First Star Trek: Starfleet Academy trailer knows not to skimp on the Holly Hunter

Look, if you manage to get Holly Hunter to be the star of your new 'Young adults go to Star Trek school and almost certainly do a ton of smooching' TV show, you use her, right? That's certainly the perspective put forward in the trailer for Paramount+'s new Starfleet Academy, which foregrounds itself with Hunter introducing herself to the first class to enroll at the titular academy in more than a century, and then lets her soothing voice walk viewers through the show's cast of ambitious youths. For the record, that's Sandro Rosta as undeclared human student Caleb Mir, Karim Diané as Klingon science guy Jay-Den Kraag, Kerrice Brooks as first-of-her-kind-at-the-Academy Sam, George Hawkins as wannabe captain Darem Reymi, and Bella Shepherd as admiral's daughter Genesis Lythe. The trailer is also careful to show off plenty of returning faces, including Tig Notaro, reprising her role from Star Trek: Discovery, and Robert Picardo, returning to the series as Star Trek: Voyager's The Doctor. (And if that's not enough fan-service for you, the new Academy also apparently has, like, Choose-Your-Own-Adventure exhibits about some of Starfleet's biggest mysteries; hands up if you paused your video on the one about 'The Fate Of Benjamin Sisko, Emissary Of The Prophets.') That's to say nothing of the guy who merits the big 'end of the trailer' reveal: A whistling Paul Giamatti, who'll be playing the season's villain, Nus Braka, a guy who's part-Klingon, part-Tellurite, all 'guy who wears a lot of rings as a personality statement' Starfleet Academy is being co-showrun by Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau. The series is expected to premiere on Paramount+ some time in early 2026. More from A.V. (Check out that James T. Kirk Pavilion!) We meet the fresh-faced cadets, who 'are the best and brightest from across the galaxy,' she says. 'You will learn the skills that shaped our greatest officers,' she adds, encouraging them to (of course) 'boldly go where no one has gone before.' As the teaser ends, we also get our first glimpse at recurring guest star Paul Giamatti as Nus Braka, who is part Klingon and part Tellarite and is the season's villain with an ominous past connected to one of the cadets, as he ominously whistles the Star Trek theme. Along with Hunter and Giamatti, the cast includes Star Trek veterans Robert Picardo (as Voyager's The Doctor), Tig Notaro (as Discovery's Jett Reno) and Oded Fehr (as Discovery's Admiral Vance). The cadets are played by Sandro Rosta, Karim Diané, Kerrice Brooks, George Hawkins, Bella Shepard and Zoë Steiner. Plus, Gina Yashere (Bob Hearts Abishola) recurs as Commander Lura Thok, a Klingon/Jem'Hadar hybrid who is the chancellor's First Officer and Cadet Master. Starfleet Academy 'introduces viewers to a young group of cadets who come together to pursue a common dream of hope and optimism,' per the official synopsis. 'Under the watchful and demanding eyes of their instructors, they discover what it takes to become Starfleet officers as they navigate blossoming friendships, explosive rivalries, first loves and a new enemy that threatens both the Academy and the Federation itself.' The ‘Star Trek: Starfleet Academy' Trailer Welcomes You Back to School

Star Trek faces an uncertain future at the moment, as shows that helped define its streaming renaissance end one by one, and little is known about what lies on the horizon (especially thanks to current events in our own world). So it's perhaps fitting, then, that the one new show we do know is coming is all about welcoming a new generation back to Star Trek's fundamental ideals after a similar period of uncertainty: Starfleet Academy. To close out today's packed Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Paramount released the first trailer for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. Set in the 32nd century after the events of Star Trek: Discovery, the series will follow the first new class of cadets to enroll at the titular academy in San Francisco in over a century, as the Federation rebuilds and reconnects after the cataclysmic events of 'The Burn' from Discovery's third season. The new trailer, aside from being packed with references to all of Star Trek history (from Academy wing names to courses on figures like Captain Sisko), introduces us to a whole host of new and familiar faces as classes begin. The series will be led by Holly Hunter, who plays Nahla Ake, the captain of the U.S.S. Athena, a long-lived half-Lanthanite (the same humanoid species as Strange New Worlds' Commander Pelia, played by Carol Kane) who also serves as the Academy's chancellor. Among the senior staff at the academy, she'll be joined by Discovery's Tig Notaro and Voyager's Robert Picardo, reprising their roles as Jett Reno and the Emergency Medical Hologram simply known as the Doctor, respectively—they'll also be joined in a guest star capacity by Discovery's Mary Wiseman and Oded Fehr as Sylvia Tilly and Admiral Vance, respectively. One new addition to the campus staff is Gina Yashere's Lura Thok, the Athena's first officer as well as Starfleet Academy's cadet master—fascinatingly, a half-Klingon, half-Jem'Hadar, the genetically engineered footsoldiers of the Dominion from Deep Space Nine. Of course, an academy needs students, and Starfleet Academy will follow a whole host of new recruits making their way through training. Here's the rundown: Even if Starfleet Academy is a school-set series, Star Trek still needs a baddie, and the show will have one in the form of Paul Giamatti, cheekily and mysteriously introduced at the end of the trailer. Giamatti plays Nus Braka, a seedy gang leader (and himself another half-Klingon, this time a Klingon/Tellarite hybrid) who has some ominous connections to one of the new cadets at the academy. The first season of Starfleet Academy is set to begin streaming on Paramount+ in early 2026. The show has already been renewed for a second season. Want more io9 news? Paul Giamatti Transforms into a Klingon Hybrid Villain in STAR TREK: STARFLEET ACADEMY and New Details — GeekTyrant

