St Kilda's Alex Theatre facing uncertain future after $7m listing
An iconic St Kilda stage that's hosted Rob Mills, Pia Miranda, Gyton Grantley among a roll call of Australian theatre greats is on the market — and it may not stay a theatre. The Alex Theatre, at 135 Fitzroy St, has been a creative cornerstone since it was transformed from the George Cinemas into a two-stage performance venue in 2015. In the decade since, it has become synonymous with the suburb's arts revival, hosting musicals, comedy, cabaret and the St Kilda Film Festival. But the historic venue, spread across 1484sq m within the heritage-listed George Apartments building is now for sale with $6m-$7m price hopes. Colliers Melbourne East's Lucas Socio said the combination of cultural cachet and a prime St Kilda location would attract interest from wealthy individuals, arts institutions and owner-occupiers. 'It's a truly unique opportunity to secure a fully operational performing arts venue in one of Melbourne's most vibrant suburbs,' Mr Soccio said. The property's two purpose-built theatres seat 500 and 291 patrons respectively, with a rehearsal studio, bar and lounge, and office space also on site. The site could remain a stage for live performance or be reimagined for hospitality, events or other uses, subject to council approval. Some of the Alex's most prominent performances have been the musical Sexercise in 2015, Cruel Intentions: The Musical, and Puffs — a Harry Potter parody play, which starred Rob Mills. It's also given a platform to emerging talent. 'It's part of the fabric of St Kilda, people have a real emotional connection to it,' one industry source said. 'That kind of nostalgia can make buyers more aggressive in today's market.' The Alex occupies a prized position less than 6km from the Melbourne CBD and a short walk from the beach, Luna Park and the Palais Theatre. Expressions of interest for The Alex Theatre close at 2pm, August 22.

The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives season 3: Everything to know
After seeing the first season of The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives—actually, after seeing the first episode of The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, it was clear that Disney+ had struck reality TV gold. Not only were the Mormon, formerly Mormon, and Mormon-ish cast members famous on TikTok and involved in—or tangentially related to—a swinging scandal, but they somehow all also have drama within their friendship group and within their romantic and familial relationships. More went on in the first couple of episodes (An arrest! A pregnancy reveal! Someone's husband having a porn addiction! Fruity Pebbles being used during sex!?) than happens in an entire season of some reality shows. With season one a hit, the show was renewed for a second season. Season two premiered 15 May with all episodes hitting Disney+ at the same time. So, now the question is: Will Secret Lives return again? It has to, right? Great news! The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives is coming back for a third season. Or, perhaps a season two, part two? Either way, more episodes are on the way. In October, about a month after the first season premiered, Hulu picked up the series for 20 more episodes, as reported by Deadline. "There was a philosophical question raised in season 1 which was 'Can #MomTok survive this?' The answer unequivocally is yes! Spring 2025 get your dirty sodas ready!" said Rob Mills, Disney's Executive Vice President of Unscripted and Alternative Entertainment. Now, season two has premiered with 10 episodes, which means that there are still 10 episodes left in the order, presumably for season three—unless they decide to call it season two, part B or something like that. To look at another Hulu reality show for reference: The Kardashians was originally ordered as 40 episodes. These were then split up into four seasons with two seasons airing per year. (That show has now gone on to have six seasons.) This is just an educated guess at this point, but there could be more Secret Lives coming out this year. Get your MomTok-themed charcuterie boards ready! (If you've seen season twi, you know what I mean.) The first season premiered in September 2024. Now, the second has come out only eight months later and we know that 10 more episodes have already been picked up. If Secret Lives follows a similar release model to the one The Kardashians has usually followed, the third season would premiere this fall. (There was a longer gap between the fifth and sixth seasons of The Kardashians, though, so... don't hold me to this.) Whether MomTok will survive this, obviously. Really, though, with it being an ensemble reality show about friendships and personal lives, it will continue to be about drama, drama, drama. And with the cast now being reality stars, sometimes that drama is a little fourth-wall breaking, too, like with Miranda trying to rejoin the group this season at what some members thought was a very convenient time. Who will stay in their marriage? Who will break up? How will the MomTok clique split into sub-cliques? What other friends might join the group? We'll be watching the next 10 episodes—and hopefully more?!—to find out. Seasons 1 and 2 of The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives are available on Disney+ now

Reality music TV survivors lift the lid on behind-the-scenes hell
Popular entertainer Rob Mills still feels 'really sad' for his younger self who momentarily contemplated taking his life after he was eliminated from the first season of Australian Idol. The singer and actor recalled suffering a panic attack when he was mobbed by fans and put in a headlock one night on the Gold Coast after his exit from the reality television juggernaut in 2003. To escape the hysterical crowd, he jumped into the car of a stranger who dropped him at his hotel. Back in the safety of his room and looking at the open door to the balcony, Mills 'had that split second moment of like, you could just end it. You don't have to worry about the panic or the crazy anymore.' He raced to the door and slammed it shut. Mills, an R U OK? ambassador, shares the harrowing experience in a new LISTNR podcast The Moment It Changed: Touchdown, that lifts the lid on the exploitation of contestants and the often harrowing aftermath of life after starring on the mega-rating dream factories of Australian Idol, The X Factor and The Voice. 'I still get emotional thinking about it. Yeah, I still get really sad for that kid. He was just so scared,' Mills says on the podcast. 'And now I go, what a life I've had. What experiences I've got to have because of just knowing that, 'Oh, you don't have to do that.' 'It still gets me like, lucky for me, I know who I am. I have a very good sense of self. I've got great friends, great self-worth. 'But I think it's just when I think back to that kid, I go, 'Ah, that poor kid. He didn't know.' And no one was there to go, 'Hey mate, it's gonna be a bit shit for a bit.'' The three-part series features past winners Casey Donovan, Dami Im and Karise Eden and contestants Bella Ferraro and Katie Underwood as well as Idol judges Mark Holden and Ian 'Dicko' Dickson. Like Mills, Donovan was signed and then quickly dropped by Idol labels BMG and Sony even as inaugural winner Guy Sebastian was being presented with a $1 million cheque for the record-breaking sales of his debut album. After being spat out by the music industry machine in 2007, then 18-year-old Donovan found work as a receptionist of a medical centre. When the media discovered her day job, she was cast as the 'forgotten Idol.' Now she is one of Australia's most popular musical theatre stars. 'People would come in and ... 'Aren't you Casey Donovan? I voted for you. Why are you here?' And I'd get this pity look ... Like, I need to earn money to live,' she says. Eden reveals the devastating toll to her mental health after winning the first series of The Voice in 2012. The shy, vulnerable 19-year-old had endured a harrowing childhood as a homeless youth and state ward and struggled to deal with overnight fame, particularly when fans who related to her struggle often shared their own devastating stories. She 'spun into a downward spiral' and self-harmed during a post Voice tour when approached by relatives she had never met. Eden entered a mental health unit for treatment and the tour was cancelled. Dami Im puts the spotlight on the manipulations of her 'backstory' behind the scenes of The X Factor in 2013 and her struggle for creative control of her recording career at Sony before she finally left the label in 2020.
