Man Utd ratings: Bryan Mbeumo eases pressure on Bruno Fernandes but Matheus Cunha lacks sharpness vs Fiorentina

BRYAN MBEUMO showed fans what they've been missing as Manchester United beat Fiorentina 5-4 on penalties in their final pre-season friendly. United were a mixed bag in their final summer warm-up game - and the only one at Old Trafford - before the start of the new season next Sunday. 6 6 65,000 fans turned out for the friendly but the Red Devils quickly saw themselves behind from a corner inside eight minutes when Simon Salomon Junor Sohm buried it from 12 yards after being left in no man's land. Ruben Amorim's side showed the same problems with defending corners, which didn't bode well with set-piece kings Arsenal arriving in eight days' time. Casemiro celebrated like he scored but it was former Inter Milan star Robin Gosens' headed own-goal that drew the home side level inside 25 minutes. Amorim didn't make any changes until the 72nd minute as United remain undefeated in pre-season after avoiding defeat during the US tour. Legendary club keeper David de Gea was given a proper send-off from fans on his first return to Old Trafford since leaving in 2023. United unveiled their four new signings but it was Benjamin Sesko - who was announced from RB Leipzig before kick-off - that got the loudest roar from fans. And just so, as writing could be on the wall for Rasmus Hojlund after Mount started ahead of the Dane as a false No9. But the feeling around Old Trafford feels more positive as Kobbie Mainoo's penalty in the shootout won Amorim's side the Snapdragon Cup. Here's how SunSport's Manchester United Reporter Katherine Walsh rated the players... Altay Bayindir - 6 Was disastrously let down by his defence, who left Salomon Junor Sohm with ACRES of space from 12 yards for his goal. Man Utd confirm £74million Benjamin Sesko transfer as he joins Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo in new-look frontline And that doesn't send a strong message with Mikel Arteta's corner masters arriving next weekend. But his strong hand avoided defeat in the 86th minute. And fans will need more of that with Bayindir set to start the season in goal as Andre Onana nurses a hamstring injury. Harry Maguire - 5 Last season's troubles back in action as United conceded from a corner within the first eight minutes. He is supposed to be part of Amorim's six-man leadership squad, but was prone to the same mistakes of not reading the game. The England defender had the best first chance of the second half after being coaxed into shooting from distance by the crowd - echoes of the game where he turned into a winger against Athletic Club last season. Ayden Heaven - 5 Part of a horrendous mix-up for the opener, jumped up, hiding behind Maguire as the cross flew over both of their heads. Was on hand to block Junor Sohm's shot after half-time. Patrick Dorgu - 5 6 Two chances came from his side - first a cross that was headed over, then the goal from a corner he gave away. Salomon Junor Sohm had the freedom of Manchester to bury home into the right post in the eighth minute. The left-back is clearly physical but it often comes out as clumsiness as he bundles into players. His poor pass went into the path of Moise Kean in the box before full-time. Leny Yoro - 6 Yoro is already a leader among the back-line, perhaps their most vocal force and the best cleaner-upper of midfield mistakes. The teen will be a key aerial threat this season. Kept out by De Gea inside 30 minutes and twice in the second-half. Amad Diallo - 7 6 This was friendly but it showed how hard Amad will have to work as a right-wing back this season. The Ivorian international was up and down the flank and found Mbeumo at times, but the pair were getting mixed up in each other's space often. Bruno Fernandes - 6 The stadium chanted his name as the teams walked out - thankful he didn't take Saudi Arabia's 100m offer. A lot has been made about his position on the pitch next season after the arrival of the two No10s in Cunha and Mbeumo - and rightly so - but the skipper was everywhere again dishing out incredible passes. Casemiro - 5 6 Sloppy mistakes handed Fiorentina chances. Fans thought he got the opener, he did have a hand in it, but the ball came off Robin Gosens for an own-goal. Bizarrely scuffed a header in his own box to lay a chance on for Junor Sohm after half-time. What does Kobbie Mainoo have to do to start these sorts of games? Bryan Mbeumo - 8 Some really nice touches and link-up play with Amad, and is on set pieces from the right-hand side this season - not everything will fall on Fernandes. Played a short ball to Amad, who crossed the ball for Yoro's chance. Had the crowd on their feet with an incredible bit of skill down the sideline. Matheus Cunha - 7 6 United look dangerous when they play down the left, Cunha linked up brilliantly with Fernandes and Dorgu even if there's teething problems. Despite staying on longer than Mbuemo, the former Wolves man was largely outshone by the Cameroonian and wasn't as sharp as expected. Best move of the game nearly ended in a goal for Cunha as a huge block from one of two Fiorentina players threw their body in the way in the 80th minute. Mason Mount - 7 Amorim loves Mount and he worked his socks off. Clearly has the right attitude and will play anywhere. Stuffed up a cross with a wide shot. Mount will use this season to resurrect his England career under former boss Thomas Tuchel and he's showing shadows of his former self. Pressed and pressed all game. SUBS Matthijs De Ligt (Maguire 72) - 5 Kobbie Mainoo (Casemiro 72) - 6 Luke Shaw (Heaven 72) - 5

