History through food: A look at the Robards Cookbook
HENDERSON COUNTY, Ky. (WEHT) — People come together for many reasons, but it's often at the table sharing food. It's hard to make one cookbook stand out, but one Kentucky community had the right idea – turning theirs into a piece of history. Robards, with a population of 445 residents, is nestled in southeastern Henderson County, named after J.D. Roberts who built a combination store and house in 1867. A community built around faith and food, also has it's own cookbook. Patty Sellers is one of the many who put a recipe into the cookbook that is over 40 years old. Some of the recipes date back nearly 160 years. It's not just recipes to the community, it's also a town time capsule. Some of the old business buildings have made it through the times such as Rays Store, now Sugg's General Store, and the Busby's Garage sign still stands tall. Many of the sights are familiar to Sondra Eakins-Neel. At 15 years old, she drew many of the pictures inside the book thanks to her mother. Not all recipes in the book are meant to be cooked. Some offer life advice for the good times or when times are rough. Some are written poetically and others at times, just a repeat. Some families hold recipes close to their hearts. Even the Robards Cookbook doesn't give it all away. Next time when looking into the history of an old town, see what locals have going on in the oven and you may even get a side dish of gossip.
