Graeme McDowell's comment after banking €1.6 million speaks volumes about him
Graeme McDowell was all class as he shared the runner-up spot at LIV Golf Virginia. McDowell chalked up his top result of the LIV season to date – landing second on Sunday, just behind winner Joaquin Niemann who secured his fourth 2025 victory. The Portrush native, alongside Anirban Lahiri, pocketed a tidy €1.6 million for their efforts at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club. Showing true sportsmanship, 45-year-old McDowell was quick to heap praise on his fellow competitors after the triumph. The event saw some of LIV's heavyweights, like Bubba Watson, Bryson DeChambeau, Phil Mickelson and Jon Rahm, making a mark, yet McDowell edged out this illustrious group to finish near the very top. "Nice to be up there with names like that," he remarked when asked about the calibre of players. "Those are pretty good names. I think it speaks to the golf course. "I think it speaks to the fact that it was a - it required a bit of thought. It required a little bit of cunning, if you like, and I think that's why so many experienced players played well. "I think it's a wonderful track. Obviously shout-out to the maintenance crew for the work they did to get the course ready after the rain. I really enjoyed the golf course. It was a great setup and the type of venue that LIV deserves here in the US." McDowell's heartfelt mention of the tireless maintenance workers and greens staff upon his latest performance speaks volumes about his character. Even though he didn't scoop the top €3.6m prize at the Virginia event, his stout finish and sizeable seven-figure earnings are just as sweet for the golfer who has often been missing from the winner's circle. Assessing his achievement on the leaderboard, prior to this high-pressure weekend in Virginia, McDowell was sharing 12th place as his pinnacle for 2025, measured during a tournament in Hong Kong. Sunday saw him notch his most impressive result within the LIV Golf circuit yet, nabbing second place just shy of victory, building on three top-10 placements accrued last year, reports Belfast Live. Nevertheless, his thoughts were immediately with those whose hard work made the event's smooth run possible – showing gratitude when most might be soaking up their own success. Meanwhile, Niemann's recent triumph in Virginia consolidates his standing as the reigning heavyweight of LIV Golf, forging ahead with a healthy lead above DeChambeau in the rankings. Next on the LIV Golf calendar is Dallas, returning as a familiar host from last year's Team Championship. McDowell currently sits in 25th place, just outside the 'Lock Zone'. The top 24 players in any LIV Golf campaign are guaranteed a spot in the following year's competition, though exceptions can be made for certain players. This was the case for McDowell after he finished both the 2023 and 2024 seasons in the 'Open Zone'. However, it seems he's well respected on the tour as Smash GC captain Brooks Koepka chose to keep him on board regardless.

LIV Golf star Phil Mickelson nails incredible shot during tournament
Phil Mickelson showed the golf world he still has it during a LIV Golf tournament on Sunday. Mickelson was on the 17th hole at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Virginia on Sunday when he was attempting a shot from the rough. He stood in the bunker and swung his club, trying to hit it over himself to get onto the green – at the very least. The ball traveled onto the green and kept rolling until it dropped into the cup. "That is unbelievable," the broadcaster said as Mickelson raised his arms in delight. It was one of the best shots of the 2025 season in LIV Golf. Mickelson was 12-under par and in seventh when he nailed the shot. He finished 13-under for the tournament and tied for fourth place with Thomas Pieters, Bryson DeChambeau and Bubba Watson. HyFlyers GC, the team Mickelson is the captain of, finished in eighth place as Andy Ogletree, Brendan Steele and Cameron Tringale finished well below Mickelson. Joaquin Niemann won the tournament, finishing 15-under par. Graeme McDowell and Anirban Lahiri were tied for second, shooting 14-under. Niemann has four wins on the season and left Virginia with a firm lead for the championship. DeChambeau is right behind him. Jon Rahm, Sergio Garcia and Lucas Herbert round out the top five. Mickelson is in 11th in the standings even as he missed the first tournament of the season. He finished third at Hong Kong and sixth in Miami to go along with his finish in Virginia. 'Still something left in the tank'
Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell says contending for his first LIV Golf title reminded him that he still has "something left in the tank". The 2010 US Open champion led during the final round in Virginia on Sunday before being edged out by Chile's Joaquin Niemann, who shot an eight-under 63 to clinch his fourth win of the season. McDowell, whose last win came at the Saudi International in February 2020, made just two bogeys across the three rounds to finish one stroke behind Niemann. "I'm very proud of what I'm doing out here and the way I've committed myself to continuing to work, continuing to grind, and sometimes you need a little something back just to remind you that you've still got something left in the tank," said the former world number four. McDowell carded five birdies in a bogey-free 66 on Sunday, but his momentum was stalled by two weather delays as heavy rain hit Robert Trent Jones Golf Club. After a birdie on the 17th, the 45-year-old gave himself the chance to match Niemann's 15-under mark on the final green, but missed his putt on the left."I'm happy with the fight. It was tough to keep the momentum going with the breaks. I just asked Joaco [Niemann]'s caddie what they did in the second break because whatever they did was good," added the four-time Ryder Cup player. "It's hard to play loose when you need it, when you kind of haven't been there for a while. "But I was really happy the way I composed myself generally today. Drove the ball great. I felt pretty comfortable out there."Hopefully a big summer ahead, and like I said in the presser, [I've] been so disappointed with my general performance on LIV this to point, this is what I expect of myself still. Really nice to get the juices flowing a little bit. I'm super excited about the week." McDowell focused on Portrush return Having failed to qualify for the US Open last week, McDowell is targeting a return to major competition on home soil at the Open Championship at Royal Portrush next finished tied for 57th when the Open returned to Portrush in 2019. He will play in the next LIV event in Dallas on 29 June before attempting to qualify for the Open in the final qualifying event at Royal Cinque Ports in Kent. "I'm going to use this as momentum to take forward to Dallas and then on to the British Open qualifier," said McDowell, who has not played in a major since the 2020 US Open. "Setting my sights on those two weeks. Dallas is a course that I've looked at and I like it."

Phil Mickelson didn't win LIV Golf Virginia, but he stole the show
Phil Mickelson remains a magician with a golf club in his hands. The six-time major championship winner, who will turn 55 next week, treated a disbelieving gallery to perhaps the most improbable shot of his career — which is saying something for one of the most creative players in history — during Sunday's weather-delayed final round of LIV Golf Virginia at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club.