Black & Blue Business – Atalanta Transfer Pipeline To Inter Milan Detailed

Atalanta are the team that Inter Milan have spent the second most signing players from in the last decade. Today's print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews, highlight how the signing of Ademola Lookman would push La Dea up to number one on that list handily. There are some notable similarities between Inter Milan and Atalanta. Both clubs wear the iconic Nerazzurri black and blue colours. Furthermore, both play in the region of Lombardia. Therefore, when a player moves from one club to the other, there is not much of a settling-in period necessary. (Photo by) As the Corriere dello Sport note, Inter have signed three players from Atalanta in the last decade. Since the 2015-16 season, three players have made the switch to the Nerazzurri from the Gewiss Arena – Roberto Gagliardini, Alessandro Bastoni, and Robin Gosens. That trio cost €81 million in total. The only club Inter have paid more for transfers during the period is Sassuolo – €84.7 million for Matteo Politano, Stefano Sensi, and Davide Frattesi. If Inter were to complete a big money deal for Atalanta forward Ademola Lookman this summer, though, La Dea would go well clear of the Neroverdi. Meanwhile, two clubs have paid more to Atalanta for players during the last decade than Inter – Juventus and Manchester United. The Bianconeri are top of the pile, having paid €116.4 million in transfer fees to Atalanta. The Red Devils, meanwhile, have spent €99.1 million on just two Atalanta players in the form of Amad Diallo and Rasmus Hojlund.

Robin Gosens keen on Roma as an option

Robin Gosens keen on Roma as an option Robin Gosens is being linked with a move to Roma. The Giallorossi are in advanced talks to send Angelino to Al Hilal and are therefore looking to bring in a new leftback. Given Gian Piero Gasperini's recent appointment, Robin Gosens – currently at Fiorentina – has been linked as a potential replacement due to his strong bond with the former Atalanta manager. At the moment, however, there has been no contact between Roma and Gosens' entourage. Nonetheless, according to Retesport, the German international would be keen on Roma as an option for next season.

How ‘Super' Robin Gosens Almost Helped Fiorentina Beat Real Betis

More Maffia/NurPhoto via Getty Images) Trailing after the first leg, Fiorentina knew they needed a special performance to knock out Real Betis and advance to the UEFA Conference League Final. Robin Gosens gave them exactly that, but La Viola came up short against the effervescent Spanish side to lose 4-3 on aggregate. There were some notable changes for Fiorentina, boss Raffaele Palladino not only recalling Moise Kean but also bringing Dodô in at right-back. The Brazil international only had surgery to remove his appendix 13 days earlier, making a remarkable recovery and immediately getting back into action. Just as it had the previous week in Seville, the game began at breakneck pace. Both teams pushed to find an opening, David De Gea called into action to deny Pablo Fornals, Isco and Giovani Lo Celso. At the other end, Kean had a good chance, before a well-worked corner saw a header from Pietro Comuzzo cleared off the line and the rebound was blocked by Marc Bartra. Antony saw one good chance denied by former Manchester United team-mate De Gea, but got the better of the goalkeeper a few minutes later with an excellent free kick. Yet having worked so hard to extend their advantage, Betis suddenly found themselves on the back foot. Another great corner delivery from Rolando Mandragora was met by a wide open Gosens, the wing-back directing his header into the far bottom corner to mark his seventh goal of the season. Just eight minutes later, Fiorentina had another corner. This time the ball was whipped in by Yacine Adli, but it would once again be Gosens who met it, flicking a glancing header into the nearside corner to completely wrongfoot Francisco Vieites. In truth the goals were only a small part of the impact Gosens would have on the entire second leg as he constantly found himself heavily involved in the action at both ends of the field. According to statistics, the Germany international recorded 61 touches, including two progressive carries, four progressive passes made and five received. No fewer than 22 of his touches were in the attacking third, with six inside the opposition penalty area, Gosens creating one goal scoring opportunity for a team-mate. Meanwhile, he also did his part to deny Betis time and space in possession, notching four tackles, three interceptions and a block, the totality of his performance prompting one of Italy's major sports papers to dub him 'Super Gosens' on Friday's front page (shown below). However, with the tie deadlocked at 3-3, the game went into Extra Time where Betis ultimately proved to be too strong for Fiorentina. A clever pass from Aitor Ruibal sent Antony away down the right and he rolled the ball to Abde Ezzalzouli at the far post, the Morrocco international making no mistake. Just like that, Fiorentina – unlike fellow Serie A side Inter – were denied the chance to reach a third consecutive European Final as Betis will now meet Chelsea in Poland despite the best efforts of Gosens and his team-mates. After seeing him grab four goals in his last seven games, La Viola can at least be pleased that the former Atalanta man has proven to be one of the best signings of this current campaign. Having initially signed Gosens on loan from Union Berlin, German outlet Kicker believe that a clause to sign him outright has been triggered. That will reportedly see Fiorentina hand over just €7.5 million ($8.44 million) for a player who has weighed in with seven goals and nine assists in all competitions. He might not have been able to help them reach the Conference League Final, but Fiorentina will be glad to have 'Super' Robin Gosens around now and in the future.
