macdonald's selection has brought immense pride to his mentor, Stephen Meyer, who also umpired the Little League's World Series in 2010. "He's worked very hard and has shown to be an exceptional umpire. I'm very proud to see someone coming up from the grassroots level getting selected to such a prestigious event," said Meyer, describing Macdonald as someone who's always eager to learn more and advance. With his patience in working with pre-teen players and positive attitude, Macdonald is the perfect ump for the World Series, said Meyer. "One of the things I always drilled into Rob is, you have to treat every game as if it is Little League World Series." Macdonald, a high school math teacher in London, said he devotes his time to umpiring for the love of baseball and desire to help young players grow into strong athletes. He looks forward to representing southwestern Ontario at the tournament, he said.

Southern Silver Returns 8.9 metres of 222g/t AgEq in South Skarn Drilling, Cerro Las Minitas Project Mexico
Vancouver, British Columbia--(Newsfile Corp. - February 26, 2025) - Southern Silver Exploration Corp. (TSXV: SSV) (OTCQX: SSVFF) (the "Company" or "Southern Silver") reports today that results from its Q4 '24 "proof of concept" drilling has extended silver-polymetallic mineralization both laterally and down dip of the South Skarn deposit on the Cerro Las Minitas project, Durango, Mexico. Six core holes totalling 2395 metres were completed as part of the drill program. Drilling tested gaps within the current block model, lateral extensions of the mineralization and successfully intersected thick intervals of mineralized skarn in a hole which tested the depth projection of the main mineralized shoot of the South Skarn deposit. Drilling highlights from hole 24CLM-198 include: a 0.5 metre interval (est. TT.) averaging 154g/t Ag, 0.2g/t Au, 5.6% Cu and 0.1% Zn (834g/t AgEq) within a 8.9 metre interval (est. TT.) averaging 97g/t Ag, 0.1g/t Au, 0.7% Cu, 0.1% Pb and 0.7% Zn (222g/t AgEq); and a 4.0 metre interval (est. TT) averaging 81g/t Ag, 0.2g/t Au, 0.1g/t Cu, 0.4% Pb and 3.9% Zn (267g/t AgEq); Strong gold-enrichment is also identified in several hangingwall intercepts in 24CLM-198 correlating to zones of mineralization outboard of the more typical, silver-enriched polymetallic mineralization of the main skarn horizon located adjacent to the central monzonite intrusion. Highlights include: a 0.9 metre interval (down hole) averaging 124g/t Ag, 5.2g/t Au and 4.0% Pb (682g/t AgEq); and a 5.1 metre interval (down hole) averaging 7g/t Ag, 1.8g/t Au (167g/t AgEq) Figure 1: Plan view of the distribution of the Cerro Las Minitas deposits. Note the South Skarn deposit on the eastern side of the Central Monzonite intrusion (in purple). To view an enhanced version of this graphic, please visit: Drilling also returned a 3.5 metre (est. TT) sulphide skarn interval in drill hole 24CLM-199 representing an approximate 175 metre lateral step out from the skarn intercepts in drill hole CLM-198 and returned shallow gold-enriched oxidized intercepts in several other drill holes. Vice President of Exploration, Rob Macdonald stated "This recent drilling successfully demonstrates both the lateral and down dip extensions of relatively shallow mineralization around the South Skarn deposit. Similar shallow targets are identified around both the Bocona and North Felsite deposits. Mineralization also remains open at depth, particularly on the eastern side of the Cerro which with further exploration, can continue to add high margin mineralization early in the modelled production scenario." The Company also reports that work on the Cerro Las Minitas project continues advancing numerous upside opportunities identified subsequent to the July 2024 PEA, while also derisking and advancing the project with the commencement of baseline data collection, hydrology, geotechnical, archaeological and land surveys and studies. As currently modelled, the Cerro Las Minitas project features a large-scale underground mining operation with robust project economics and high gross revenues in a well located and mining friendly jurisdiction in southeast Durango, Mexico. For more information on the details of the current economic assessment of the Cerro Las Minitas project please refer to Southern Silver's news release dated June 10, 2024.
