Port Shepstone police arrested a 56-year-old man for impersonating a police officer. Police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said on July 22 at about 18:10, a police officer who was on his way home from work noticed a silver Mercedes Benz with police registration number plates at a mall in Shelly Beach. 'The vehicle was circulated and the registration number was found to belong to a different vehicle. The suspect was approached, searched and found with a fake police appointment certificate, fake firearm, a traffic police reflector jacket, blue lights and a fake Hawks working permit ' said Netshiunda. The suspect is due to appear in the Port Shepstone Magistrate's Court tomorrow (Thursday). Two police constables shot dead in suspected love triangle in KZN

A suspected love triangle within the police ranks ended in tragedy on Thursday night when two Gamalakhe police constables were gunned down outside a home in Port Shepstone. The victims, a 34-year-old male officer and his girlfriend, were reportedly sitting in the man's car outside his house when the mother of his child, also a constable at the Port Shepstone police station, allegedly opened fire at them. Both victims later died at Murchison Hospital, The Witness reports. The incident happened in the Mbayimbayi location, Murchison, Ugu district. A police source said the man was taken to hospital with multiple gunshots while his girlfriend escaped the scene, but was later found nearby by a neighbour and was also taken to hospital where they both died. 'When the man's brother heard gunshots, he rushed out to check and saw his brother being shot at by the mother of his child, who is also a police constable stationed at Port Shepstone police station,' said a police source. 'The suspect was then traced and found in possession of her service pistol without the magazine.' Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed the arrest of a constable in connection with the murders. 'Police in Port Shepstone have arrested a police Constable in connection with the murders of a fellow Constable who is believed to be the father of her child, and another Constable, suspected to be his girlfriend at Murchison location in Mbayimbayi area on Thursday night,' Netshiunda said. 'It is reported that the suspect went to a residence where she found her baby daddy with another woman and opened fire at both of them before leaving the scene of the crime. Both victims were declared dead upon arrival at hospital. The suspect was arrested on Friday and is expected to appear in court on Monday, 21 July 2025,' he said. KZN police warn public of fake accounts impersonating Mkhwanazi

Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has no social media accounts, and all profiles using his name or image on platforms like X, TikTok, and Facebook are fake. Police may pursue legal action against those impersonating the provincial commissioner to promote personal or political agendas. The public is urged not to use the commissioner's image during political marches, as it may send unintended messages and politicise police leadership. Police in KwaZulu-Natal have sounded the alarm over a growing number of fake social media accounts that are impersonating the Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi. The accounts, active on platforms including X (formerly Twitter), TikTok, and Facebook, are using the commissioner's name and photographs without authorisation, misleading the public into believing that the content is being shared by the senior police official himself. KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson, Colonel Robert Netshiunda, has confirmed that the provincial commissioner does not operate any social media accounts and warned that the fake profiles are deceptive and potentially harmful. 'Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi does not have a social media account, and declares that all social media accounts bearing his names and photographs are fake, and that they are being used to deceive the public into believing that it is the Provincial Commissioner communicating via such platforms,' said Netshiunda. Netshiunda said the police are contemplating taking legal steps against those who impersonate the provincial commissioner of KwaZulu-Natal to advance their personal agendas. He further informed the public that those profiles are fake and that neither the police in KwaZulu-Natal nor Mkhwanazi have endorsed such fake accounts. 'The Provincial Commissioner of KwaZulu-Natal would also like to plead with members of the public to refrain from using his photographs during various politically-aligned marches, especially those against the State President,' he said. He said although Mkhwanazi appreciates the support that people have shown towards the work of the police in KwaZulu-Natal, the use of his photographs and names on posters and banners during marches has the potential of sending unintended messages to government, government officials and the international community. Netshiunda said the provincial commissioner of KwaZulu-Natal was against crime and criminals, not leaders in government. Since the beginning of the week, there have been protests across the country in support of Mkhwanazi, who made explosive allegations against police minister Senzo Mchunu and deputy police commissioner for crime detection General Shadrack Sibiya, whom he accused of being in cahoots with criminals. Mchunu and Sibiya have since been placed on 'leave of absence'.

KZN police lunch manhunt for 12 gunmen after CIT van blown up, robbed

A gang of 12 gunmen used explosives to blow up a cash-in-transit (CIT) vehicle in Pietermaritzburg. One of their getaway vehicles was also torched, presumably to destroy evidence. A shootout between the suspects and dRK Tactical Unit officers left one guard wounded. A massive manhunt is under way for 12 people who blew up a cash-in-transit (CIT) vehicle in Murray Road, Pietermaritzburg, on Wednesday night. According to KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda, a security guard sustained multiple gunshot wounds during the incident and was taken to a hospital. The gunmen reportedly made off with two firearms and ammunition, according to police. Private security company, dRK Tactical Response, said one of its units was returning to base via Murray and Oribi Road when the team came across a CIT robbery in progress. It said the scene was chaotic and that multiple gunshots were fired. 'In response, the tactical unit returned fire in self-defence and immediately called for backup,' it said. 'One CIT security guard sustained a gunshot wound to the leg, while the second occupant was found disoriented and traumatised. Both individuals were stabilised on the scene and later transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment,' dRK Tactical Response said. The private security company said preliminary investigations, conducted in coordination with the South African Police Service (SAPS) and other role players, revealed that the suspects were believed to be travelling in three to four vehicles and were heavily armed, including with AK-47 rifles. It said explosives were used to blow up the cash-in-transit vehicle to access the money inside, as well as one of the gunmen's getaway vehicles, presumably to destroy evidence. Further alerts led officers to a reported shooting at Sleungspurt Car Wash. However, by the time police units arrived there, the gunmen had already fled in the direction of the R56, after making off with an undisclosed amount of cash.
