10 notes on 10 Steelers from Week One of the preseason
On Saturday night, the Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Jacksonville Jaguars on the strength of their passing offense. We have gone over the game and after breaking down the obvious like the quarterbacks, we have 10 notes on 10 Steelers who stood out for us and not always for good reasons. 1 - RB Kaleb Johnson Johnson's yards before contact were negative thanks to how awful the Steelers offensive line did run blocking so we give Johnson a pass this week. 2 - WR Max Hurleman At this point, we are crunching the numbers, trying to figure out how to get Hurleman on the 53-man roster. 3 - WR Roc Taylor Like Hurleman, Roc Taylor made a strong statement on Saturday and is really going to push guys like Scotty Miller and Ben Skowronek for the last spot on the depth chart. 4 - OT Troy Fautanu The run blocking by the Steelers offensive line was down overall but that's not on Troy Fautanu. Not only did he not give up a pressure on 24 passing snaps, he was the only offensive lineman consistently doing his job on run plays. 5 - DT Yahya Black Black only played 10 snaps but it was enough for us to be convinced he needs a heavier workload next week. Black's lateral agility for a man his size is remarkable. 6 - EDGE Jack Sawyer We aren't going to overreact but this wasn't a great debut for Sawyer as a pass rusher. We are hopeful he will play with more confidence next week. 7 - EDGE DeMarvin Leal Time is running out for Leal to show he can be a 275-pound edge rusher. He was a tweener coming out of college and he's still a tweener. 8 - S Juan Thornhill Thornhill came out and decided to be the tone setter and you can see he's embraced his role as the new starting free safety. 9 - S Chuck Clark The Steelers gave Clark plenty of opportunity to make a statement on Saturday, but he's still a work in progress to get on the right page with this defense. 10 - LB Payton Wilson Wilson only played 12 snaps on Saturday but still found his way to four tackles. He's going to have a huge breakout season. This article originally appeared on Steelers Wire: 10 notes on 10 Steelers from Week One of the preseason

Steelers undrafted rookie making push for 53-man roster
The Pittsburgh Steelers made many notable additions this offseason, via free agency, trades, and the draft. Through nearly two weeks of training camp, several of those new players have popped and look like they can help Pittsburgh end its playoff win drought. Cornerback Jalen Ramsey has arguably been the best player in Latrobe this summer. DK Metcalf has also had moments where he looks like the juggernaut the Steelers need him to be at receiver. However, it's another wideout that continues to make splashes and has people talking about a potential Cinderella run to make the roster. Undrafted free agent Roc Taylor has been stacking great play after great play in a push to make the 53-man roster. He had a very good practice on Friday night, beating James Pierre down the sideline in one-on-ones for a touchdown. He's also showcased very good route-running ability, as well as the willingness to run block downfield in team drills. Each day, the Memphis product seems to make another big play to make the case that he deserves a roster spot going into Week 1. Considering the lack of proven game-changing talent at the position, it would be easy to make the case for the rookie to be given a chance. Should the Steelers not make another outside addition at receiver, he would be a good pick to be the No. 6 wideout on the depth chart. And even if they do make a trade or sign a No. 2 wideout, it would make more sense to keep Taylor over a veteran like Robert Woods. In his last two seasons at Memphis, Taylor caught 135 passes for 2,033 yards and six touchdowns. 3 sleepers we are rooting for to make the 53-man roster
The Pittsburgh Steelers are just days away from their first preseason game of the year. This will be the first opportunity the coaches will get to see many of these young players in live action as they fight for their spots on the roster. The Steelers are taking on the Jacksonville Jaguars and here are the three guys we will be rooting for to play well and secure their spot on the 53-man roster. WR Roc Taylor Taylor is a guy who should have been drafted and was a big UDFA addition. His game and measurables are NFL caliber and he's making plays every day in training camp practice. There has been a lot of hype and hope surrounding Roman Wilson but Taylor has been the better receiver so far. G Max Scharping No player has taken better advantage of their opportunities than Scharping. He's shown he can play four spots on the offensive line and has proven himself to be incredibly valuable for an offensive line with lots of questions. CB Beanie Bishop It's crazy to think that the starting nickel cornerback from last season might not make the team but Pittsburgh has loaded up at cornerbacks and Bishop might end up the odd man out. We like Bishop's demeanor and style of play and hope he can win a place on the 53-man roster. Seahawks legend Shaun Alexander wakes up with 'GMFB'
How Will DK Metcalf Handle Being Lone Wolf? | Steelers Morning Rush Welcome to Steelers Morning Rush, our new daily short-form podcast with Alan Saunders, giving a longer perspective on a single news topic surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers or the National Football League. Today, it's how new wide receiver DK Metcalf will handle being the top dog -- and maybe the only real threat at outside receiver. Metcalf has always been part of a deep group of wide receivers with the Seattle Seahawks, splitting targets with Tyler Lockett and Jaxon Smith-Njigba the last two seasons. With Pittsburgh right now, he looks like he's the whole show, as the Steelers appear to once again be set to enter the season with just one solid option at outside receiver. Veteran Robert Woods, special teamer Ben Skowronek and undrafted rookie Roc Taylor appear to be the best options to help ease the pressure on Metcalf at this point -- not exactly a threatening list. So how will Metcalf handle the pressure? Alan breaks it down. #steelers #herewego #nfl CONNECT WITH STEELERS NOW: Steelers Now: SN on Twitter: SN on FB: SN on Insta: 7:49 Now Playing Paused Ad Playing
