A Classic ‘SD Gundam' Mobile Suit Gets Its First Toy After 25 Years

The upcoming Robot Damashii Phoenix Gundam toy. With SD Gundam G Generation Eternal now out, a mainstay mobile suit from the series is finally getting its own toy after 25 years. Specifically, the Phoenix Gundam introduced in SD Gundam G Generation F on the original PlayStation in 2000 will get its own Robot Damashii toy this September. The Phoenix Gundam has had cutesy chibi model kits in the past, as well as the odd garage kit, but this marks the first time it has been given the toy treatment and in 'regular' proportions. The toy will also transform into Bird Mode (shown below) and includes the mobile suit's full array of weaponry, including the Feather Bits (those are the grey things on the back wings, in case you were wondering). The Phoenix Gundam was also recently featured in SD Gundam Battle Alliance as a free unit for the player to use. It was also a Sharpshooter mobile suit, so you could bring its sizable arsenal to bear a lot quicker, as you could bypass the slower reload setup. Priced at 14,300 yen (or around $100 at the current exchange rate), it's not overly expensive for a modern Robot Damashii release. This is most likely down to the fact that it doesn't involve die-cast, which tends to increase the price somewhat. In any case, my real hope here is that following this, we may finally get a proper toy of the Gundam Latreia, also from SD Gundam Battle Alliance. It's a wonderfully designed mobile suit and it would also be great to see it given similar physical treatment. Follow me on X, Facebook and YouTube. The ‘Gundam Figure Exhibition' In Tokyo Displays Decades Of Excellence

One of the big tentpole franchises for Bandai Spirits is definitely Gundam, and its latest exhibition at the Tamashii Nations Store in Tokyo goes all out. From the long line of Robot Damashii figures to the high-end Metal Build toys, a lot was covered. For the most part, the exhibition is about showing what Bandai Spirits has done to date with the various Gundam properties they look after, and the results are suitably comprehensive. What with GQuuuuuuX being the latest Gundam work, there were a lot of new items on show, from the various Metal Robot Damashii toys of the new Gundam designs by Ikuto Yamashita to the cutesy Figuarts Mini of the characters. Amate Yuzuriha even got her own larger-than-life statue (shown below). Amate from 'GQuuuuuuX' looking suitably upbeat. Ollie Barder What was interesting was seeing all the chogokin releases for the various life-size Gundams, from the Walking Gundam to the Freedom Gundam and Nu Gundam. Even the upcoming Osaka Expo Gundam is getting its own chogokin and Robot Damashii figures. Apart from that, the Metal Build Zeta Gundam still looks amazing, and the Metal Build God Gundam also made another appearance, although I will be covering that particular release separately. It was also nice to see the Metal Robot Damashii G-Self Perfect Pack up close. It's very faithful to the design from the anime, and while the anime itself was mostly incomprehensible it did have some very lovely designwork. With the Gundam Figure Exhibition opening today in Tokyo and closing in early September, entry is free, and there are a fair few store-exclusive items worth a look if you're in the neighborhood. In the meantime, feel free to check out the gallery below.
