‘Invincible' Video Game Set as Skybound Launches First In-House Game Studio, Quarter Up
'Invincible' studio Skybound Entertainment has launched its first-ever in-house video game studio, Quarter Up. The new division's first game is the recently announced 3v3 tag fighting game 'Invincible VS,' a title set in the world of Amazon Prime Video's popular adult animated superhero series created based on the comics penned by Skybound's Robert Kirkman. More from Variety Adult Animation, Anime's Rising Influence Lead WIA's 2025 Annecy World Summit Lineup (EXCLUSIVE) Skybound Acquires Digital Talent Firm Nine Four Entertainment Skybound Entertainment Appoints Skarphéðinn Guðmundsson as CEO of Iceland's Sagafilm (EXCLUSIVE) 'Invincible VS' is described as 'a brutal tournament-quality 3v3 tag fighting game that lets players become a superhero in the bloodiest fight in the universe.' The game will feature fan-favorite 'Invincible' superheroes Mark Grayson (Invincible), Thula, Atom Eve, Bulletproof and more characters in an original single-player story from the creative team behind Amazon's 'Invincible' TV series. The game, which was first teased during Xbox Games Showcase on Sunday ahead of Skybound's Quarter Up reveal Monday, is slated to launch in 2026. 'I think about our team as a group of fighting-game fans making games for the fighting-game community, and we're trying to create a game that matches what people want,' Skybound Games chief Chris Paulson told Variety. 'And it doesn't have to be this huge game that costs $100, it can be something more focused. And so we don't really think about double A or triple A or whatever, we think about making a game for an audience, and we're playing the game with the people that are going to be fans.' Headquartered in Los Angeles, Quarter Up is made up of more than 40 developers who are alums from gaming studios including Activision Blizzard, Amazon Game Studios, Double Helix Games, Riot Games, Naughty Dog, Netflix and more. The team's mission is to 'redefine the fighting game genre by being at the center of combat, presentation and passion,' but they're keeping quiet on what other projects they're planning beyond 'Invincible VS.' 'We're hyper focused on this game right now,' 'Invincible VS' executive producer Mike Willette, who previously worked on Double Helix Games' 2013 title 'Killer Instinct,' told Variety. 'We want this game to amaze people. We want them to fall in love with the characters and the world of 'Invincible.' There's so much rich lore and badass-ness that we just want people to get their chance to play with us.' But as they move forward making other games for Skybound, Willette noted how Quarter Up being an in-house gaming studio has already simplified his usual dev struggles. 'From a developer perspective, it's just amazing that you have access to all these resources,' he said. 'I've worked on projects before where you're begging, borrowing, stealing just to find, 'What is this? Can I get access to this?' Here, it's not a problem. We have decades' worth of stuff to go back through comic-wise and access to the show and the creative team. So for us, couldn't ask for anything better on the dev side.' For now, expect aerial, fast-paced combat, where mastering team synergy would be the key to your victory. The combat in the game isn't flashy, but it's visceral. Simmons and Steven Yeun is strongly recommended by trailer release. Invincible VS is slated to be released across some major platforms in 2026. The players can look forward to unleashing chaos on PlayStation 5, PC, Xbox Cloud Gaming, and even Xbox Series X/S. With the Mortal Kombat Omni-Man guest appearance, the game is already a hit and has some big shoes to fill. But truthfully, it's the fighting game expertise of the game and the direct involvement of Kirkman that sets it apart. If it is executed right, it can be a superhero fighter fans have been waiting for—relentless, packed with personality, and raw.

Invincible VS Is a Tag-Team Brawler Packed With Bloody Superhero Carnage
Microsoft's Xbox Games Showcase had its share of surprises, including a new game from Pokémon developer Game Freak and the ROG Xbox Ally portable handheld. Another surprise is a fighting game featuring characters from the Invincible comic and show. Invincible VS is a 3-vs.-3 tag fighting game featuring characters from the Invincible universe. The trailer showed several characters from the show, including Invincible, Omni-Man, Atom Eve, Rex Splode, Bulletproof, and two Viltrumites—the powerful alien species Omni-Man and Invincible belong to. The game itself has a comic book art style to it, but its action is more along the lines of Mortal Kombat. The fighting is very bloody—which is faithful to the comic and show—but no kind of fatalities were shown in the trailer. There are also a couple of familiar settings from the show. While only a handful of characters were shown in this first glimpse of Invincible VS, there is a wealth of heroes and villains that could be added to the game before it launches. Robert Kirkman's Invincible started as a comic in 2003 and ended its run in 2018. In 2021, an animated series based on the comic made its debut on Amazon Prime Video. The show wrapped up its third season in March and has already been renewed for a fourth season. Skybound Games is publishing Invincible VS with development handled by Quarter Up, an in-house studio led by members of the team that created 2013's Killer Instinct. Invincible VS will be released sometime in 2026 for PC and Xbox Series consoles.