Ahead of Star Trek 's big Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Entertainment Weekly gave fans a first look at Paul Giamatti as the mysterious villain in the upcoming series Star Trek: Starfleet Academy , and this show is shaping up to be one of the most intriguing Trek entries in years. The series is set in the 32nd century, following the events of Star Trek: Discovery . The galaxy is still recovering from the devastating 'Burn,' which fractured the Federation and sent Starfleet into a long period of isolation. Now, 120 years later, the Academy is opening its doors again, welcoming the first new class of cadets in over a century. Fans can expect to see a diverse lineup of species among the students, along with some familiar faces from across the franchise. Tig Notaro returns as Jett Reno, Oded Fehr as Admiral Vance, and Mary Wiseman is back as Tilly. On top of that, Voyager fans are in for a treat as Robert Picardo will reprise his role as the Emergency Medical Hologram, with co-showrunner Noga Landau teasing: 'Starfleet Academy will continue his story forward in a way that fans of Voyager are going to find really satisfying.' The show's lead, Holly Hunter, will play a Starfleet captain serving as the Academy's chancellor, and she shares a special connection with one of the new cadets, played by Sandro Rosta. As for Giamatti, we've known for a while that he was cast as the show's villain, but EW's reveal offers the first real details about his character, and this role may just fulfill Giamatti's dream of playing a Klingon. According to the report, a 'major alien presence' in Starfleet Academy comes from a race of Klingon hybrid species. The images show Giamatti with subtle Klingon-inspired features, less aggressive than traditional Klingons, but with unmistakable nods to both classic Trek designs and Discovery's reimagining of the species. Another cadet, played by Karim Diane, sports a more traditional Klingon look, hinting at a broader hybrid storyline. Landau and co-showrunner Alex Kurtzman reached out to Giamatti after he openly expressed his love for Star Trek and desire to play a Klingon while promoting The Holdovers . Looks like he got his wish. While specific plot details are still under wraps, Kurtzman revealed that Giamatti's character embodies the Federation's post-Burn struggle to reconnect fractured worlds—and the darker forces resisting that effort. 'He represents a tide that has swept across the [real] world in a very profound and upsetting way.' Kurtzman explained. 'I say this without taking a political stance. That is part of what it means to invite everybody into the tent. One of my favorite things about Star Trek is that it reaches across the aisle. People on all sides of the political spectrum love it for different reasons. That is something that we really wanted to hold true to here.' He continued with one of the show's core themes: 'One of the things that we see all across the world now is how much hate is relied on to sow division between things that connect us as human beings and how hate is used as a bludgeon to destroy empathy, which I think is ultimately what Star Trek is about. 'At its core, it's about: We may not look the same, but we are the same. Finding that common ground and figuring out a way to understand our differences is at the heart of what [Star Trek creator Gene] Roddenberry was talking about.' A school setting might sound lighter than past Trek adventures, but Starfleet Academy is diving headfirst into some weighty themes while giving us a mix of new blood and legendary characters. And Paul Giamatti as a Klingon hybrid villain? That's the kind of bold casting choice that could make this series a standout in the modern Trek era. What do you think of Giamatti's Klingon-inspired look? Are you ready for Starfleet Academy to warp into the 32nd century?

Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek's network of contributors It's been not quite two years since "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" Season 2 ended on a huge cliffhanger, and now we finally know when to expect new episodes. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Season 3 of "Strange New Worlds" will debut with not one, but two new episodes on Paramount+ on Thursday, July 17. Paramount Along with the news of the premiere date, Paramount+ also released a new poster for the season. You can see that below. 🚨BREAKING NEWS - SNW S3 PREMIERE DATE! The long-awaited premiere date is here!#StrangeNewWorlds Season 3 sets course for its streaming premiere on July 17 on Paramount+ with a stunning new poster!#StarTrek — Trek Central (@TheTrekCentral) May 15, 2025 Hopefully, the wait for a new season won't be quite as long next time. "Strange New Worlds" has been renewed for a fourth season ahead of the release of Season 3, and production on Season 4 is already underway. Judging by a teaser released earlier this year, episodes of Season 3 include what appears to be a holodeck episode, one episode in which the ship gets hardwired with landlines, and at least one episode in which half the lead crew are surgically altered to appear as, and act, as Vulcans. Season 2 of the sci-fi series ended with things looking particularly bad for our heroes. A chunk of the Enterprise crew had been captured by the reptilian Gorn, while the ship itself was under fire from more than a few Gorn ships. The Season 2 finale, "Hegemony", ends with Captain Pike (Anson Mount) speechless as to how to get out of his bind. With the cancellation of both "Star Trek: Discovery" and "Star Trek: Lower Decks", "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" is for now the only game in town as far as "Trek" is concerned. That is, it will be until the upcoming "Star Trek: Starfleet Academy" gets off the ground. The latter series has wrapped production but so far there's no official release window yet. Then there's the live-action "Star Trek" workplace comedy that Tawny Newsome of "Star Trek: Lower Decks" fame is developing with Justin Simen. "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" stars Anson Mount, Rebecca Romijn, Ethan Peck, Jess Bush, Christina Chong, Celia Rose Gooding, Melissa Navia, Babs Olusanmokun and Martin Quinn. Guest stars for the upcoming season include Rhys Darby, Patton Oswalt, Cillian O'Sullivan, Melanie Scrofano, Carol Kane, and Paul Wesley.
