3 dead after shooting at Target in Austin, Texas; suspect arrested
At least three people are dead after a shooting on Aug. 11 outside a Target store in Austin, Texas, authorities said.
Austin Police Department Chief Lisa Davis said in a news briefing that police received a call of a shooting at a Target parking lot at around 2:15 p.m. local time. Davis said the suspect was arrested.
Officials said the suspect fled the scene in a stolen car before crashing that car and stealing another vehicle. Davis said the suspect is 32 years old and has a "mental health history."
Two of the victims were declared dead in the parking lot, while the third person died at a local hospital, Austin-Travis County EMS Chief Robert Luckritz said in the news conference.
In a social media post, Austin Mayor Kirk Watson called the shooting a "cowardly act of gun violence."
"This is a devastating situation, and my heart is with the victims and their families," Watson said. "While this remains an active and ongoing investigation, what I'll say is that this was a sickening, cowardly act of gun violence. I am grateful for the quick response of our APD officers and other first responders and want to thank them for their actions to apprehend the suspect."