‘Invincible' is Finally Getting Its Own Fighting Game
Stand ready for the arrival of 'Invincible VS,' a bloody tag-team 3v3 fighter coming to PC and consoles in 2026. Once it became clear Prime Video's adaptation of Invincible was a hit, fans and comic co-creator Robert Kirkman started talking more. Not just more seasons, but where else the IP could go, specifically video games. After a mobile game and a visual novel for Atom Eve, the time's come for the series to really get its hands bloody. During the Xbox Games Showcase, Skybound Games and developer Quarter Up unveiled Invincible VS, the franchise's first full video game for consoles and PC. Naturally, it's a fighting game, and players will assemble three-person teams and go head-to-head against other players online. Beyond Mark and his dad Nolan, the roster includes heroes like Atom Eve, Rex Splode, and Bulletproof, plus Viltrumites Thula and Lucan. Some of the TV actors also look to be reprising their roles for the game. According to a press release from Skybound, VS will also feature a single-player story along with competitive and casual multiplayer and Training and Arcade modes. This being Invincible, characters shed a lot of blood as they beat each other into a pulp. Along with the tag-team mechanics of Marvel vs. Capcom (or more recently Marvel Tōkon), it looks like VS is taking inspiration from NetherRealm's Mortal Kombat games in that the fighters all have brutal finishers they can inflict on one another. If Mark can headbutt guys' heads off and Eve can blast them apart, everyone else's are gonna be just as gnarly. But will they top Omni-Man's gruesome train murder used in Mortal Kombat 1? Invincible VS releases in 2026 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.

The Walking Dead nearly didn't feature zombies – other monster was planned
A different monster had been planned for The Walking Dead during its initial pitch - though did not feature for a crucial reason. When pitching the long-running comic book series, creator Robert Kirkman was told the zombies trope was too "normal" of an idea for the series. Kirkman revised the pitch so the flesh-eating monsters at the heart of the series were only minor characters, with another monster planned to take over from the popular fictional villains. A post to the r/TodayILearned Reddit page has since shed light on what the monsters would have been for the series, had Kirkman stuck to his promised second pitch. Despite changing parts of the script to feature the alternate antagonists, Kirkman is believed to have never been keen on the idea, and had no intention of writing such a change. But the project was pitched with a bluff to the audience on what the villain was, which many believe is the reason the project was green-lit. Kirkman then went back over the pitch to remove any reference to the intended monsters. A post to the subreddit reads: "After the initial pitch for The Walking Dead was rejected for being too 'normal', Robert Kirkman revised the pitch so that the zombie virus was caused by aliens to weaken humanity before an invasion. "Kirkman had no intention of ever writing this into the comic, but this pitch was approved." Though The Walking Dead featured no aliens, there was a spin-off comic book series which briefly showcased what the alien-featuring pitch could have turned into. At just six pages long, fans were given a teaser of what could have occurred, though it was cut short as Kirkman ends the spin-off with the words "not to be continued." Though The Walking Dead went on to become an acclaimed comic book with a television show series to follow, fans understood why the initial pitch without alien interference was rejected. One fan took to Reddit and wrote: "The thing is: I get it. Zombies were already overdone. The strength of the Walking Dead is in good character-driven writing, but you can't really pitch 'I'm doing yet another zombie story, but, like, it'll be good!' "I can see why he needed to dress it up with a high-concept hook to get a publisher interested." Another agreed, adding: "I feel like this makes sense for that decade of media. "Having those twists was all the rage in the 2000s, and there was tons of movies, and shows about aliens invading." A third user wrote: "That does sound stupid, but on the other side, the zombie premise had already been kinda boring long before that." The Walking Dead comic ran from October 2003 to July 2019, with a total of 193 issues. The television show of the same name ran from 2010 to 2022, with several spin-offs still broadcast to this day.
